  4. I'm fully prepared to be dragged for this but I think we should have this conversation. Confessions is an album that has aged very well, the production is amazing, and it was cool of her to release an album of this style in the middle of the 2000s. That being said, a great portion of the songs just aren't very good. In fact, the production might be so good that they hide the fact that many of the songs are quite weak on their own. The album does have great songs like Hung Up, Get Together, Let It Will Be, and How High, but the rest just isn't great. Madonna herself doesn't seem to be a fan of this album either, which is why after the era was finished she stopped performing songs from it (besides hung up on the occasional tour). Confessions was the beginning of her creative decline, where she started feeling obligated to make a certain type of music after American Life (one of her best albums) flopped. Thankfully Madonna's creative spirit lives on with Madame X. It's not that I don't like dance music, her 80s albums are great examples of dance music well done, because the songs themselves are actually good and can stand on their own if they were to be stripped down and played acoustically. Even Hard Candy and MDNA are at least good for working out to. Most of the songs on Confessions are too slow to work out to or even dance to, but too fast to just listen to while relaxing at home. I'm always confounded to see Confessions consistently ranked in the top 3 of most Madonna fans album ranking; people really like Confessions more than masterpieces like Ray of Light, Erotica, or Like A Prayer? Really? I think fans at the time were just happy to see Madonna making music for the dance floor again, but the album really is a sad shadow of what her dance music used to be. The album definitely sounds better in the mixed version, but that just adds to my point that it's the production techniques that makes the album seem good, not the songs themselves. Anyways, I think it's time to stop pretending like Confessions is her best/only good album of this century. Every time she releases something new, it's always compared to Confessions or called "her best work since confessions", as if nothing she does will ever measure up. I am not saying it's a bad album I just think it's overrated and honestly maybe one of the most overrated pop albums of this century (because of how incredibly highly it is regarded). Anyone else agree? disagree? let's discuss

  5. Hi guys! Now that we are officially in a Madonna drought and also self isolating because of coronavirus I have decided to launch my Madonna YouTube channel. Each week I will be covering a new era in a little 5-10 minute documentary starting with the Madonna era in 1983. So far I have edited a segment for each era in the 80's and it includes everything from albums, tours, films etc. There are 22 segments for the 80's in total and of course I hope to do the rest in time. The idea of this page is to share her history with casual and new fans and also of course for us long term fans to enjoy a trip down memory lane. It will feature lots of interviews, rare clips, interviews with other people involved in her projects etc. I hope you all enjoy it! And thank you to everyone on this forum who have shared videos over the years as a lot of the content has come from here and I couldn't have done it without you. Sorry that I probably can't credit you all individually as that would involve knowing who each video came from and its kind of impossible. But thank you! Before I launch it I am trying to get more followers and have made a little trailer which covers her entire career in a 1 minute clip. Hope nobody has an anxiety attack watching it! EDIT: I will be posting full episodes on Vimeo

  6. I had an idea of Madonna doing mini promotional tours with one of her singles and album. I created one for Ray of Light with her last is single Nothing Really Matters, and one for American Life with her second single Hollywood. The Ray of Light promotional tour would take place after the 1999 Grammys. the tour would be exclusive to major cites (eg. New York City, London, Paris). it'll have 8-10 shows (2 per city). NOTHING REALLY MATTERS: Promotional Tour 1999 Set List 01. Drowned World / Substitute for Love 02. Ray of Light 03. Swim 04. Candy Perfume Girl Skin (Performance Interlude) 05. Shanti / Ashtangi 06. Frozen (contains elements of William Orbit's Widescreen Mix)** 07. The Power of Good-Bye 08. Sky Fits Heaven To Have and Not to Hold (Band Interlude) (contains elements of "La Isla Bonita") 09. Oh Father (Orchestral Version) 10. Mer Girl 11. Little Star 12. Bedtime Story (William Orbit Reworked Mix) Encore: 13. Nothing Really Matters (contains elements of "Kruder & Dorfmeister Mix")** **: Performed as the Album Version on second dates The American Life Promotional tour would start 2 days after the album release. This would be similar to the Tower Records performance and Live Television performances (Eg. MTV Studios, RTL, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, etc). I'll take place in major cities (New York City, Paris, London, etc). In addition, the tour will have a 2 different set lists. AMERICAN LIFE: Promotional Mini Tour 2003 Set List #1 01. American Life 02. Don't Tell Me 03. Nothing Fails 04. Like a Prayer (Acoustic) 05. X-Static Process 06. Mother and Father Like a Virgin [Band Interlude] 07. American Life [Spoken word] 08. Hollywood 09. Music (contains elements of "Trans-Europe Express" and "Holiday") Set List #2 01. American Life (Acoustic) 02. Mother Father 03. X-Static Process 04. Nothing Fails 05. Like a Prayer (Acoustic) Like a Virgin [Band Interlude] 06. Don't Tell Me 07. American Life 08. Hollywood 09. Music (contains samples and elements from "Die Another Day" along with elements of "Trans-Europe Express" by Kraftwork)

