visionaaronMadonna Make Up for Rebel Heart Tour by Aaron Henrikson ⤠⤠M wanted a fierce warrior look to open the show. I love how it flows from the decadent glamour and violence of the opening Iconic video we shot with@stevenkleinstudio  I felt that bringing back a strong, defined brow would give her the impact she was looking for. It also worked perfectly with the dark roots and center-parted textured waves by the amazing @andylecompte We wanted to make sure to maintain some intensity in the eyes, but with more natural lashes than M has used in the past. Sculpted cheekbones with a wine-tone stained lip really complete the look! Here's a interesting technical article that includes a lot of info about M, what she wants & how they play the music live. It contains lots of little M tidbits like how they completely changed the look of the instruments just so it looks good for Madonna on stage. and how every set needs to be clean just like on the first day

Exclusive Video: Synth Secrets of Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour

Behind the big production and choreography of Madonna’s 2015-16 Rebel Heart tour are some state-of-the-art synth rigs. Musical director Kevin Antunes, whom we’ve also talked to about his work with Justin Timberlake and on Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson: One tribute, invited us onstage for a rare look at the hardware-meets-software stage rigs assembled for himself and co-keyboardist Ric’key Pageot.

On Antunes’ stage riser, a huge amount of the sounds come from a mirrored dual-laptop Native Instruments Komplete setup that includes Maschine pad controllers and Komplete Kontrol MIDI keyboards. The MacBook Pros also run MOTU Digital Performer. His audio interface of choice is the RME MADIface XTbecause he needs to send lots of channels to and from both the front-of-house and monitor mixers. A venerable Mackie Big Knob serves as Antunes’ personal monitor controller, along with customized Master & Dynamic headphones. To his right, a Roland Fantom-G workstation and V-Synth GT comprise the hardware synth portion. A custom-made rack of Gibraltar components utilizes a convex, ribcage-like shape to allow freedom of movement and easy access to foot pedals--and also looks so stealthy that from the audience perspective, it’s as though the keyboards and synths are floating in mid-air.

Ric’key Pageot’s main axes are an Access Virus TI 2 above a Nord Stage 2. For loops and samples, he runs Ableton Live and a Push controller on a MacBook Pro, via an Apogee Ensemble interface, connected via Thunderbolt. (Read about the latest features in Ableton Live 9.5 here.) Like Kevin, he also has the Roland Fantom-G and V-Synth GT.

Kevin, Ric’key, and keyboard techs Joe Wolfe and “Bongo†Longo explain all this and more in this trio of exclusive videos, shot just before sound check at Madonna’s October 2015 performance in San Jose, California.

Monitoring Madonna

3/03/2016

http://www.mixonline.com/news/tours/monitoring-madonna/426891

Madonna began the third leg of her highly successful globetrotting Rebel Heart Tour in Mexico City on January 6 with a scheduled conclusion on March 20 in Sydney, Australia. Alongside Madonna, stage personnel comprise four musicians, two backing vocalists and 20 dancers. The Rebel Heart Tour has been traveling with a pair of DiGiCo SD7 consoles operated by front-of-house engineer Andy Meyer and monitor engineers Matt Napier and Sean Spuehler. Meyer and Napier are both using SD7s with Napier’s console featuring an EX007 fader expansion.

“Madonna likes her live sound to be as close as possible to the album,†says Napier. â€œTo accomplish this, Sean focuses on mixing her vocal effects and delays, which are then bused to the FOH console so—in theory, at least—the audience hears exactly the same vocal sound that she does. She spends a large proportion of the show 110 feet in front of the P.A. As she gets further into the P.A., the sound of the spill through her vocal mic means what she needs to hear in terms of pitch and timing constantly changes. It’s the first time I’ve run a show using timecode, which I’ve done partly to mitigate this. Having multiple snapshots per song, all fired automatically via timecode, has freed me to concentrate on the aspects of the mix that I need to adjust in compensating for the effect of her moving along the catwalk. The timecode has also been really useful when we have the occasional—inevitable—problem, because it allows me to focus on that and not worry so much about missing a cue.â€

All of the musicians are on in-ear monitors, with additional monitoring for musical director/keyboardist Kevin Antunes, a thumper for drummer Brian Frasier-Moore and sidefills for the dancers. Spuehler’s vocal group is bused into Napier’s side of the SD7, where he adds it to the music mix in her monitors, as well as looking after the other musicians. In all, the SD7 monitor console is set up with 118 input channels, 19 mono auxiliaries, 22 stereo auxiliaries, six stereo groups, four mono groups, 10 matrix outputs and 12 control groups.

