  1. Hi everyone ! Since we'll soon be celebrating the 40th anniversary of Madonna's career (!!), and due to popular demand, I'll organize a megarate for every single Madonna album. Let's now see how the tracks from the True Blue era compete with each other. As requested by most users who participated in other games, non-album tracks from the same era will also be included. Rules: - Make sure to know all the songs included in the competition. - Rate each song from 1 to 10. You are allowed to give the same rate to multiple songs. - Decimals are allowed only up to the hundredth (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED WHEN YOU CAN IN ORDER TO AVOID TIES). - You are allowed to give one 0 and one 11 (OPTIONAL). - Send your rates to me by personal messenger before January 18th, NOT in the thread. Results: #1 - 9,45 - Open Your Heart #2 - 9,44 - Live to Tell #3 - 9,41 - Papa Don't Preach #4 - 9,34 - La Isla Bonita #5 - 8,51 - True Blue #6 - 8,41 - Who's That Girl #7 - 8,19 - Causing a Commotion #8 - 8,01 - The Look of Love #9 - 7,94 - Where's the Party #10 - 7,30 - Spotlight #11 - 7,15 - White Heat #12 - 5,72 - Can't Stop #13 - 4,81 - Love Makes the World Go Round #14 - 4,74 - Jimmy Jimmy #15 - 4,03 - Santa Baby Good luck to everyone !

  2. Her first concept album. I have a theory that Like A Virgin was too actually but that's deep and for another time. The Rebel With A Cause. The 50's imagery. The leather jacket, The first real lean into her Italian Heritage. White Heat, Jimmy Jimmy and True Blue being the tracks that themed that record along with the Papa video imagery. Those blockbuster singles two of which having profound message. Flawless artwork for album and singles, Incredible videos for ALL of the singles which we previously hadn't had. Adult contemporary Madonna and her first forays into club dance music with the Open Your Heart 12" remix. La Isla being her most lasting and defining hit. The Poison Penns the Michael Jackson rivalry, her first real save the world anthem performed at Live Aid in Love Makes The World Go Round. Her first fully delivered era really. What's not to love? It's a perfect time capsule of the time and if you're viewing it through a Madonna 2022 lens or even just a 90's lens it's not gonna stack up to later projects. But as a stepping stone for the time. It was flawless. Remember her fans were largely between 10 and 15 yrs old at this time and this was 1986. None of them wanted a Kate Bush sounding art piece. This was primetime Saturday Night popcorn and heavy petting 50's teenage rebellion where idealistic love, bad boys, partying, acting out, teenage pregnancy , unrequited love and summer holiday romances were the subject matter ......and the world was all the better for it. Get into it

  3. I know that the Like a Virgin era megarate is still going on, but I'll be away for two weeks between the end of January and early February, so I didn't want to make you wait too long for the True Blue era Results Show. So you can already begin to vote now for the True Blue era if you want. In the meantime, the Results Show of the Like a Virgin era will happen on January 7th. 4. The singles are legendary, the album tracks not so much, unlike Like a prayer that has solid album tracks.

  5. I think that the only way to understand what an album really means and why it's considered good or not is living at the time the album was released. Is like saying after watching a science-fiction movie from 1950 "That's an overrated movie. The one premiered two months ago has much better special effects". "True blue" (and her other albums) are big not just for the songs. You can like them or not but you have to understand the album as an album made in 1986. You have to see what other artists were releasing albums and what kind of videos were made. You have to see which other women were in music at the time and what were they doing and most of all you have to understand how was life at that time. The way people thought, how they lived, what kind of access did they have to the information and the way of listening music, news and things like that. A lot of people say "Jimmy, Jimmy" and "Love makes the world go round" are just fillers, or bad songs or... But in 1986 they were funny songs and nice to listen and much better than lots of the songs that were playing on the radios. Madonna was big in 1986 and what made her big is that in 2022 some see "True blue" as an overrated album but in 1986 was one of the best albums ever made. I can understand that today people can see it as dated but that's because music evolved and now artist don't make music that way... But with all the 80's revivals we see today I only can say... "All of them are nice, but they are far away of having a glorious production like songs like "Papa don't preach", "Open your heart", "White heat"... or even "Love makes the world god round". Is overrated "True blue" as an album? For me the answer is a big No. The problem is that it misunderstood for judge it just like an album instead of judge it as a whole.

  6. I won’t have any bashing of this album except that Jimmy Jimmy is terrible so you bitches can calm down when you say it’s overrated- otherwise you might aswell say all her albums are overrated it’s the album that made her a superstar- the images, videos , remixes etc so how can it be overrated? If it wasn’t she wouldn’t be the legend she became

    Your Opinion on True Blue

First album I heard, first album I bought, it stays dear to my hear. Tell me which album has a better collection of 5 top class singles. Live to tell is one of the most mature Madonna songs. Papa and Open are Madonna at her best: provocative but with meaning, with a great sound and a great video which really deserve to be called art. With La isla bonita she was ahead of that time. I personally like Jimmy Jimmy because it reminds me of someone I used to know. Love makes the world go round is cheesy but an acceptable closer in the spirit of the Live Aid.

    Your Opinion on True Blue

Essential, iconic and a 80s blockbuster. But terribly overrated at the same time, in my opinion. It's far from perfect and doesn't have the layers and little things to keep discovering with time that most of her other albums have. It's Madonna playing the pop game and achieving commercial perfection, but without her usual edge (except for "Live To Tell"). Also, the mid 80s production doesn't help much - but this happens with all 1986-1988 pop albums, to be honest, most of them sound terribly dated today. I don't know, I guess you had to experience that era in real time to understand how big it was, maybe?

