Madonna's "Like a Virgin" returns to the #Billboard200 chart after 28 years

MadonnaLike a Virgin - No. 124 — Madonna’s classic album, Like a Virgin, returns to the chart “for the very first time†since 1987. Like Panic! at the Disco’s Death of a BachelorLike a Virgin was also sale priced for just 99 cents during the tracking week in the Google Play store. Consumers snapped up the set, yielding 5,000 in digital sales (up 1,028 percent – a gain from less than 1,000 sold the previous week) of its total 6,000 sales for the week (up 888 percent). Its 6,000 units total (nearly all from pure album sales) were up 835 percent. Thanks to Google,  scores its best sales week since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991, and its first week on the Billboard 200 chart since Sept. 19, 1987. The effort was Madonna’s second studio album, and first No. 1, spending three weeks atop the chart in 1985.[/color]

BILLBOARD 200 (September 10, 2016);
174 (Re) - Madonna - "The Immaculate Collection" [148 wks]

Catalogue Album Charts

18 (RE) 289 The Immaculate Collection

With the initial 141 weeks TIC spent on the top 200, combined with its 289 weeks inside the catalog top 50, that makes a whopping 430 charted weeks, Only Carole King's Tapestry (which had 302 weeks in the top 200 prior to the start of the catalog chart) has more cumulative weeks.

With 290 weeks on, TIC ties Patsy Cline's Greatest Hits for third place among female albums(Enya's Watermark has 305 weeks and Janis Joplin's Greatest Hits has 293- I had thought Cline's album had the most weeks since the chart's 1991 inception). ~ pulsemusic.proboards

All 88 Diamond-Certified Albums Ranked From Worst to Best: Critic's Take
9/29/2016 by Andrew Unterberger

It's worth celebrating whenever we get a brand new, RIAA-certified diamond-selling album -- indicating sales (and streaming equivalent sales) of ten million units -- because for a while, it looked like we might never get another one again. For a half-decade after Usher's Confessions was released in 2004, no album of new material was released that even got particularly close to diamond status, largely the result of a download-reeling music industry adjusting slowly to the decline of physical media.

Then, Adele. In 2011, the singer/songwriter's four-quadrant-appealing 21 was released, sparking sales unseen since the beginning of the millennium. The album stayed on top the Billboard 200 for 24 weeks, and was given the Diamond certification in November of 2012, eventually going 14x platinum. For her next act, Ms. Adkins demolished *NSYNC's record for first-week sales with her follow-up effort, 25, moving an incomprehensible 3.38 million in its debut frame, according to Nielsen SoundScan. And last week (Sept. 22), Adele was awarded her second consecutive diamond plaque, for 25 -- less than a year after the album's release.

To honor the exclusive club that Adele joins with her latest sales achievement, we've ranked every one of the RIAA-certified diamond albums. That's not counting compilations -- including greatest-hits collections, live albums, and certain soundtracks -- unless the set is comprised mainly of contemporary material. (The Dirty Dancing soundtrack, for instance, includes seven contemporary songs and five old ones, so it's in, but Garth Brooks' The Ultimate Hits -- itself certified diamond earlier this week -- has only four new songs in 34 tracks, so it's out.) It's still a whopping 88 albums, though, ranging nearly 60 years back to Elvis Presley's Elvis' Christmas Album.

Read our list here, and let's hope we don't have to wait for another Adele album -- whenever that comes -- to welcome our next newcomer to these ranks. (Each album's year of release and most-recent platinum certification as of Sept. 2016 is included.)

9. Madonna, Like a Virgin (1984, 10x Platinum)

Madonna’s musical and conceptual ambitions would grow from here, but the pure thrills of Like a Virgin are not to be overshadowed: “Angel†and “Dress You Up†are perfectly synth-popped chewing gum, “Material Girl†does Marilyn and Motown proud, and the title track is rivaled only by “Billie Jean†as the defining jam of MTV’s formative years. A year later she’d give away a couple brilliant singles away to soundtracks, seemingly just because she could.

As for Madonna's career U.S. album sales since Nielsen Music began tracking retail in 1991 (through the week ending Dec. 8, 2016), here are her 10 best sellers:
5,992,000, The Immaculate Collection (1990)
3,891,000, Ray of Light (1998)
2,934,000, Music (2000)
2,336,000, Bedtime Stories (1994)
2,102,000, Something to Remember (1995)
2,025,000, Evita (soundtrack) (1996)
1,905,000, Erotica (1992)
1,734,000, Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005)
1,397,000, GHV2: Greatest Hits Volume 2 (2001)
751,000, Hard Candy (2008)

Meanwhile, Madonna's most recent LP, 2015's Rebel Heart, has sold 238,000. Her career album sales in the Nielsen era stand at 28.5 million, making her the 34th-best-selling album artist in that 25-year-plus span. She ranks at No. 7 among women in the stretch.

But Immaculate is Diamond for 10 million copies in USA? Why only reports 5.9???

These are SoundScan numbers. The album was released in 1990 and Nielsen SoundScan began monitoring album sales in March '91. These numbers are what Nielsen recorded. Before that, shipments were what they went by for album sales. Sucks we'll never really know the true sales numbers for M's pre-SoundScan albums.

"Ray of Light would hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200, moving 371,000 copies in its first week; it earned her four Grammys and went on to sell 3.89 million copies in the U.S. (through Feb. 15, 2018) according to Nielsen Music"

So...3.890.000 copies + 459.000 (BMG club sales) = 4.3 million :08:

hmm with music club sales included it must be much more

ROL sold about 460k on BMG only, Columbia might have sold a lot more too, same for Music which sold around 100k on BMG, there were other record clubs too not just these 2

I wouldn't be surprised if ROL is up for 6xP and Music for 4xP
