  2. It's incredibly interesting to see how each fan sees Madonna, her success and her relationship to other female pop singers, but so rarely interesting to hear how new pop acts use Madonna as a point of reference. Of course Madonna will always be the one to emulate as her global influence is unprecedented, and now unsurpassable. However, for every pop bitch that has come and gone since Madonna arrived on the cultural landscape there has been the same reaction in the fanbase! And this one will disappear like all the others because the material is mediocre and the singer doesn't come from an organic synergy of originality, creativity or rebellion. These pop singers are manufactured placeholders. The gays love a dance floor diva, and Due Lipa's tunes are decent, but completely lacking in uniqueness! At this point the pandering to the pink dollar is no more than an integral part of a business plan. Madonna didn't go after anyone's money; she happened, and made a lot of coin as a result of the magic she created. You can fabricate pop music, but it doesn't have legs if it doesn't mean anything. As for Madonna's peak, how arrogant to state that she reached her plateau of success in her 40's! I presume she is referring to Ray Of Light, which was actually recorded and released when Madonna was still in her 30's (39 to be precise). If we are talking Madonna's commercial peak, then indeed @TonyMontanais correct. 1987 was just that. Her singles and albums were selling massively without her needing to do almost any promotion. She was a teen idol! If we are talking her cultural peak, I'd say 1990 is an easy contender, but I'd venture as far as to question if 1992 wasn't truly her peak as she had become such a global socio-cultural catalyst that her vagina was more talked about than her music! If we are talking artistically, one could argue that Like A Prayer, Ray Of Light, Music or Madame X were her peak. Personally, I think Madonna is such a vibrant force of nature that she never peaks. You cannot experience anything she does now without taking into consideration everything she has done before, and while that might not interest as many people as it did twenty or thirty years ago, it packs an unprecedented punch.

  3. In my humble opinion, the japanese CDs are not remastered, just properly transferred to CD. Maybe they turned the volume up a little, or similar, but I wouldn't say they are properly remastered (like "Madonna", "Like A Virgin" and "True Blue"). "Mastering is about optimising audio for best performance on given media or format (Vinyl, Cassette, CD,...) Ideally, remasters are old tracks that go through that same final process that they went through before, with newer technology. Remasters are often louder than the original tracks. However, some would consider the original masters better. Depending on the engineer who does the remaster, the song may sound “squashed”, because the engineer tried to bring all the levels (lows, mids, highs) up too much. However, this is not always the case. Not all remasters are louder, some do improve the clarity and sound of a song (or album). Again, that depends on the engineer and their taste." I always say this: The album "Like A Prayer" needs a remaster because you can't hear the bass (the singles doesn't have this problem) and the album "Ray of light" needs just a little more treble. The rest are perfect (I'm not talking about the horrible loudness war present in every album after "Music", I'm talking about the original recordings.)

  4. I'd take the birth lyric more literally. She is talking about getting the kids ready and taking them to school before. A school where they may never come back from after some mass shooting. So each new birth, every new child coming to this world, gives her hope that their story, their school years might be different and free of fear. That's why she won't smoke that dope and shut up about all that's going on.

  5. Yes there is a Freddie/Jacksons version of State Of Shock in demo form. Only song that has never been released from their sessions is the title track of the Jacksons Victory album. Side note this should not be in Madonna news and discussion because it's not Madonna related at all.

  7. She’s had plenty of opportunities to release legacy stuff but still we get nothing - I don’t believe that LAP cd / dvd box set was ever a genuine release and I think it was just a rumour hyped by fans - pretty cruel if you ask me Going back to Prince though - I know he’s recorded a lot of songs that never made his albums but I still think he was much more about quantity over quality and I don’t think he would have wanted all these songs released- I have all his special edition cd box sets and I can honestly say most of the unreleased stuff is pretty mediocre - I mean I think he’s a musical genius and performer ( he’s in my top 3 fave icons ) and I think the estate are doing a great job with all these releases - I’m more excited in getting in concerts remastered for dvd as up until now most are in very poor quality ( nude tour and parade tours are the worst ) the CDs to me are just filler for the most part

  8. I used to think Taylor Swift was a singing piece of celery. I've changed my mind on that. Personality aside her voice is really delicate to listen to. Her phrasing is perfect and her songwriting , (when she's not pandering to 5 yr olds), is spectacular. She really knows her way round a story and a pop song and if you listen on headphones some of the production it utterly stellar. I don't see the need to rip other pop girls down to give Madonna more height. Did Madonna teach us nothing? She's the best Periodt. It's not a zero sum game.

  9. That box, to me, is the best sounding Madonna 1982-1996 CD release, no other version compares. All the songs sound great without distortion or issues. I thought it had been subtly remastered/boosted for CD from the original masters but maybe they were properly transferred from master to CD format.

  11. U know when CD's first hit the market in he UK. There was many a tale in the Papers about people claiming they sounded AWFUL. And gave them a headache, no matter the genre or volume. That gadget that make young people feels sick was on the TV again the other night.

  12. well in America when you say "I don't smoke that dope" it means that you just don't go for that -whatever "that" may be, could be anything- , same as saying I don't drink that KoolAid or I don't believe in that; something along those lines , so yeah an analogy like the one @Gilbert mentioned

  13. over all, i think you nailed it. though i am sure if we asked her point blank, she may give us something different. it is possible that we might be reading more into it or possibly not interpreting the way she does. but i am sure she prefers it that way since she likes that her lyrics creates discussion and multiple interpretations. not sure if you intended that the "dope" lines really have anything to do with drugs. personally, i think it is an analogy in being complacent (as you stated), not allowing whatever to distort one's mind or not following what everyone else does.

