I appreciate this thread and post so much @RUADJAI

Yes being a Madonna fan, you kind of become an audiophile too and it's true that beginning with MDNA (carrying over to RH) the mixing was simply quite subpar. No -- way below the usual quality superior Madonna mixing and equalizing we were used to pre-2012 Madonna. I will put the blame on the many "producers" of these two albums especially on RH.

No worries though, I believe M14 will see a return to supreme quality MADONNA sound we all know and love.

At least the sung s's dont hurt like shit anymore, since MDNA

What do you guys think? Do you guys even notice these things? I produce music as a hobby so maybe I'm a little too analytical sometimes with it, but when an album is done right its a magical experience, but unfortunately Rebel Heart will never be that for me. I love it for what it is, I love the songs, it just can't be classified as a sonic masterpiece in my world.

I'm not even gonna read most of what you wrote, because I'm afraid I won't be able to unhear it and it will always bug me.

Ageism is a big problem in society today, but there are some biological truths we cannot escape. The fact that hearing decreases with age and with wear (aka exposure to loud noises) might amount for a lot of things that might be heard by some as faults in the music of aging artists. On one hand, the music industry standards are going louder and louder, on the other our favorite artists are getting older, maybe mellower, and they might not hear these details anymore. Or they do and they accept them because they find them quaint or something different from what they did before. Whatever the reasons, as I'm aging myself, I find it easier to just not focus on this stuff. If the mastering or mixing is poor on a song by an artist I love, I just listen to that song less.

TLDR: Expect sonic masterpieces from young artists who want to prove themselves. Accept older artists for what they are, either slightly hard of hearing or just more relaxed about sonic quality.

I think a bit part of it is also the digital technology. Someone said once in relation to photography that with analog we accept the flaws while with digital we seek them out. I think that's true in music as well. I'm not saying that Rebel Heart was a flawless album done with attention to detail but mistakes and flaws have always happened, we just tend to scrutinise and question these things more nowadays.

The whole rebel heart album leaves a bad taste in my mouth - i dont even listen to it now - i actually prefer the MDNA album - i feel very bad for M though as its a shame because of the leaks she had to rush the release of it and i think producers she brought in (Diplo and especially Kanye west) just made it worse - she didnt even bother to fill the special edition cd with those great tracks Queen, God Is Love, Tragic Girl & Freedom(I'm really surprised this didnt make the album especially as she kept banging on about revolution etc) & Never Let You Go - instead we got remixes of LFL ? what a waste of a cd ?? im just hoping she finishes the new one and its given a proper mastering - its not like she cant afford it - or maybe record companies just cant be bothered now as its all about shitty itunes and streaming

Also, I still think that this should've been the released version of LFL. Yeah yeah Keszia, Gorgon City sounds from 2014, but come on it had more of MNEK's vocals... and sounded less "rushed" and "forced"

AND MNEK should've been more featured on RH, like more of his vocals and music styles! Would've put more of a cohesion so to speak. Meh, oh well

Yeah, don't even get me started on the tired beat of the album version of Living for Love. :Madonna002: This is the version I prefer as well.

Im pretty sure another part of this whole equation was Madonna trusting certain producers to give her the goods, and they didn't really give two shits. At least Pharrell, Justin, and Timberland, I Believe, wanted to do their best for her.

Ultimately the leaking hurt the album in many aspects. Madonna had been teasing the album for almost a year at that point. We already had WAOM and RB itself; a big chunk of the album was circulating around for months . It was only a matter of time that the whole thing would leak altogether. I think they were not prepared for it and of course they panicked and released the supposedly finished tracks. It was a big mess but i m sure everybody learned from it and this time around M14 is on the course to be the first album in decades not to suffer of any leakage.

Great topic. I agree with everything. I haven't listened to it since it came out. I just can't bring myself to try. It sounds all wrong. Like a cake still in the oven, it ain't ready yet.

Also, what really drives me nuts is I am pretty sure someone was taking the piss in Iconic with "Say I have to fart and I can't wait." It absolutely does not sound like "fight". Surely I am not the only one that thinks this, right?

I think the young producers on that record were taking the piss, namely Diplo. He did badger her to do a Major Lazer thing to La Isla Bonita.

Isn't it all Demo Castellion's fault?  That's who usually gets the blame

Yes. Actually, I don't think he gets as much blame for it as he should, tbh. His mixing is shoddy and his fingerprints are all over the place on her last three albums. It's easy to hear his distinct influence on Hard Candy as he mixed the Timbaland tracks while Mark Spike Stent (one of the most sought-after mixing engineers in the business for good reason) mixed the Pharrell tracks. Even though his work on HC is possibly the least objectionable, it still pales in comparison to Stent's.

I think ya'll have too much time on your hands! Mastering/Mixing ain't gonna fix sloppy production period.

Take this extract from Mirwais on Hollywood (which also confirms that it was probably created in the early 90's as rumoured) - 'The mix of this one was very hard....'

“‘Hollywood’ was a very old song,” Mirwais says. “We weren't satisfied with the original version, so Madonna found an alternative melody. I used a very minimalist drum kit with old percussion I found in an E-mu sampler bank. I used an old drum loop in addition to the basic programming for the disco feel of it. I needed to use a smaller-sounding kick because I wanted to have the bass synth sound very big. The bass is the Nord Lead Rack 2 with a lot of filtering manipulations. I had many problems with that. When I started to use the filter on the Nord Lead, I had to change the bottom; it lacked weight. I had to find exactly the right frequency on the Yamaha O2R mixer. It was very hard to find the right kick, too, because if I chose something bigger, the track would have sounded like an average club track. The vocals were recorded with heavy compression in her headphones to help her to get the feeling of the performance. We experiment a lot with vocal sounds. For example, the pitch-down vocal at the end was initially much longer. The mix of this one was very hard — like almost all tracks — because there was so much stuff going on. This is why maybe the final version is so simple.”

Sorry I don't know who else he's worked with. I'm a Madonna fan, not a Mark Stent fan.

This is a loaded question. I don't think I could go through the whole album, It would probably take me all day.  I really love the Erotica vocals on Inside Out, and Veni Vedi Vici.

Vocals i don't like...    Iconic!  The verses sound like weird nursery rhymes for kids when the words are supposed to be inspiring. The song also reminds me of The Wizard of OZ. "Born the be a superstar" gives me The wicked witch flying monkeys realness.

Pertaining to Living for Love

I despise that high pitched doubled vocal on the first verse of Living for Love. What the hell was THAT? The raw vocal is nice tho heard in other versions.

A vocal part I do really like is the "took me to heaven, let me fall down". The magic of the song starts there.

Now a days mixing is part of producing and usually happens in tandem.

THIS.

Also why I love tour versions of songs as she gives the song more room to breathe and be it's own thing. Feels like she rushes her albums to get out on time, but with the tour she has lots of time to experiement and let the song find its fullest expression.

I love reading about the technical stuff like this. All very interesting food for thought when listening!

What mix is considered Diplo’s final say on BIM? I have some remix of his of it I think that was in a set of his, but it has this annoying filter that makes the whole song sound Iike it’s playing in a bathroom. That can’t be it, can it?
