No, many people are not in bed on a saturday night but i doubt those people are waiting standing still outside in the cold for 3 hours when they have already queued for a long time before the supposed doors opening time ? Also you say "She did a full show" as if it's something extraordinary and that people should forgive her everything because she does the show people have paid her for.11 points

I’m not sure what longeve means? Do you mean an artist with longevity? I don’t doubt she’s been a great artist. She’s already proven that, but her ability to continue being great is seriously in question, because her audience is dwindling. Her albums don’t sell well beyond week 1. She struggles to get her music played on the radio and her concert attendance figures over the last decade have declined. There are many reasons why that might be and so much of it is out her control. I appreciate her decline in popularity is not necessarily tied to the quality of her art. I also realize it was never her attention for this tour to outgrows Sticky & Sweet. By design it was always going to be smaller, be seen by fewer people, and make less money, but that does negate the anger, frustration and disappointment many fans have felt during this era, and these are her most ardent supporters, people willing to pay hundreds, in some cases thousands of dollars/pounds/euros to see a show that is quite literally putting people to sleep. Perhaps she doesn’t care. Perhaps some fans don’t care either. They’ll forgive and applaud her no matter what she does, but tolerating this behaviour only encourage it, and she needs to understand how damaging it is in order to change it. Otherwise she’ll be performing her ‘great’ art to an ever shrinking audience. Any aspirations to ‘disturb the peace’ will have long since past, because the rest of the world will have moved on, won’t know about it and won’t care. Simply put, she can’t continue being a great artist without people acknowledging the greatness of her art. I love her but in her own words, she needs to ‘wake up’.6 points -

Wait... people still defend stuff like this in here? The show ended at 2am guys. A show scheduled to start at 21:30 /9:30 ended at 2:15 and people still go "wat? People go to bed early in France?" This is hugely disrespectful. What's next? 3am to end the show? Getting home at 4am? Seriously... I can only imagine people that needed transportation to get home. She deserves the bad publicity.5 points -

This sounds awful, and if it were a one off it might be excusable, but how are these crazy late start times still a thing, especially after starting 12 shows on time in London? What possible excuse is there now? It’s so unprofessional. She’s becoming increasingly hard to love these days. Sometimes you need to lose everything before you appreciate what you had, so I hope the French press rip her to shreds. I’m glad she’s losing money from this tour. I encourage fans not to waste money on these ridiculously expensive tickets, and maybe then, and only then, will she finally realise the value of her fans and work harder to maintain their commitment. Aye-aye-aye...5 points -

Yup, I hope so, I really do. I can accept this journey is nearer the end than the beginning, and it’s been incredible. It truly has. When it finally ends, I hope it’s on a genuine high. As difficult as this tour has been for us, it can’t feel great for her to see audience members asleep, claiming refunds, writing negative things on her instagram... I doubt she reads even half of it, but she must know it’s going on. Then there’s the injuries, the literal physical pain she’s putting herself through every night to get through this tour. She acts like she doesn’t care, but why go through all of this this unless she’s seeking approval on some level? I believe she needs our validation, even if she pretends not to. Gosh, I remember after the Confessions tour thinking, ‘it just doesn’t get any better than this’ - Hung Up had become her most successful single to date. The album was a huge success and the Confessions show was the highest grossing tour by a female artist. Great! I genuinely felt at 48 that was the pinnacle of her career and anything else would just be the cherry on top. But she really did go on to exceed my expectations, and the last 14 years have been brilliant. It would be amazing if she had another number 1 single, but I can accept she probably won’t. Madame X is a decent record, and this show is still enjoyable even if it’s not my favourite. But I feel sad to think our expectations have lowered so much, that we’re just grateful for her turning up, even if it is 3 hours late. How did we get here? I want to grab her by the shoulders, sit her down, stare her right in the eyes and say: ‘look, if you’re going to do this, do it properly or not at all. Stop taking the piss, pretending you’re better than all of us and acting like you don’t give a shit. You’re ruining everything you’ve worked so hard for, through your own conceited, selfish arrogance. Learn some humility. Show some respect. Be grateful for your success and never forget we are the ones who put you where you are.’ I’m not sure if our unfaltering loyalty is admirable or just foolish at this point, but things have got to change.4 points -

