  1. Hard candy was hated because the timbaland / timberlake style of music in 2008 was already stale and sounded dated.

  4. Hey. I hear some of your points but I also think you veer into making some points that don't add up 100% The Starrah thing yes I do remember that actually now you mention it. The Timbo Pharrell thing was largley because that moment musically had passed and was on the backfoot. Everybody loved Loose , Love Angel Music Baby & Future / Love/ Sex / Sounds no? and werent fans clammoring for Beat Goes On with Kanye to be a single big time as well as Timbalands classic sound of Devil Wouldn't Recognise you? Wasn't It Spanish Lesson, Incredible and Voices that were getting all the hate? Bedtime Stories is widely recognised as a fan favourite album that performed badly at the time because she was in a career lull. Many fans refer to the weakest track being the poppiest one. "Don't Stop". The same with Erotica. Waiting is an album highlight and although it's just an aside / bonus / remix etc "Did You Do It" is essentially giving the misogynistic male perspective which beautifully give another depth to her message. I also think Nikki Minaj got a lot of flack because she's hella problematic and featured on not one but three of Madonnas songs across two successive projects. Who else has had that? It was a case of ugh not again etc. GMAYL was not loved but Bitch was divisive more because of the Diplo / Sophie production, Nikki is fire on it IMO. Nas / Chance were also fire on the album as were Swae and Quavo on X. and for the record I think the Britney & Justin collabs are some of the worst of her career and I've never heard much to the contrary tbh, and the DUA remix was bloody slated by most including the Dua fans who thought it was an abomination and the Blessed Madonna got hate mail. Let's not rewrite that one. "There is a major difference between unapologetically black music (rap, hiphop, trap, r&b) and black music that is easily accessible by white people and often has its black history erased (motown, house, disco, poppy r&b) which happen to be the projects that anti-black Madonna fans tolerate the best." I mean...I don't wholly disagree tbh but we are coming from a pop / rock / dance background. Isn't "unapologetically black" problematic to the black community itself? What's black enough? Disco is queer / black / latinx protest music as much as hip-hop...just as hip-hop will often veer into party, drink, dance, get wild music. As is Jazz and Rock N Roll. I'm not blind to what you are saying and maybe Madonnas wanted these type of collaborations her whole career but Warner were just not into it. and yes anti-black Madonna fans do exist of course they do, I don't think anyone is denying that and it's correct to be mindful / aware of it. I just think there's more damage and ill feeling created on all sides when we specifically broad brushstroke over musical tastes with racism. Specifically when it's a fan base bought up on pop music by an artist we all know and love to be highly influenced by other cultures. Just some thoughts x

  8. I don’t think using Ray of Light the song is a great example to support that. Weve all heard the Nowells/Fitzgerald/Leonard/Babyface demos. It’s a lot. And lyrically she pours herself into them. Yes, we know she didn’t really write Ray of Light or Candy Perfume Girl. Swim came from a Susannah Melvoin demo which was just an early version of All Saints “Pure Shores.” All Madonna did was take the instrumental of the concept of water “swimming” to create Swim. But those are just 3 songs. There’s 11 others on that album. (and yes I know about Sky Fits Heaven and The Gap commercial, but we all find inspiration in the strangest of ways. It doesn’t make you a fraud)