  10. To have an opinion other than enthusiastic on the first 3 albums of Madonna is absolutely incomprehensible to me ... as a fan from the beginning I find it even rather funny.........Imagine worshiping Madonna and leaving her with The Virgin Tour to see her reappear with Live To Tell ..... no you can't unless you experienced it back then

  14. The songs are undeniable but White Heat, Jimmy, and LMTWGR can take a walk. If you replace them with Causing a Commotion, The Look of Love, and Who's that Girl it would be absolutely majestic.

  15. One of the all time greatest pop records of all time. One of the all time greatest Madonna records of all time. Anyone that disagrees is not a real fan.

  16. I fully agree with every single word. This record marks a fundamental step in her career. Iconic singles and videos. Weak songs: JJ and LMTWGR. Highlight: Live to tell, to date one of her best ballads.

    Your Opinion on True Blue

The whole world loved her. She was everywhere (radios, TVs, News...) It was a crazy era (in the good way).

  18. voted! I'm a bit surprised how underwhelmed I was listening to this record now, musically it's very thin, a few non singles excluded. Though Into The Groove is and will always be pop perfection, and my favorite Madonna song as a kid, Stay also still sounds lush!

    Madonna's voice?

The best live vocal I ever heard from her was "You'll See" from DWT. It kills me there is no soundboard recording of it. She started to pronounce her R's really hard from '98 on.

  20. She still sounded really good on the Drowned World Tour because the effects of her Evita vocal training had not worn off yet. By the time we get to the end of Sticky and Sweet her voice is insufferably awful and it has not really recovered fully since. She sounded terrible on Eurovision as well and despite what some people claim, there is so danmm way she is singing live all the time on the Madame X Tour. If we judge her voice on her most recent vocal performance which is Harlem, I think we can say she still sounds pretty bad and needs to take some lessons again.

    Madonna's voice?

She is an awesome singer with the best voice - until Mirwais killed it.

  23. I wouldn’t say the public started to hate her but the uk press started to to really turn on her around Who’s That Girl Era. It was the first time I remember reading negative articles about her. The UK public never really fell out of love with her til the Guy divorce.

  24. This!! Everyone was shocked with Live To Tell... And every single and video-clip from True Blue was a global event. In my opinion it was her more successful era. With Like A Prayer the public began to hate her (too controversial for narrow minds)

  27. I love the album and era! What an amazing single run, the extended mixes, the videos, the photoshoots. As an album, I stop right after La Isla Bonita though, maybe I'll warm up to the final two tracks one day.

  30. The synths on this album are remarkable. It shares a lot of the DNA of Michael Jacksons Bad which was sonically brilliant. The same slap bass on Papa and some of the drums and synth sounds are pretty much identical. You can probably hear it most in Another Part Of Me. It's all so upfront and clearly audiable after the muddiness of a lot of Like A Virgin True Blue has the clarity of the debut turned up to eleven. The whole thing just pops off.

  32. Perfect one and an essential step on her carreer, but of course later works showed much more sides of her. But as for 1986, what she had to do and she did it perfectly. What a carreer this woman has had, lately sometimes I forgot it because of the Madame x era mess.

  33. Yeah this album is much worse than I remembered, her debut is much better, I will always love Into The Groove and Dress You up though.

    Madonna's voice?

Madonna came from the punk scene, don't forget that, like deby harry and many other singers that came from the punk are terrible in live, but those singers, sing with the soul, convey feelings. Did you hear susan's boyle cover of You'll See? Great voice, but lack of feelings. I prefer Madonna's voice, an imperfect voice but full of feelings and soul

  35. I genuinely wonder if she's a low key fan since she used an AMV as an interlude for DWT and then based the Jump MV look off Death Note

  38. You said other relevant artists like Taylor release dvds when the last time she did was 2011. What other "relevant" artists still release tour dvds?

  39. Shoo Bee Doo is no masterpiece or anything but I agree that giving it last place is just unfair, some people would just assume its a horrible song because of the title I suppose.

So, the photo with Prince is fake too, lol. I don't understand why people do those things.

  42. I've always been obsessed with the "extra lyrics" of her remixes and I can't find some of them but years ago I asked in other forum and the answer I had was "Gee whiz! Nobody’s paying any attention to me!" You were almost right!

    Madonna's voice?

Her voice has character rather than technical perfection which suits me fine. I'd rather listen to her "average" voice than a Mariah or Whitney. She struggles singing live for whatever reason but often can really pull it off. "Lucky Star" and "The Look Of Love" from Ciao Italia are really strong examples of her live voice. I think her voice was at it's finest around the Music era.

  44. She's one of my favorite female singers aside from Mariah and Whitney (thought not much of a fan of Whitney). Though her voice is not that hardcore like Mariah, Whitney, Donna Summer, Aretha, or Barbara, but we cannot deny that she also have a wonderful voice that soothes every people's soul. With the likes of Live To Tell, You'll See, Sooner or Later, Something To Remember, Love Don't Live Here Anymore, Oh Father, Promise To Try, In This Life, Take A Bow, and many to mention, she's a singer who seems like "she's not only singing but she's trying to tell a story". For live sessions and tours, her voice is still great, but not to overuse, not to always shout, and not to stress too much. Like what happened to her on Blond Ambition Tour where her voice sounds great during Japanese Tour Leg and earlier North American tour date but on the later and European, it gets worse or strained. Also, she must be aware of her voice if she can still hit a higher key on a song or to dodge it for good, because live shows do not always need to be sounded perfect as what we can also hear from studio versions. Lstly, as we ages, our internal organs including our vocal chords turn fragile so having her time to rest is a must. That's my opinion.
