  1. Definitely what everyone has already said. For me, it was after Playboy and Penthouse published her nude photographs without her consent. And she famously replied "So what?". Even though she felt like her skin had been ripped off and mortified by what her father would think, she never showed it. I think that was when she became controversial. People expected and wanted her to be ashamed. And I really think that "so what?" was the moment. It was even immortalized by a Keith Haring/ Andy Warhol collaboration.

  2. Hi, I'm new here. I always felt I was born about 10 years too late because I LOVE LOVE the '80s even though I'm a millennial born at the tail end of that decade so of course I don't remember it ;). I'm an avid Michael Jackson fan too, but right now I'm freaking obsessed with '80s Madonna, especially her whole persona with her first two albums. One thing that dawned on me while watching her first tour on You Tube over and over(pun intended) was how relatively tame it was. Sure there's some suggestive choreography here and there and showing her stomach would've been considered a bit "immodest" by Reagan-era standards, but was she always considered edgy and controversial by the public? How was she perceived by most people circa 1984-1985? I love this era so much, and would love to hear insight from people who were alive at the time as what her fandom was like then and how most people perceived her then.

  3. Can we please agree not to call it DVD? DVD is so 2001. It’s 2021, it’s Blu-Ray and hopefully 4K stream with it, at least. Let’s not jinx this to be another Kylie disaster.

  6. What could you picture Madonna in, in terms of outfits/looks/photoshoots? Here‘s a look I could picture her in: (Please keep negative opinions out, thank you.)

  7. Spotify is also very general public/general music consumer orientated. I know some hyper fans (not only Madonna's) who listen to everything 100% on streaming, but it's not the general rule for older artists. Personally, I like a little bit of everything. I use Spotify but I still buy music on iTunes (and physical when I can) to support the artist and tag it the way I like, etc. etc. I know Madonna doesn't need money but I still feel is the right thing to do. Of course streaming is here to stay and maybe some day we'll just be forced to use it cause it's the only or best option available. The thing is: she needs to connect with the general audiences again. That middle age lady who used to love Madonna's music but doesn't care for her since "Confessions"; the general music fan who respects giants like her; the young music fan discovering old music. She needs to remember people how brilliant her back catalogue is. Remastering her videos and getting classic maxis/EPs available on digital is a step in the right direction. And of course the biopic can do wonders for her. I'm sorry to bring out Kylie again but she went from 1/2 million monthly listeners on Spotify last year to 17 million at the moment (and of course not all those are hardcore Kylie fans). Of course her remix with Dua Lipa has helped and also her Christmas hits, but her team has been great in getting the general public in with the campaign of her last album.

    Madame X Tour DVD

If she added The Virgin Tour Whos That Girl Blond Ambition The Girlie Show DWT Reinvention and complete Confessions that would be the equivalent of an additional seven double albums worth of streamable content available online with Madame X to come. It’s a no brainier. I do think that dvd and blu ray have had their day. Save the physical release for a career box set. Like the singles being uploaded to streaming I can see the tours being added to steaming and you tube to increase her streaming presence. This will likely come a year after a deal with Prime or Netflix to release her past tours on streaming platforms. likely following the drip feed singles format. One every quarter over the next two years in the lead up to The biopic. That would be great promotion and a rise in visibility. Twin this with the singles being uploaded and her past Videos being reuploaded in HD and the entire history of Audio visual Madonna is there ready and primed waiting for the inevitable new fan base, reignited fan base of yesteryear and people who enjoyed the movie to delve into. Music has become like a casual purchase of a chocolate bar at the check out when you are there buying other stuff. The content needs to be there on display before people will just impulse listen or buy. People ain’t got time to be waiting around anymore like it’s Christmas. Her team are slowly getting everything in place ready for the biopic to blast her streaming numbers into orbit and secure her legacy proper. It’s probably why the the Like A Prayer box set was put on hold now I think about it. Probably gonna be. 35 yr anniversary in 2025 (a year late) a year after the biopic with a slew of 35/40th anniversary releases. Madonna 40 (2023), Like A Virgin 40 (2024) Like A Prayer 35(2025) True Blue 40 (2026) Erotica 35 (2027) Ray Of Light 30 (2028) Bedtime Story 35 (2029) Music 30 (2030) Most of her fans will be dead by the time we get to 2030 and plastic CDs will be ilegal so Music will be the last physical.