  14. Her first solo performance was at Uncle Sam's Blues Club in Roslyn, Long Island in October 1981, before she was signed to Sire. Photographer George Dubose documented the show. George Dubose: I was contacted by John Phillips, the bouncer at Hurrah's who was sidelining as a radio promotions man, shopping Madonna's first demo to radio stations. He put me together with Camille, of Empire Management, Madonna's manager. Camille asked me to go to Uncle Sam's Blues, a club in Roslyn, Long Island and make live photographs of just the singer who was fronting a band called "The Breakfast Club". Just the singer, not the band. Hmmmm? There was this sexy, young woman wearing barely-concealing costumes of chamois skin and foxtails. She was oozing sexuality, but seemed shy or unsure of herself. I went back stage between sets to meet her. I asked her what her real name was. "Madonna." I offered her encouragement and wrote a short list of suggestions regarding her performance. I was trying to be supportive. When her manager, Camille, discovered the note, she was furious and ejected me from the dressing room, screaming, "How dare you speak to my artist!" I stayed in the club and shot the second set. I took the train back to Manhattan and never heard from Camille again. I referred Madonna to the promoters of Club NY and we saw her shows at the Underground, Danceteria and the Roxy, without a band. My negatives of Madonna's first gig sat in my files for 15 years before anyone had any interest in publishing them. I have since recouped my expenses and then some from my first meeting with Madonna. She first performed "Everybody" live at Danceteria as part of Haoui Montaug's No Entiendes cabaret revue on December 16, 1982. She performed it on TV for the first time on the show Dancin' on Air, which aired on January 9, 1983.

  15. Hmmm I disagree that most fans only want Madonna to work with white people. Nile Rogers, Stephen Bray, Pharell, Timbaland, Dallas Austin, Babyface, Starrah, Kanye, Missy, Lenny Kravitz are all people of colour who have produced lots of work for her over the decades. I've never really heard anyone calling out her work with these musicians before. I think the issue a certain portion of the fanbase has is Madonnas style has repeatedly emulated a very specific, dated and repetitive style of music that is based around loops, autotune, mumbling and features where M sounds like she's a guest on her own record. One of the most basic and boring incarnations of Hop-Hop ever in terms of sounds, emotion, clarity. It feels more like dress up than any of her former images which she's moved on pretty quickly from. There are so many other forms of alt rnb that I would die to see Madonna veer into. It's specifically modern hip-hop that just doesn't fit her very well as a woman in her 60's tbh. Plenty of RNB Hip Hop vibes throughout her work from 1990-1994 and that's some of Madonnas most beloved work. She just seems more infatuated with it in the last decade than she really ever has before. It's borders on culture vulture despite her worldly views. I think it's too easy to just broad stroke it as colour based racism even if when the language used by certain fans veers into racist tropes. Does that makes sense? It's more about Madonna not the artists she's working with which sometimes feel cynical and opportunistic which in itself is problematic.

  20. i think ray of light is one of the best albums ever not just her best album that box set that somebody designed from this page got me all excited as i believed it was real..its what it deserves but i bet we get a basic new edition

  21. Ray of Light is definitely a masterpiece but I have always thought that stuff about everything on it being super personal is kinda overblown. Ray of Light was ultimately just another of her reinventions, sometimes its very hard to know the real Madonna.
    1 point
  22. I was super surprised by how much of the music on Ray of Light was already done before Madonna even got involved. The writing/production credit on Ray of Light (the song) is really debatable, the song was already finished before Orbit even started working on the record.
    1 point
  23. I think is because with ROL she literally ransacked Orbit's catalogue and they made a whole album when that particular Orbit sound wasn't too commercial. It helped her to get the electronic baptism she wanted and for Orbit to get more recognition . The MDNA demos they are more generic EDM sounds that so many Djs and producers were doing at the time. I blame the same software (!) So the demos sound less exciting. But yeah she's good at curating and making her sound.

  24. Prince was constantly being seen in public and did more interviews than Madonna, especially in the 90s, so he was not isolated in his house all the time like you make it sound. His marriage with Mayte broke down because of the death of their son, music was always the first love of his life but he has always come across as a very sensible and articulate person with natural charm, for all Madonna's ramblings about trying to be a positive influence, he was a much better interviewer than her, seemed generally happy throughout his life and had a real knack for avoiding controversy and scandal, unlike MJ and Madonna. The real issue that prevented them becoming super close friends was that they lived very different lives and collaborating musically was hard because he was so much more dominant in that area and it would be hard for her to have any meaningful imput in a studio with him. Its interesting to me that Prince's instincts were correct regarding Love Song, he felt the track was unworkable and should just be disposed of yet Madonna fell in love with it and convinced him to work on it with her despite his reservations and it ended up being the worst track on LAP, Prince regarded Love Song as mediocre and he was correct. Michael Jackson on the other hand, created a fantasy world around him at Neverland and basically lived in total isolation during most of the 2000's, although I cant say I blame him for retreating from the public eye after all that controversy in the 90's he went through. It still bugs me he had to always be trashing Madonna all the time, especially since she generally seemed to like him