“We have kept the console running at 48 kHz, mainly because we interface via MADI with the playback computers and all the show sessions are at that sample rate,†says Antunes. “In addition to the playback, we also send record lines back to playback world. This means that in rehearsals the musicians can add any overdubs, or additional parts, quickly and easily. A second MADI interface system connects via RME MADI Bridges to two Mac Pros running Apple Logic. This allows us to interface third-party plug-ins directly with the console.â€

Even though Madonna may be having trouble with her personal life, her Rebel Heart Tour has become a huge commercial and critical success. On Thursday, Billboard reported on the tour’s latest feat.

“Madonna takes the No. 2 slot on the latest Hot Tours roundup, based on January ticket sales reported from her ongoing Rebel Heart Tour that covered North American and European markets during a 15-week span in the fall. The trek resumed on Jan. 6 following a two-and-a-half week break at the end of the year, opening with a two-show engagement at Mexico City’s Sports Palace arena.â€

Madonna has played to full houses everywhere she has performed.

Billboard notes that sold-out shows in seven U.S. cities followed in January along with a two-night stint in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the end of the month. Then, they added more reasons why Madonna is still the Queen of Pop.

“Altogether during the first month of the year, the pop diva performed for just over 150,000 fans at 12 concerts, adding $19.3 million to her tour’s overall gross that has now topped the $100 million mark. Since the Sept. 9 opening performance in Montreal, the Rebel Heart tour has reached $107.3 million in ticket sales at 61 concerts.â€

The tour is expected to make over $160 million by its end in Australia later this month. She may not make as much money as her previous tours, which were played at a time when the dollar conversion was much higher and most of the dates were played in stadiums. Madonna kept costs down by playing mostly in arenas this time around.

Still, Madonna looks set to make more money than U2 did this past year with their Innocence + Experience Tour, which made just over $150 million. She will also easily outdo the total gross from Lady Gaga’s 2014 Artrave Tour, which grossed about $83 million. However, Madonna will fall far behind Taylor Swift, who grossed over $250 million with her 1989 World Tour.

Taylor Swift has made more money than Madonna this time around.

Still, as Billboard notes, Madonna’s latest world tour puts her over the $1 billion mark in tour revenue, most of which Madonna earned past the age of 50, when a pop star is supposed to fade. Once again, Madonna has broken the rules. She has also received exceptionally good reviews for her shows. Paula Yeoman from NewzHub NZ said the wait for Madonna was worth it.

“It was all that I expected, and wanted, from a queen who has reigned across four decades. It was huge and it was fun. The dancers were simply amazing. Would I have preferred to have seen her in the 80s, 90s or early 2000s? Yes, I would have. But was it still worth the wait? Absolutely!†Yeoman claimed.

When Madonna performed in the U.K., the Guardian gave it a five-star review.

“Marking World Aids Day provides the chance for the star to remember those who have died – including ‘the entire family of my adopted son’ – and for the most charismatic song of the night. Like a Prayer finds Madonna accompanied by Spanish guitar. The entire room is in the palm of her hand, like a string of rosary beads, 20,000 long,†claimed reviewer Kitty Empire.

It was thought that because the Rebel Heart Tour has been so successful, Madonna would extend it into the summer. The Times of Israel claimed Madonna was heavily rumored to play Israel this summer as one of the extended tour dates. However, with all of Madonna’s custody problems, she may need a break. The Rebel Heart Tour will always go down as one of fans’ favorite projects in Madonna’s entire career.

Why they don't release the backdrops as promotional singles is beyond every human mind  :cryin:

Still hoping for a miracle. I understand her not releasing backdrops as music videos while the tour is going on, but i hope Iconic gets released on Youtube and Apple after the tour is over.  :suffer: of course it needs to be re-edited a bit to match the different format, but come on M!!!!