From MUnderground: Madame X started her French ‘leg’ of the tour today at Le Grand Rex and unfortunately didn’t all go to plan. Fans waiting outside were being told by Le Grand Rex that doors would not open until 9pm and she wouldn’t be on until 10pm, unfortunately even that was positive thinking but not quite the reality. The fact was that Madonna arrived at the theatre very late and still needed to rehearse. Once people were let in word got around that she wouldn’t be taking the stage until midnight. That was in fact the case. Madame X did not perform her show until a little before midnight and delivered the full show. The audience was quite tired from the hours of waiting so it took a while for M to get the crowd going. There was even a ‘BORING!!’ from the crowd during the opening intro. People in various seats were sleeping. The audience didn’t quite ‘get’ M’s jokes and it wasn’t until ‘American Life’ that they started to forget how tired they were and were groovin’ along to the beats. ‘Frozen’ got the best reception of the crowd of the night and Jean Paul Gaultier was the undisputed beer bitch. During the fado section M commented on the disco underneath the theatre as we kept hearing the music played there throughout Madonna’s show. She was also again very annoyed by people going in and out of the theatre, also complaining about the supposed curfew (that wasn’t there). The polaroid took quite a while before it finally sold for 2000EUR to a girl from Germany, according to Madonna Germany was quite ‘tricky’. Security was non-existant and people kept on walking through the isles to the front, people all around us with phones. Le Grand Rex please sort this out, it’s a mess!4 points -

If she truly discarded him for petty reasons then too bad honestly. Had she worked on another dance oriented album with him, she would've continued to stay ahead of the curve and would've been musically relevant with the arrival of the new generation of pop stars. I know we've reassessed the HC album in recent years but it is true that that sound was tired when the album came out. MDNA was the Walmart version of COADF lol. Stuart's musicianship was amazing.4 points -

Understood! I can't pretend to know what makes one person see improvement where another sees otherwise; there's personal taste at the forefront of the debate, and that being totally subjective makes for a weak argument, and so I won't try to elaborate, but I appreciate your point of view. What I can say is that I have struggled with my own perception of Madonna and my admiration for her over the past decade, and so I know how to contextualize the perception of diminishing returns. I have spent many hours in potential disillusionment upon experiencing various new Madonna projects. That said, I grew up very aware that everything Madonna did was reviled or dismissed by at least some faction of society, and I learned to become one of her fiercest advocates in my youth. Eventually, at around the time of the emergence of Kabbalah in Madonna's creative vernacular I became more questioning and cynical myself. I became more private in my experience of Madonna. I wasn't the targeted demographic of the children's books, and I didn't enjoy her GAP jeans ITG, or her discomfort with the worth of her own music at times...Fortunately, there was always something much meatier and more intense and dense to keep me interested; American Life was the first time that I saw Madonna universally dismissed for something that I found profoundly futuristic and thoroughly enthralling; a subtler monument to her power, but one that matched her evolving maturity. I stuck to that narrative throughout the subsequent years of resurgence and renaissance via COADF and grew to love that version of Madonna; the spiritually political mother and wife. When she then reemerged with Hard Candy I had to readapt again, but this time I was excited to see Madonna's defiance regarding her age. She was so physically powerful...It didn't matter that my private conversations with fellow fans and friends revolved around "did she/didn't she?' plastic surgery analysis and circumspection. I didn't take to the music on Hard Candy in the same way I had to her previous albums. I, like many other fans, had enjoyed the increasing creative influence of Stuart Price, and had hoped for Eurocentric Madonna to prevail. But Hard Candy was Madonna's clapback to Guy Ritchie's English fantasy/nightmare, and I accepted that I was essentially two steps behind, something I have always assumed whenever Madonna has made me uncomfortable or when my devotion has faltered...I know for a fact with hindsight that Madonna and Ritchie had split long before their relationship was publicly dissolved. It made sense that the entire HC era was an act of implicit rebellion. I have reassessed my experience of that period of her career and my life in accordance with that understanding! And that is where I was going with all of this...Thanks for being patient enough to get this far! When I was growing up and Madonna was ubiquitous and omnipotent, the channels that delivered her message and her vision targeted the masses. Everyone was exposed to the mainstream. There were fewer choices, and therefore there was more opportunity for an established act to have a huge cultural impact. Madonna was hyperaware of that rare opportunity and she made it work for her no matter the consequences. That hasn't been true for a good while - for her and any other artist for that matter - and so I think it is impossible to have the same experience of Madonna as we were lucky enough to experience twenty or thirty years ago. Madonna has produced music that I find exquisite and deeply moving in the last ten years that will never reach the ears that heard Material Girl or Vogue or Into The Groove. It doesn't make it lesser in quality in my opinion, but I know the lack of cultural impact of a song like Masterpiece makes it seem a diminished work in many people's minds. That's how I perceive things in any case. I love this debate by the way! Please keep it going!3 points