  26. Everyone knows by now that Madonna and MJ couldn't stand each other. They were simply too different, except for the fact that they are/were both control freaks. But MJ was quite stiff, sensitive, in some ways old fashioned (don't know what his stance on queer people was, did he ever make a public comment?). Madonna on the other hand is very extroverted, blunt and relaxed when it comes to things like sexuality. But I do believe that Madonna deeply regrets that they fell out of touch and didn't really make up before he died. Btw if there's one thing that I do find very disgusting about some black MJ, Janet, Whitney..etc fans is that they always downplay Madonna's influence and talent and I bet you guys it's simply because she is white (I'm biracial myself).

  30. You dont seem to understand do you? HER RECENT COLABORATIONS ARE HATED BECAUSE THEY SUCK!!!! NOT BECAUSE THE MUSICANS ARE BLACK, SHE HAS WORKED WITH BLACK ARTISTS IN THE PAST AND FANS LIKE THOSE, that goes for Crave also. Once she actually releases a quality collaboration I will like it. I dont want her to repeat Confessions, I want her to make fun music again. Not all the problems in her career lately can be placed on the shoulders of racism. She could collaborate with Ed Sheeran and the song would suck ballsack, Ed Sheeran is not black is he? I despise MDNA with a passion and that album is dance, the collaboration with Nicki Minaj is not even the worst track on that abomination. I dislike some of her 80s and 90's stuff also, does that mean I hate all white artists she has ever worked with? dont bother responding if your gonna repeat your same old stupid claim.
    1 point
  31. Danmm thats a long rant and your ignoring the basic fact that her collaborations suck and thats why they are hated, not because of the color of some guys skin. Hard Candy is held in contempt because its a mediocre record and that goes for Timberlake and his contribution. Fans dont hate Baby Face, Nile Rodgers or Lenny Kravitz now do they? is pretty easy to use the racism excuse to cover up for the fact that her collaborations suck that goes for black artists and non black artists. Madonna fans dont seem to hate Crave even though Swae Lee is a black rapper why? because the track is actually good.

  33. I have always wondered why they chose to work at a distance on Love Song, was it because they were both super busy in different parts of the world? either way, even if Love Song never came about Prince really added some magic with his guitar on Like a Prayer so the work they did was pretty fruitful. That opening riff he plays is one of the things that make the track.

  39. Prince and Madonna were very good friends, they reached out to each other several times and attended concerts of one another. 1985 also has all the clues that they might have even slept together at least once because the night that Madonna presents Prince with an award at the AMA's you can see her biting her lip and its obvious she was attracted to him, the next day, since neither of them attended the We Are the World sessions, Prince and Madonna were photographed together at dinner and then in a car driving, Prince sleeping with women he was working with was nothing new, the guy got a hell of a lot of action in the 80s although he was always discreet. He designed the outfit that she wore for her live aid appearance and even if they grew more distant in the 90's because of Princes battle with his record label, they obviously renewed their friendship in the 2000s. Prince and Madonna will always be my favorite artists and I am glad they they seemed to care for one another.

  44. What the Pet Shop Boys said was Warner originally did approach them, but then Warner changed their mind and wanted her to go down the R&B route to do better in the American market, and rescinded their support. So it’s not true that Warner was pushing her to work with the Pet Shop Boys and she alone was the one that said no. I have never seen the big fuss about the Pet Shop Boys. I like one or two songs, but a lot of their songs sound the same, it gets boring after awhile.
