  2. It's a bittersweet one for me. I like(d) it but it's not that good. Any movie following "Evita" would have been a difficult one cause she was great in "Evita" and it was a big movie. The idea of "The Next Best Thing" was good and different and I understand why she was attracted to the script. It was also a little bit ahead of its time, probably it would have been received better today. Mainstream critics were never going to accept those kind of themes back then. But the movie didn't work in the end, I always found the change from light comedy to heavy court drama a little bit too much. Also, the movie was marketed as a romantic comedy, so that change was even more drastic when you saw it. I think she was good in it, actually, it was peak of "Cool Madonna", her chemistry with Rupert Everett was great and, while not perfect acting, it's not one of her worst: I'm still trying to understand the retouching on the movie poster though: I love the soundtrack! One of the best things from this project. And only for this GEM it was all worth it:

  5. If Madonna released Into the Groove, Live to Tell, Like a Prayer, Take a Bow or Hung Up today, they would be shreded to bits for an extra click here or there, some mixing anomaly, piss poor marketing, a lack of inspiration, weak vocals, her hairdo or "hairdon't", her ass, her waistline, her grilz, her age, being too political and not being fun enough, her social media accounts, having a life outside of her job... etc etc etc. Maybe the true issue at hand is that Madonna has evolved over and over and many of her fans have not. She is the Queen of reinvention. I do not understand the obsession with dragging down everything that she does on a fan blog site. It is rather tiresome and mundane. Madonna has inspired and entertained me for decades and each era has spoke to me on a unique level. She has never stopped, even when it made total sense to do so to the average person. But here we are... Madonna ushered us through many trials and tribulations and we are now making fun of her efforts. Some of us are attempting to rewrite history and pretend that none of it mattered. She was, is and will continue to be a freedom fighter. This one human being stood up for those who could not in a time when most would not. We are simultaneously lamenting the past, present and future and forgetting her amazing discography and body of work, her contribution and her talents. We need to lay off of the micro-aggressions and the outright assaults on her person and embrace her light while we still have it. Forty years on and she "still melts my heart". She will not provide sanctuary forever. I remind you that the world will one day miss her light so keep your meltdowns to a minimum and enjoy the journey a bit more.

  6. Hi everyone ! Since we'll soon be celebrating the 40th anniversary of Madonna's career (!!), and due to popular demand, I'll organize a megarate for every single Madonna album. Let's now see how the tracks from the Rebel Heart era compete with each other. As requested by most users who participated in other games, non-album tracks from the corresponding era will also be included. Rules: - Make sure to know all the songs included in the competition. - Rate each song from 1 to 10. You are allowed to give the same rate to multiple songs. - Decimals are allowed only up to the hundredth (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED WHEN YOU CAN IN ORDER TO AVOID TIES). - You are allowed to give one 0 and one 11 (OPTIONAL). - Send your rates to me by personal messenger before August 11th, NOT in the thread. Results: #1 - 8,53 - Ghosttown #2 - 8,28 - Living for Love #3 - 8,05 - Rebel Heart #4 - 7,97 - Devil Pray #5 - 7,67 - HeartBreakCity #6 - 7,61 - Wash All Over Me #7 - 7,25 - Messiah #8 - 7,17 - Inside Out #9 - 7,01 - Best Night #10 - 6,94 - Joan of Arc #11 - 6,89 - Addicted #12 - 6,88 - Iconic #13 - 6,87 - Hold Tight #14 - 6,66 - Unapologetic Bitch #15 - 6,54 - Holy Water #16 - 6,37 - Illuminati #17 - 6,30 - Bitch I'm Madonna #18 - 6,25 - Borrowed Time #19 - 6,17 - Beautiful Scars #20 - 6,12 - Body Shop #21 - 6,07 - Veni Vidi Vici #22 - 5,37 - S.E.X. #23 - 4,79 - Graffiti Heart #24 - 2,93 - Auto-Tune Baby Good luck to everyone!