  7. So many great Holiday performances, but, I think I'm going with Blonde Ambition as my favorite. Post inspired by @groovyguyin the Today In Madonna History thread. Which "Holiday" performance is your favorite?

  8. It's this one for me. From her dress (it was a great color for her), her thigh-high boots, and her 'oversized' bunny ears plucked right off the Louis Vuitton fall 2009 runway. Stunning!

It's been said that she's next to the editor at all or most times. That's why her shows look like... that.

  10. I went back and watched them all again, since I'm so bored and stuck at home! This is actually really, really tough. I like all of them in their own unique ways. The Virgin Tour performance is brilliant in it's simplicity. It just feels so easy and joyful. It's very much of it's time and that tour. With the heavier rock guitar, I guess she wanted a sound that would really fill the stadiums she was playing on the Who's That Girl Tour. I don't dislike it but this might be my least favourite. Blond Ambition is perfect. To me, this IS Holiday, probably because it's the closest to the Immaculate Collection. Then again, I love how it evolved in the Girlie Show with the military theme, and the call and response with the audience. I hadn't even thought about it until now, but it was a great way to incorporate the dominance and submission themes of the Erotica album and Girlie Show, into a song that has absolutely nothing to do with either. The Drowned World Tour performance mashed-up with Stardust was so effortlessly cool, but it lacked the scale of the 2 previous tours, with all the dancers on the stage together. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, because it fit the tour really well, and there was something very special about seeing M flanked by Nicki and Donna again, which showed how much she (and her audience) had matured and grown over the years. Re-Invention might've been my second least favourite when I first saw it, only because it's so different and takes a while before the melody kicks in, but... in a way that's what makes it so cool! It builds, and builds, and builds, until it explodes into the song we all know and love! I just wish it were longer. The Sticky & Sweet Celebration performance has so much energy, but it was extremely poignant too. I remember seeing both shows at the O2 London where MJ would have performed his final This Is It concert series. It was heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time, and a genuine moment where everyone in the arena applauded. As a fan of both, I felt so sad to think I would never see MJ perform again, but at the same time, so grateful and happy to have Madonna still around. Which leaves Rebel Heart (& Tears of a Clown). I don't dislike the Rebel Heart performance but there isn't anything about it that particularly sticks in my mind. The flags around the world had already been done in Reinvention and the arrangement is basically the same as the first album with a couple of breakdowns added. I always find it odd when people walk out of concerts before the final song because they're so desperate to beat the traffic, but in this instance I honestly wouldn't have cared if I'd missed it. In fact I'll go so far as saying I would've preferred to end the show with the original Avicii uptempo mix of Rebel Heart, although I appreciate that wouldn't have been as a good a crowd-pleaser! All that said, I think the evolution of Holiday is a brilliant example of what make Madonna so special and unique as a performer. To evolve a song in so many ways is the very reason why she's remained so interesting to me over the years. Most veteran performers have a tick-list of songs on their set-lists, so you know exactly what you're getting, but Madonna doesn't want to just repeat herself, and I love the ways she's re-invented her back catalogue over each tour, particularly in the latter part of her career. It doesn't always work to everyone's satisfaction, but it always keeps things interesting. Great question!

  12. Don't listen to your fans too much if you make choices to please us, it means you're artistically dead, you know what you can do and what you want to do : keep on working on music you will be proud of, listen to your instinct and have fun in the process.