  12. Oh man, you touched such a sensitive subject with that hahah *cue life story that nobody asked for* My mother was born with polio and in a society that was extremely discriminatory towards disabled people - even though she was soooo smart and beautiful, she couldn't get a job and just settled with my father who was, like a lot of the men at the time, a controlling sexist macho-man b*stard. My mother ended up having 3 kids and I was the youngest of them all, and from a young age I fought my own father so my mother could be able to do basic things like going out alone or even getting a driver's license (yes, it was THAT bad...). Enter Madonna in my life at 13 years old and now I have two mother figures who are the total opposite of each other. I felt like Madonna was my "spiritual" mother, strong and fearless, guiding me through a difficult adolescence. On the other side my mother, a woman broken down by society and marriage, devalued, discriminated. This dichotomy was very hard for me. There were a few years when whenever I had a problem I genuinely would think "What would Madonna do?" instead of asking my mother for advice. 15 years later I no longer think like this of course, and my mother fortunately has become much more independent (and Madonna much more cringy... how the tables have turned ), but I'll always see M as my spiritual mother, the one who shaped and molded me, giving me advice through her lyrics and raising my self-esteem during troubled times. My mother as the type of woman Madonna was fighting for.

  14. Her reinventions, that's what drew me the most and kept me as a fan. I've always loved different versions of the same thing (weird mania I have, don't ask why), and in 2021 she STILL is the only artist to have successfully reinvented yourself to the point of creating different personas (Dita, Madame X, etc). It's like every era had a concept, a theme, an aesthetic - and I'm a sucker for that. She did it soooo much better than any other artist. Some other artists have tried (Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, etc) but they feel a bit forced sometimes, whereas with Madonna it was very natural.

  15. Uhm, you do realise that image quality has little to do with the actual production cost? It's like watching a 10th generation VHS copy of "ET" and saying the movie looks low budget.

Straight...and not closeted about my love for M at all. Most of my other musical tastes are more towards the indie rock spectrum, but nevery tried to hide my Madge obsession. Been a fan since 1983 at the start, and no plans to change. But true what you say, back in the early days.....everyone was into her.

  18. This is very difficult..so many great photoshoots, can`t decide. But these pictures are among my very favorite series of Madonna: 1. All Vanity Fair magazine photoshoots :-) 2. Harper`s Bazaar 1990, 1994 & 2017 3. Herb Ritts shoots for True Blue, Blond Ambition Tourbook, Girlie Show Book Don`t like: 1. W Magazine 2008, Dolce & Gabbana 2009, Louis Vuitton Bunny ears, Hard Candy album shoots, Madame X eye patch

  19. Veronica Biopica Jokes aside though, she might give it a biblical term twisted name in true M fashion. A few catchy ones could be Madonna's Revelation or Gospel of Madonna. Something playing with words like The Immaculate Collection did.

I don’t understand why she wouldn’t be wanting to get these things out sooner. I mean, none of us are getting any younger. Don’t you think the bitch would like to live to see the day her fans gag over such releases? Everyone would be talking about it, feeding her ego. Beyond me. She probably doesn’t give af to be honest lol.

  23. 80's Madonna: Softcore 90's Madonna: Hardcore
    2 points
  24. I think 84 - 86 she was considered a threat. A lot of it was overblown because "THINK OF THE CHILDREN" and Tipper Gore was after anyone that wasn't as uptight as her. Back then she had a free and fun sexuality that got more serious, dark and edgy the more everyone gave her a hard time. 89 - 93 Madonna (still sorta 80's) was far more edgy and controversial and she seemed a lot more in your face about it. I think any woman in the 80's that enjoyed their sexuality and sex and their body was considered controversial or as many called her "a slut".

  25. So good to have people discovering her. i was very young about 12 yrs old when she started and she was super controversial from the beginning. Some kids werent allowed to listen to Like a virgin at all. It probably seems very tame now but there was no one taking such a control of their sexual presence other than male artsits like Prince The MTV awards performance Of Like A Virgin was splashed all over the papers and she has even mentioned in later interviews that her manager said to her after that performance that she was over! career is finished. How wrong they were. Cyndi Lauper ( another artist to check out if you havent yet) started at the same time and pop was all about them 2 with michael Jackson. Everyone thought Cyndi had the staying power and madonna was just a flash in the pan. Once again Madonna proved them wrong. Huge turn around from the Public when Live to tell hit. People really started to take her seriously and she was more than just a pop artists. Enjoy all the early years they were GOLD

  34. One reason has got to be her voice. I feel like I could hear it for the rest of my life if I had to choose one. There's something about it that draws my ears to it despite what she is singing and maybe this is why I'm not the most objective judge of her songs. I also have many reasons to admire her so I feel like she is a good example, representing hard work paying off but also doing things your way sometimes, to set you apart from the mass. Then, don't laugh, I kinda see her as a motherly figure. I do have a mother very much present in my life and M reminds me of her, both being blonde and strong women, but in the more accepting version, the more understanding one of who I am deep down.

  36. true, however music videos nowadays generally cost less than they used to 20+ years ago. MTV is not where it used to be anymore and the technology has advanced so all the technical/graphic work is cheaper as well

    Wannabe's!

I wonder when exactly her fan base became more gay male. 86/87 or was it with Vogue/Blond? Her explosion in 85 was all about the girls wanting to be like her which is fenomenal, but we don't see many women in her fan base anymore (of course there's the casual listener but you know...)