    New Variety Interview

Madonna became close with the man she calls her “ride or die” in the same way that most people bond: through late nights out, long conversations — and no small amount of mischief. In an interview with Variety, the pop icon opens up about her unconventional relationship with Variety’s 2022 Music Mogul of the Year Guy Oseary, that extends from partner-in-crime, at least in their early days in Miami, to trusted business partner and source of “calm wisdom.” “I was always the adventurous, crazy one,” Madonna says. “As soon as Guy would get a little look of fear in his eyes, I’d think it was a good idea. I would use him as a weathervane.” However, that dynamic only crystallized over time. When the hitmaker first met Oseary, just 18 at the time, they were both unapologetic troublemakers. “As the years went by, he took on a more of a parental role,” Madonna reveals. Oseary urged the notorious workaholic to rest more and spend wisely. Occasionally, Madonna heeded his advice. More often than not, she remained unswayed — such as the time Oseary suggested the superstar tone down on the elaborate staging of her tours. “He would try to get me to do less production because then I would have less overhead and make more money,” Madonna says. “He was always the voice of reason.” While Oseary is now “the old man in the house in Benedict Canyon” according to his most famous charge, Madonna’s fearlessness has rubbed off on him in perhaps unexpected ways. Like his forays into the world of cryptocurrency and NFTs. “He’s always been the man behind the artist taking the risk,” she says. “Now he’s taking risks. He reminds me on a regular basis that he’s essentially invested all this money in the crypto world.” (Amusingly, their close bond didn’t guarantee Madonna the NFT ape she wanted from the Oseary-repped Bored Ape Yacht Club. ) As Oseary settled down, started a family, and rose in prominence as a manager, producer and investor, Madonna has learned, somewhat begrudgingly, to share her dear friend. “I’m not happy sharing him with apes. Cryptocurrency, Ethereum, U2, Anthony Kiedis, his four children and wife,” she jokes. “Why did all these people have to show up?” Read on for more from the endlessly quotable multi-hyphenate. How has Guy evolved over the years? He’s changed a lot since I met him. When I met Guy, he was 18 years old. My first reaction to him was that he had a lot of opinions. But then, as I got to know him, I realized that he had good taste in music and recognized talent. We just became friends. I would get his advice about people I was dating and he was always going after supermodels that were breaking his heart. In business, was he good cop to your bad cop? More or less. I was always the adventurous, crazy one. As soon as Guy would get a little look of fear in his eyes, I’d think it was a good idea. I would use him as a weathervane. But that didn’t happen right away. We were on even ground and then, as the years went by, he took on a more of a parental role. He was always very practical. When I would go on tour, he would try to get me to do less production because then I would have less overhead and make more money. He was always the voice of reason and I was the mischievous one pushing the envelope. Guy says that your risk taking rubbed off on him as a businessman. He’s always been the man behind the artist taking the risk. Now he’s taking risks. He reminds me on a regular basis that he’s essentially invested all this money in the crypto world. Which brings us to Bored Ape #3756. I was so pissed off that I didn’t get the one I wanted. Once I get my mind around something then that’s what I’m going to have. But I learned quickly that wanting 32 musicians on stage in a small theater is not the same as wanting an ape with a leather motorcycle cap and multicolored teeth. That’s the one you wanted? Yeah and I didn’t get it. Even though I was told that it was inspired by me, and modeled after me. It was bought by a woman who is a fan of mine. I was like, “She should just sell it to me!” She was gonna sell it to me, but it was way, way too expensive. I can’t afford my own ape. Do you share everything with Guy? To a point. Once he got married, he created his own universe. Obviously, I had him all to myself and now I have to share him with his wife, which really pisses me off. I’m kidding! Before that a lot of pretty girls came and went — he’s gonna kill me for saying all of this — but then he settled down with a really nice girl. I was like, “God dammit. Now I have competition!” And then he started managing other artists, which really pushed me over the edge. You have an unconventional relationship. Like I said, before it was just me and Guy. We did everything together. I remember the tour where he went, “I can’t do this anymore.” It was for MDNA. I never settled down in a conventional way. I have a very unconventional family. I call myself a citizen of the world and my family unit moves with me. He couldn’t be on the road all the time? It probably had to do with him wanting to grow a business, but also having a family. Now he’s the old man in the house in Benedict Canyon. Is that where he lives? One of those canyons. I’ve only been to his house 3,000 times. But he has a lot of practical, calm wisdom that I do not have, so we still have a good dynamic. It’s just shifted. What are your plans for music going forward? I’m just looking for interesting, fun ways to rerelease my catalog and introduce my music to a new generation. I’m focused on that and I’ve been writing a screenplay for my film for the last couple of years. The whole thing with “Frozen” was so fun, but I woke up one day and went, “I’m sick of living in the past!” I want to go on tour again, I’m a creature of the stage. That is my happy place. Would you miss Guy on tour? I’m always happy to see him. In my opinion, he doesn’t come around enough. I wish he would come around more. I’m not happy sharing him with apes. crypto currency, Ethereum, U2, Anthony Kiedis, his four children and wife. Why did all these people have to show up? Guy says you shot down any consideration of selling your song catalog. Why? Because they’re my songs. Ownership is everything isn’t it? I mean, that’s why he’s buying apes. Where are you at with the biopic? I have a very long script that is really hard for me to make shorter. I’ve been whittling away at it, but it’s like hacking off my limbs. Why did you decide to make the film? I’ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film. It was also a preemptive strike because a lot of people were trying to make movies about me. Mostly misogynistic men. So I put my foot in the door and said, “No one’s going to tell my story, but me.”

