Guest
Adding: BTW, I was shocked to see MDNA so low. People don't know what they are missing. And that goes for Hard Candy and American Life too. You'll have to keep in mind that album sales these days aren't what they used to be, so while her sales were quiite low, there were just a handful of artists that sold more than her in 2012. They didn't sell much more than her either. The only want that sold way much more than anyone was Adele. She sold like over 7 million while Taylor Swift, One Direction and few others only sold roughly over 2 million. The latter two were far more commercial and accessible to the public/mainstream. Madonna got no airplay while Taylor Swift and One Direction were all over the place... in films, commercials and on the radio.
Guest
By the way, I am actually surprised that Like A Prayer didn't sell more albums. I always felt at the time that period she was reaching the peak of her success. The title song was massive and with the Pepsi/Video controversy, it only helped that song alone get more exposure. Voguerista 11,737
Thanks for the info!!! I didn't realize sales were lower for everyone. It sounds much like TV ratings these days. Some shows are lower in viewing numbers than they use to be....and yet, they all are.

According to wiki the artists you mentioned sold way more than 2 million but I'm not sure if those are shipments or actual sales, because wiki has higher figures for the Madonna albums listed here. IDK You're right. The two did sell more than 2 million. I guess I was thinking specifically for the end of the year sales for 2012, and it seemed at the time Madonna sold just as many as them if not just a little less. Unfortunately, she didn't sell much more after that year, while the other two artists kept selling. But still with both those artists, especially Taylor Swift, their last albums didn't do as well as previous albums. I guess my point is that album sales have been drastically declining. Music hasn't been so good in the past year. I like Katy and I loved Teenage Dream but I don't really like Prism a lot. It's just blah. One Direction sold around 4 million in 2012, all their albums have sold around 5 million, but not sure if that includes shipments. MDNA sold relatively well for a non-promoted album, and let's face it the singles weren't very strong for Madonna standards so it did ok. Hopefully her sales won't dicrease with the next album, it would be a shame if she promotes it like apparently she's going to, and it ends up selling the same as MDNA

unapologeticheart 872
Based on these numbers I found the total is 304M albums+singles, but what about this? more reasonable imo, because many of her old albums continue to sell over time (especially, the Immaculate collection, ray of light, confessions and celebration)

Guest
Couple things that I find interesting... Immaculate Collection hasn't faired well in the digital age. Truth Or Dare being a huge documentary on her BAT, really didn't sell well did it? Though, we have "I'm Going To Tell You A Secret" which did sell a million copies. Thanks for all the info.
