Madonna and ageism - where lies the problem?
MDMWhat and 3 others reacted to OhBabyReadyOrNot for a topic
Madonna is part of the problem. She's always been very vain and superficial and that has come to bite her in the butt because people now ask: How can a woman, so obsessed with perfection, go downhill, both physically and career-wise? The answer: It always does. Nothing lasts forever. As for Madonna just following her heart and supposedly going against the grain and doing what she wants to do, she's not doing anything the rest of us aren't doing. We're all doing our own thing and she shouldn't be cherished for following the herd mentality.4 points -

Mmmhm it's complicated. The fact that she had a worldwide pop hit AT 49 with "4 Minutes" is incredible. As you said, much younger posters now are considered "old" and "past". Katy Perry is still young but considered old for her game. I think there was a cultural shift after the 2009 financial crisis and the rise of social media. Everything is more focused in the moment since then, not the long run. And with older artists like Madonna the legacy is part of their power. I never thought Madonna would never be relevant or a main cultural force, but after 2012 she seems to be part of a previous world scheme that no longer exists? Not her fault, of course. The fact that she doesn't like to play the game does not help either. She could have joined a celebrities judge panel on "The Voice", "X Factor" whatever, but she'd never do that (thank God). Also, with her finally growing older people who want to attack her finally have a point, cause yes, she's old now. And we all are going to be one day. But people finally have a real excuse to attack her and feel validated. She has the right to do whatever she wants to do with her body. I think it's sad some fans (and general public) complain about her looks or what's she's done to her face/body/whatever but had no problem at all with all that when those looks fit the image they wanted to see (for instance, the "Confessions" era). She's not anyone's bitch. Ageism is the final battle for her: remember people were calling her "grandma" at 35. It sucks. And yes, it doesn't happen with men.4 points -

I genuinely think people are putting too much faith in her biopic. Madonna hasn't made one well-received movie and she 100% has too big of an ego to be able to approach the story of her life in any hint of objectivity. I don't want it to fail, but I'm not holding my breath for it being good or bringing about any sort of renaissance for her. Also, just because someone has a biopic out, it doesn't guarantee that it will be a hit. I'm not trying to bring anyone down, I just think we should manage our expectations here a bit. I'm just glad that the movie is likely responsible for her finally taking action and paying attention to her back catalogue and giving us all this stuff we should've had already years ago.4 points -

It came out of nowhere. That's all I remember. I remember watching the MTV VMA's that year and they dropped a tiny bit of a forthcoming video (or maybe it was during a MTV news segment) and it just looked incredibly dark and a bit scary. I was 13. But she'd done Justify My Love and Truth Or Dare was very edgy, so I didn't know what road she was going down, but I was excited. At the same time, A League Of Their Own and Playground were MASSIVE and so to have such a clean-cut movie/song and then pivot to Erotica, seemed insane. I got SEX for Christmas that year. I remember my parents talking about it with me and they weren't sure that I should be able to keep it after they saw what was inside, but I fought hard and kept it. A few months later (late Winter '93) I remember a Coles book store in the mall (I'm in Toronto, Canada) had stacks of French copies that no one wanted. Eww .. white English people don't want FRENCH? lol .. and they slashed the price and so I bought 3-4 copies for $29.99 and then kept them for years and then sold them for so much .. early flipping days, I guess. My copy is in pristine condition. I almost never ever touch it for fear that the metal spine will break or get fucked up as so many of them did. I still have the mylar bags. I think it was important for her to do it then. I have no regrets about it. Boring? Someone said they thought parts of it were boring. Sure. Depends maybe on who you were at the time and what you expected. I didn't know anything about those dark underworlds of gay culture back then, so it was exciting and educational and showed me options. And then when I found myself in my first scary hallway at a bathhouse/sex club/leather bar, I wasn't without expectation. I appreciate the education she provided a young gay kid .. when no one else would dare speak of such things or show such things. It's like she held my hand and said, "this is what you'll probably want to explore and so this is what it looks like. If you're not afraid then you're not doing it right." And then the world had a snit about the book and Madonna and feminism and they called her McDonna and openly slut shamed her for years and then she put out a ballad album and did Evita and moved on. You could blink and then it was 98 and she was sitting on a couch talking with Oprah about baby formula, so things were okay. I would say that until Erotica/Sex/Body Of Evidence, being a Madonna fan was easy. After the trilogy of those releases, it became increasingly more difficult. You were required to defend your love for her. It was suddenly cool to NOT like Madonna. And for a 12-13-14 year old, that could be hard because it's a time in your life when you seek acceptance and as little gay boys we already felt so excluded. So in some ways, SEX made our lives both more interesting and harder - but I think the end result is that we came through it like she did and it's why we feel such a strong bond and expect so much from her. And maybe why so many of us regard EROTICA as her best work. When Ray Of Light came out, it was like True Blue days, the world was bowing at her feet for her brilliance and the music and imagery and how mature she'd become and a mother .. and I was like, "but you fuckers ... burned her at the stake! and now you're all goo-goo-ga-ga for her??!" And same with MUSIC .. and then American Life, and it was like, "here we go again!"4 points -