To a degree that's true, especially during this album cycle, I think Madame X is a great album with a great concept but since it didn't do well commercially some people judged it harshly. However I do think that many people lost interest in her for a reason, and it's not just age. As a person, I know that she's a bit narcissistic, but I do miss the kabbalah days of a bit more kindness and introspection, and a message that came more from the heart rather than ego. To me her ego has exploded again in recent years, and while I'm not trying to tell a woman what to do or how to be, as a human being i do think that narcissism is the problem not the solution. I hope that I will still see a kinder, more open version of herself in the future, and more joyful too.3 points

There's really no excuse that's good enough for the tardiness at this point. It's not like anyone attending the show can just go hang out at a bar until the show starts. And no, not everyone in Paris is sleeping at midnight on a weekend, but let's see how this goes over on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Having sat in 4 of Madame X's audiences, the waiting and the no phone policy do make it feel slightly hostage-like. ?2 points -

No hating but...what happened to Madonna after 2007?
Voguerista and one other reacted to dankpepe for a topic
I think it's partly due to lack of inspiration. She said it herself that her past few releases lacked inspiration and were done just to fulfill contractual obligations. Not saying she didn't put effort into them, but they lacked passion. With HC, it didn't sound like a Madonna record and the visuals seemed odd (an old fashioned boxer in front of images of candy??). MDNA - she sounded bored and half of it could've been a throwaway Britney Spears record. RH - had some great beats but too many cooks in the kitchen leaving some tracks too "busy". Compare any of the songs on those records to her previous output (i.e. Hung Up, Get Together, Don't Tell Me, Beautiful Stranger, Frozen, Secret, Bedtime Story, Erotica, Deeper and Deeper, etc) and they don't stand the test of time. They're all throwaway pop songs. If she ever did a farewell tour, we all know which tracks fans / non-fans would want the most. So I think it's just a lack of passion / inspiration mixed with ego of nothing left to accomplish. She knows she's Madonna and knows she can do above average sales figures on tour for her name value alone. So I think she just doesn't have that sense of urgency to make a big record anymore.2 points -

I'm still irritated that she postponed my 2/18 show, it's was going to cost me $3000 to rearrange my trip to March, and $2500 to go to London and try to replace 3 refunded Paris tickets, along with round trip train/flight to London.2 points -

I honestly don't feel that way about Madonna's music at all. I think her music and her voice have only improved with time. She cannot help that a large majority of her fanbase and the general public associate the hits of the first 15-20 years of her career with an idealized version of her iconic legacy. At the end of the day, her fans want her to be loved, and it seems evident that when she isn't given accolades and adulation she is seen as a diminished version of her former self. I'm not stating this to be your perspective, but I do feel this is often the case for other fans, and in turn this becomes the collective narrative.2 points -

Ok, it is all well and good, but why did her music suffer? If it is indeed the soundtrack to a show, and she expects people to go to the show so she can profit, then the music should still be top notch, what happened is the question... her shows and their musical direction have also suffered. Obviously there's still been brilliant things here and there, but there was a change, maybe she lost interest to some degree.2 points -

Well now that he's done producing Pet Shop Boys album trilogy--maybe he'll get back together with Madonna. I would die for a Madonna album produced by Stuart and the PSB. I want Madonna to go high camp disco party next with drag fashion, big groovy beats and dance moves, hints of freestyle, acid music and Chicago house a la Roisin Murphy. I think it would only be the most obvious choice and progression for Madame X. Add Sufjan Stevens to this production team and it would be total bliss. This gay boy can dream big!2 points -

I was obsessed with Stuart's production in the early 2000s, no matter his moniker, so when I heard that he was coming to Australia for Good Vibrations I was so excited. I decided to just go to his DJ side-gig in Melbourne, and even designed a Thin White Duke tee to wear to the event. The DJ set itself was incredible. As the Scissor Sisters were playing the same festival, Baby Daddy and Ana Matronic were in the crowd, dancing along. At one point, Stuart dropped a track that included the Abba sample and I remember it sounding really souped-up and hot. During the song, I noticed that Stuart was taking a photo/filming us in the crowd, and even nudged my friend to take notice. "Haha, isn't that funny", I said to her. After the DJ set, Stuart left and we left too, and on the way out I noticed him and Ana walking off into the Melbourne CBD, hand-in-hand. Cut forward to October of that year while I was in NYC during an EU and US backpacking trip, and I am at The Roxy, watching Madonna dance to Stuart's remixes of Hung Up and other yet-to-be-heard tracks from COAD, while he is on the decks. For these reasons, COAD remains a very special and magical album era for me.2 points -