  8. Ok, so I became a fan during her peak with ROL and later the Music album, so naturally I went to see TNBT to the cinema when it was premiered and never got to see it again till yesterday. Things that went through my mind, last night: The photography or the lighting or both are strange. The movie is not very exciting or good but it is watchable and not so bad as they say. Madonna looked gorgeus for some parts, specially with her ROL hair when the movie starts, but strange in other parts, why? And definitively like a experienced woman, which is not bad at all, but you can tell in order to look so youthful for the next 20 years she must have had A LOT of things done. Still, even though I don´t think her acting was so bad as they often say, it´s like it´s difficult seeing her a the girl next door in the movie, too much superstar power? The music it is pretty good. She never fails with songs for movie, she is incredibly talented for this. How do you see this one currently?

  10. Not true, the info from the server saying MATERIAL GWRLLLLL releases tomorrow has been posted on Madonna Nation and on this forum, before Drownedmadonna's post. Can confirm the track is being considered for immediate release but so far it has been delayed more than one time (not just today/tomorrow). Patience is a virtue.

    New Variety Interview

as usual, an interview with her means more than thousand words. there are many interesting points, starting from her relationship with Guy O., which seems it got deteriorated in these last 13 years, basically when he negotiated that monster contract that almost killed all the magic in her. I didn't know he is friend with the Live Nation CEO, but maybe this explains why she joined them. Since she hasn't missed any occasion to kindly remind us how bad that choice was, at the point she admitted she never wanted to make neither MDNA nor Rebel Heart, I wonder if she'll flank him with another person who will dedicate himself, body and soul, to her, as Guy did the in first 20 years, following her step by step in everything and acting as a good creative advisor after all, because it was him who phoned Orbit and submitted to her the tape with the 'Production' demos by Mirwaïs. From her words, it's clear she still needs someone who acts like 'the voice of reason' and guides her, confronts with her and gives the proper shape to her ideas: more a wise friend than a simple financial consultant. despite the age gap, Guy O. acted as a parental figure for her, just as Freddy and Liz did. In these 15 years everything fucked up not because of Guy, but beacause of Guy's absence, imo: since when he rightly decided to focus more on his own business and his life, she felt descarded by him and we all know she works well only when she's fully committed, thing she hasn't been lately because she chose her family over her career (nothing to say against it), and the small group of trusted people (always the same ones, funny isn't it?) she works with are fully focused on her, her requests, her ideas. Paradoxally, this way of working is quite démodé and it's obvious she feels like a fish out of water right now, where you can easily make an album even without seeing the producer in person. Speaking for myelf, reading she's intrigued by how TikTok or internet in general let people promote and manipulate music cracks me up: it's true her attempts of coping with technology are a bit cringy and embarrassing sometimes, but I'm very fascinated that a woman in her 60s still wants to try to understand how we, gen Z, handle our relationships with music and visual arts. bracket closed. About the rest, I'm quite curious to see her next moves and I have the feeling everything will be totally different from what we've seen so far.

  20. I really love Time stood still and it has a special place in my heart, but at that time, after Beautiful Stranger and American Pie I think they wanted the public to be hungry for new songs cause she was already working on Music, so I suppose she had to be out of the spotlight for a while in order to do a proper comeback with Music. Oh, it worked brilliantly. What an era for being a fan, Music, the single and the recocord, came and were so strange yet fasciniting and well done and beauitufl and it did amazing on the charts. Most of pop artist would have explote more of the Orbit sound and a ROL 2, but not out girl, who found the way of reinventing herself one more time while staying at the top. I miss that Madonna so much.

    New Variety Interview

https://www.drownedmadonna.com/2019/06/25/the-mojo-interview-with-madonna-one-of-her-best-ever-she-explains-everything/ How do you know it’s time to make an album? Is it like a spider sense? Or are there suddenly a load of ideas, and you have to use them or lose them? "Sometimes that happens. But it has definitely not happened in the last… three records. Honestly, the last couple of albums, I’ve made them reluctantly. Both times I was trying to do something else – to get a film made. That happened on this record too. I moved to Lisbon because I wanted my son [David Banda] to be able to attend a soccer academy, and I was trying to raise money for a film, and then I got bored waiting and then l ended up making a record. So it just kind of happened. It wasn’t like a.. burning thing that I had. But then other times, I did have lots of ideas stirring inside of me and I did have a burning desire". So which were the albums that just had to be made? "Ray Of Light. That would be one. Like A Prayer. But my life was simpler then. Like A Prayer – I was married to Sean [Penn]. I had no children and my life was very simple. Ray Of Light, I had my daughter, but again, I didn’t have such a complicated life. Now my life is complicated". She also complained about the creative process of her Interscope albums on Instagram “Remember when I made records with other artists from beginning to end and I was allowed to be a visionary and not have to go to song writing camps where No one can sit still for more than 15 minutes.” These comments echo an interview Madonna did with Billboard around the time of her 2014 disc Rebel Heart, where she complained about “a lot of cooks in the kitchen.” She said it was “very, very, very, very hard” to collaborate with “young DJs who never can stay in one city for more than five days.” “It’s a chaotic way to work…there’s a lot of confusion,” she complained, noting that she’d “start things with one group of people, and then I’d start something with somebody else, and then they’d have to leave…and the other person would come back.”