From the last IG video, it seems that only some inserts were recorded. Probably some very specific close ups that needed to be reshot. She was done with shooting after two days, so it won't be so intrusive in the film cut. Also it seems she's willing to exchange the quick cuts for some open shots of the stage.3 points

Madonna is a brand. Madonna is a business. Part of that business is looking good. Just listen to yourselves when she comes out and she's looking better than you've seen in a while. You guys go nuts for it. Part of the appeal of a pop star is beauty. She was never gonna go the natural route like say Donna Delory. Her career would have ended long before, and with her career would have gone a whole section of the economy. So I dont agree when someone says you can't be a victim of ageism while simultaneously doing things to make you look better/younger. Every single person does things in their life to make themselves look better and more presentable. She also waxes her mustache Im sure. Should she just let it grow out because she should age naturally?3 points

Even if the movie is not a super box office success, it will create interest in the media interviewing her and garner more publicity for an accompanying album and tour. Yes, it will be great for us fans if she focuses on an album and releases it soon, but it will be likely ignored by the general public just like her recent albums. There is also the Covid problem in that she won’t be able to tour right away to promote the album. I really like the idea of her releasing an album inspired by the biopic but not an actual soundtrack. It would be cool if it has some 80’s synth pop and 90’s house or trip hop influences instead of being super contemporary, inspired by her looking back. Also hopefully by the time the movie is released, the Covid situation will have passed or died down significantly and she can tour to promote the movie and the album. It amazes me that people are always so negative before she has even done something. Give it a chance. Reminds me of my mom who was always a buzz killer and who would point out the million things that could go wrong every time I got excited about doing something. Yes most of her other movies didn’t do well, but they weren’t about topics that people were interested in like documenting her own life.3 points -

Also if she was aging "gracefully" the media and the world would've eat her alive 5x times as they always do. The problem and the hypocrite isn't Madonna for doing whatever she wants with her life. Check the DailyMail comments under her articles, there are people that literally search her images in HQ just to detect wrinkles in her face.3 points -

Madonna and ageism - where lies the problem?
Voguerista and one other reacted to RebelHeart for a topic
So I've been thinking about it for a while now... Madonna has been struggling with ageism for a long time and I agree - people pay too much attention to her age. Actually, many pop stars experience that now even at a younger age... Britney, Katy, etc. - they used to be so successful but as they become older, the popularity decreases. Madonna at least was still making hits in 2012 (well, I think GMAYL and GGW were relatively popular), or 2008 (4 Minutes was a hit for sure) - so she was 50 then. I think her age has been discussing more since RH era? And from that moment Madonna has addressed the issue many times. To certain extent I agree with her but isn't it like she is also contributing to that phenomenon? I don't want to go into details there coz I think she has every right to do with her body everything she wants to... but if you are so focused on looking and act young isn't it like showing that growing old is something bad and acceptable? I love her but to me it's a little bit hypocritical. It seems to me that she wants to fight ageism but at the same time she cannot accept the fact that you are not gonna stay young forever. How do you fight ageism then? What do you think? I'm so curious. And I don't want to start a fight here - I believe we all love Madonna here, so let's just discuss it without being rude. ;)2 points -

She managed to stay "relevant" and successful a lot longer than any other pop star whilest being called old. I do not see any woman that will be able to be as successful as she was between her 40's until her 50's, maybe only Beyoncé. But I do think that the quality of her work and her label/team doing all the work (that was not perfect, but was enough) has a lot to do with it. I don't think her "being old" is the only, or even primarily, reason for her decline in the zeitgeist.2 points -

I do absolutely think she is a victim of ageism but I also think that’s in part because she’s become something of a cliche in her old age so it’s easy for people to attack her because of her age.2 points -

No one struggles with ageism at the age of 30-40 anymore, she was the one struggling with ageism at her 30s. The ageist comments didn't start at the 2010s or during Rebel Heart, they were happening since the 90s.2 points -

I'm afraid you're confused, the 4m57 is the lp cut, the Everybody edit is a 3m58 chopped up edit from the extended mix. https://www.discogs.com/Madonna-Everybody/release/2731237 I've listened to them so many times, I can assure you that the version featured on the cd singles collection is the LP version fading early, no Prince guitar on it... On the contrary, the 3''cd single in snap pack contains the 7'' version with guitars and all... I've read somewhere that there were two different editions of this snap pack, one containing the 7'' version with Prince guitar parts, the other the LP cut fade, which may explain with the Japanese cd singles collection features the LP fade... Can someone with better knowledge can clarify this???...2 points -