  14. People think that I'm insane People think that her views on guns are crazy The only gun is in my brain I think as an artist, she views her brain and thoughts as a weapon Each new birth, it gives me hope constantly moving forward in life, becoming better, changing with the times That's why I don't smoke that dope I think literally, that's why she doesn't smoke weed... it makes you complacent and fogs your judgement Insane people think I am she's saying the same thing as line 1 jumbled, but also labels the "other" as insane this time Brain inside, my only friend her clear minded brain is what helps her navigate this world and is her only friend (in the video Madonna at the typewriter is her brain, frantically typing to try and save Discodonna from being shot) Hope it gives me birth each new again, the line is a jumbled version of the 3rd line, giving a slightly different meaning That dope I don't smoke, it's true" jumbled 4th line meaning roughly the same thing

  16. "People think that I'm insane" Gun supporters, avid second amendment enthusiasts and those who use the argument who say "Guns don't kill people" who argue against repeals, banning and gun control proposed legislation and use the crazy liberal/taking away my rights. The criticism people receive for it. "The only gun is in my brain" Basically, we decide to keep them in circulation and to keep perpetuating the ongoing violence going on as long as they are available, capable of stopping it but don't, thus the gun we all possess responsible for blood on our hands by not doing more. "Each new birth, it gives me hope Each new birth that possibly that person may be the one to push new reform, changes or a movement that will stick and stop the madness and carnage we witness. "That's why I don't smoke that dope" She doesn't view it as a lost cause that we should shelter, implement measures to make ourselves fearful as put by the NRA and being at the mercy of weapons but still keeping glimmers of hope that things will change and she doesn't drink the Kool-Aid. The rest is basically is a play on words of the first verses but in TL:DR fashion: People think she's insane for wanting to implement change along with others who voice the same sentiments due to loving guns, strong Constitutionalists, when it isn't impossible. We are all capable of doing the same thing but can stop it but don't. With every new person born, there's hope that this person may be the one to change things thus she doesn't give into the fearmongering pushed that gun control or limitations isn't impossible or unattainable.

  17. I think the dope she is referring to is the general idea about guns - majority thinking they are ok. Like for example, in the U.S., gun owners see no issue with owning or carrying guns. Many think the acts of violence *mass shootings etc* has nothing to do with guns and that it is all in our heads. They think it is just a random crazy person who suddenly loses it. She doesn't smoke that dope, she doesn't believe that, in other words she doesn't buy into that naive thinking and refusal to change.

  20. I would literally live off bread and water if they released box sets like this for her first album, Like A Prayer, Erotica, Bedtime Stories, Ray Of Light, Confessions, Hard Candy. I still think it's crazy how none of her albums have had the remastered expanded deluxe treatment. I want all her albums released with all the outtakes, demos, alternate versions, edits, remixes in one place. I'm tired of trying to download all the different demos out there etc... She should do it now whilst she's still alive and reep the rewards from it, at this stage I'd prefer this than a new album. The Prince releases are amazing and I'm a huge fan of his, but I somehow feel bad buying them after his passing. It will be the same with Madonna, if all this stuff is released after she is no longer with us it's a little bittersweet and I'd rather her be involved with it all and not have some label damaging her legacy and making all the cash from it. Hopefully one day we will get these and the tours in blu-ray

  21. I think Madonna does not want Warner make dollars off her back now. She did like being sued for Maverick and having to sell her parts in the company. (even though the ceo's who sued her are maybe retired now or left). One thing that frightens me with M is if she's ever to make remastered deluxe versions of her albums, she'll have a hand in them and if she does to themwhat she does editing her concerts...... Even PJ Harvey will have ALL her back catalogue including b-sides and demos re-released between this late august and 2021.

  22. Madonna isn't signed to Warner and Madonna isn't dead. The Prince estate has a whole team dedicated to putting these things together and working with Warner to put them out. Plus Prince was signed to Warner before his passing. I wouldn't expect a release like this from Madonna anytime soon, that is until the album masters fall back into Madonna's hands like 3-5 years from now. If Warner won't re-certify Madonna's past albums, then they certainly won't work with her in putting together a super deluxe anniversary release. And if Guy O isn't going to manage a release like this, then I don't know how it's going to happen. BUT There was that LAP 4-disc re-release rumored earlier this year. The same time that a "Sign O' The Times" LP re-issue in peach colored vinyl that was rumored for RSD, then cancelled, but now it's finally coming out released along side all of the anniversary re-issues. So maybe we might get something after all!

  24. Good news is she now has a blueprint of what Warner could do if she agrees to do it. This new Deluxe Edition and the one for "1999" are both AMAZING. Also, Rhino have remastered all Alanis' "Jagged Little Pill" videos in 4K for the 25th anniversary and the results are promising: They'll be releasing a new 4K video each week from today. The fact that Warner/Rhino are behind all of this is great. Maybe Madonna is ready to milk her back catalogue now that big tours are not in the pipeline at least for the next year/two years?

Let’s just enjoy this beautiful portrait of M by Curtis Knapp for Island Magazine. A timeless shot! What I like about it is that you can’t say it’s from 80’s at all... her makeup, hair... ? anyone got the actual magazine? Is the magazine still running? I can imagine this shot for her Something To Remember album! ?

  36. 2020 standards?? No, never. Thank You. Don't destroy her music with awful remasters. Only the album "Like A Prayer" needs a proper remaster (not its singles). Ironically the 80 albums has the best sound quality: http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list/year?artist=madonna (check the dynamic range)

  38. I find Future Nostalgia a wee bit overated. Like..It's a cute girl and all but it's just because it's unashamedly pop that the gays have gone mad for it. Some good bopps though but the over used Your Woman sample in Love Again is yawn and the last two tracks ruin an otherwise good album. So yeah 7 decent tracks and the dodgy title track.