  24. I love the thought behind this thread. For me, she has mostly been a sort of mother figure, who has guided me through dancing, religious views, sexuality, spirituality and self expression. For me, her presence will always be connected to my own personal journey, it's visceral. And in my own journey, I somehow recognise her own journey which generally leads me to accepting her creative decisions whether I like them or not. The weight of what she has given me or helped me give myself on the 'weighing scales of life' far outweighs what bugs me about her or what works I dislike. With that context in mind, it can be difficult sometimes to discuss her career with people who perhaps don't have an emotional trajectory with her, or who view things she did or said in the 80s with a modern lens or with flippancy, or who only view her as being her current social media persona. At this point, I also understand that opinions about her tend to evolve. Erotica, American Life, Hard Candy had people slamming her for poor creative decisions but which are now seen as vital steps in her overall tapestry. Once the noise surrounding them died down, they were heard differently. People experience her in their own ways I guess...

  26. I don't know what one thing has to do with the other, but well, answering your question, the answer is NO, because Dua Lipa is a world famous artist as well as beautiful and talented, so the expectation for the success of this remix was positive and as I repeat, in this song Material Gworlll Madonna hardly appears while Saucy occupies almost all the space of the song. Yes, I know that this song is originally by Saucy Santana but I expected the same thing to happen as with the Levitating remix where Madonna practically took over the entire song leaving Dua Lipa as a guest singing just one verse. Something understandable because what artist would not want to have the privilege of having Madonna participating in one of their songs, a sign of humility on the part of Dua Lipa to accept taking a back seat in this remix giving Madonna more participation, something that does not happen with Saucy in Material Gworll where apparently his uncontrolled appetite for fame and exposure prevented him from allowing Madonna to have more participation in the song. Saucy should have gone to the background in the song (as happened with Dua Lipa), that would have made this artist have more respect from the fans but apparently Saucy will think that he/she is doing Madonna a favor by leaving that she participates in her/his song, Saucy will surely think that thanks to her Madonna will have relevance in the young public and thus reach the top of the charts. Saucy is totally wrong.

  32. I was 15 when this came out and went to see it on opening night in NYC. Completely sold out crowd full of mostly gay men. I don't think I've ever had that experience with a movie since but I never went to see any Lady Gaga movies and I imagine its the same case there. This movie bothers me because the first half is actually cute and like others here have said a bit ahead of its time. And then it tries to become this serious courtroom drama. Like give me aliens, turn Madonna into an axe murderer, something, anything but this! The "Sex & The City" scenes with M and her girlfriends who have no chemistry. You have Lynn Redgrave and do nothing with her. "American Pie" acapella at the funeral...Esther, please! PLEASE, ESTHER! And that movie poster. Who's hair is that? Why did they remove her neck? I love the soundtrack. TSS is easily one of her most beautiful songs ever. I actually like American Pie and it's videos. The JB mix is one of her best remixes ever. Shame it's still not officially released. Groove Armada "If Everybody Looked The Same" and Olive "I'm Not In Love" and Beth Orton "Stars All Seem To Weep" stayed on repeat. Oh and she looked absolutely gorgeous in the black and white evening dress.

  33. Tell what you want about M's recent works, but Revel Heart is a true gem in her catalogue. It's got indeed too many songs, it's true, but it has some of her very best songwriting and concept, and it was going to be a much more elaborate and polish project if it wasn't for the leaks.

I'd be happy to see her touring again. Yet I don't know if I would spend so much money like I did for 4 MXT shows. I think she needs a new formula and some preparation. A greatest hits tour is highly possible at this point. But if she gets easily bored by the past, why doesn't she work on a new album?

  39. I agree with @stefo it's an an unlucky album but full of great songwriting. It was hard to vote because for many songs the demos are better than the final version. So, for instance, i had to give lower marks to Joan of Arc and Beautiful scars, I would have given 9 to both demos! Only three songs are under 6/10 imo. No 0 this time.