  13. By fans? Bed Time Stories and partly Erotica. ____ Other than that Confessions remains one of her best tunes which aged like fine wine. The whole concept is great, both of the record itself, and the era. We were treated so well during that era. She was everywhere during that time. Fans, GP and media loved her alike. Ugh. And it also spawned her best tour to date. So how can this album possibly be overrated?

  14. I'd love her to do some 80's-vibish synth pop, like Dua and The Weekend have done with their latest records. And less political motivated songs.

  15. This is tough! Blond Ambition and Girlie Show are absolute classics, but I'm going with Sticky & Sweet. I loved the remix with Celebration and the MJ breakdown was awesome. It was such an uplifting moment in the show and I wish it had been included as an extra on the DVD (along with Frozen and Dress You Up).

  19. You nailed it! It's one of her least inspired albums. Like a prayer: I'm going to add a new level of depth and vulnerability to my music and I will explore my childhood, my religious upbringing, my relationship to authority figures, divorce and death of my mother. Erotica: I'm going to take a huge risk for my career to show how it's okay to be sexual and have fantasies. Also let's talk about AIDS Ray of light: I have been spiritually reborn thanks to motherhood. This is my religion. American Life: what is wrong with society and capitalism? Why are we all so obsessed with material things? Where is my life going? Should I change? What do I want? Confessions: I WANT TO DANCE LOOOOOOL I'm not saying it's bad, I love it. But it is just a collection of random songs that only sound cohesive because of the production. The lyrics of I love New York are among her worst works. Also Future lovers and Push are pretty bad too

  26. Ill be suprised if she makes positive and happy Dance songs, with little to no AUTOTUNE. No more heavy, dark, depressive sh*T!

  27. I'm convinced Live To Tell is about her abortion from Jellybeans baby that happened before the Virgin Tour hence her being "chubby" for the first time ever. Weird that she followed it up with a song about pro-life in Papa Don't Preach and then danced with a child in the Open Your Heart video and rounded off with the La Isla Bonita video playing our the virgin and the whore. I imagine True Blue was a bittersweet time for Madonna.

  32. I said Give it 2 Me cause it's actually listenable, the other one was (IMO) one of her worst lead singles to date. It's cute, but it's get annoying.

  33. I loved that this era also overlapped with the excitement around IGTYAS. What a time to be ALIVE!

  34. I'd personally like her to leave her dark sound behind. Madame X is a serious, dark album, also Rebel Heart had a cold sound, with Kanye also pushing the production to that direction, at least for the first bunch of tracks. I'd like an easy to the ear record now, summery one and Europe friendly. With tracks like Ciao Bella, Miles Away, even I'm a sinner. So if she were to follow some older path, I'd very much like a modern True Blue. Her bringing light into dark places should be with a light album. Medellin was kinda going to that direction but the production didn't let the song explode, there was no vocal climax either.

  35. I'm with you on that. The whole era was amazing, loved the visuals, the references, the promo, the tour and it was the last time Madonna was so universally loved and appreciated, great time to be a fan for sure. The album however is one I rarely listen to. I remember being excited about Price working with her cause I loved his stuff with Zoot Woman and Les Rhythms Digitales and I recall feeling disappointed upon hearing the full album as it lacked grit and edginess of those productions. Tellingly, the real standout track is one Price didn't produce, namely Future Lovers. I feel people like to hold "Confessions..." in such high regard largely due to the fact it was very easy to be a Madonna fan around that time - she became much more polarising again afterwards, whether musically or due to her personal choices/politics. Personally, that's why I love Madonna. If I wanted a safe disco bunny I'd listen to Kylie.

  40. As for the blues part of the question, her most bluesy songs are the ones she wrote with Joe Henry and Mirwais, believe it or not. Blues is also a matter of singing, not only production and instrumentation. I'm a great blues fans so that would be great. M as Johnny Cash = lovely.
    1 point
  41. No Mirwais for next album please - his production sounds dated and she needs new sounds and a decent songwriter to collaborate with ( Patrick Leonard said he would love to work with her again ) ? I’m not fussed on the genre of music I just want it to be original
