  3. The text on the wall for those interested. SEX BY MADONNA PHOTOGRAPHED BY STEVEN MEISEL CURATED BY ANTHONY VACCARELLO ON ANTHONY VACCARELLO'S INITIATIVE, SAINT LAURENT IS REISSUING MADONNA'S SEX BOOK, THIRTY YEARS AFTER ITS FIRST PUBLICATION. TO MARK THIS OCCASION, THE HOUSE INVITES VISITORS TO WANDER FREELY THROUGH THE WORLD OF THE ICONIC BOOK, BROUGHT TO LIFE WITH PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN FROM IT. CONCEIVED BY MADONNA, PHOTOGRAPHED BY STEVEN MEISEL AND ART- DIRECTED BY FABIEN BARON, SEXWAS AN INSTANT HIT WHEN IT WAS PUBLISHED IN 1992. ALREADY AT THE HEIGHT OF HER WORLDWIDE POPULARITY, MADONNA SIMULTANEOUSLY RELEASED HER NEW ALBUM "EROTICA" AND THE SHOCKING BOOK, UNPRECEDENTED IN THE WORLD OF PUBLISHING AND THE MUSIC INDUSTRY PACKAGED IN A THICK SILVERY-BLUE CELLOPHANE WRAPPER THAT MADE IT LOOK LIKE A HIGH-END ADULT MAGAZINE, THE BOOK HIT THE SCENE AS THE LATEST MARKETING COUP FROM A STAR IN TOTAL CONTROL OF HER OWN PUBLIC IMAGE, WHICH WAS UNHEARD OF AT THAT TIME. BEHIND THE PROVOCATIVE WRAPPING, READERS DISCOVERED WHAT ONLY FEW EXPECTED FROM A MAINSTREAM POPICON. ONCE AGAIN, MADONNA PUSHEDTHE ENVELOPE, SUBVERTED THE CODES OF THE CREATIVE ESTA BLISHMENT, AND BECAME THE UNEQUIVOCAL AMBASSADOR OF 1990'S UNDERGROUND CULTURE. UPON ITS RELEASE, MADONNA AND MEISEL'S SEX DEFIED ITS TIME AND BECAME AS MUCH A MARKER AS IT WAS A RE-VELATION. THE BOOK'S POWER CONTINUES TO BE FELT SEX REVISITS AN AVANT-GARDE AND PROVOCATIVE PUNK AESTHETIC, WHILE PRESENTING A FOCUSED CREATIVE VISION THAT STANDS THE TEST OF TIME. THIRTY YEARS AGO, THE BOOK'S SENSATIONAL MARKETING MADE IT EASY TO MISS THE BREADTH OF ITS IDEOLOGICAL AND AESTHETIC AMBITION. TO-DAY, WE CAN APPRECIATE ALL OF THE BOOKS REFERENCES: FROM THE LUSH SCENES OF LUCHINO VISCONTIS •THE DAMNED* THROUGH THE NUDIST UTOPIA OF THE INTERWAR PERIOD TO THE TRANSGRESSIVE PORTRAITS OF ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE AND THE LUSTFUL IMAGES OF HELMUT NEWTON; FROMTHE OPEN SPIRIT OF FANZINES TO THE CAMP ETHOS OF ANDY WARHOL'S SUPERSTARS. MADONNA WROTE SEX WITH THE NAME "MISTRESS DITA", IN HOMAGE TO THE GERMAN ACTRESS DITA PARLO, WHO MADE HER MARK ON THE EXPRESSIONIST CINEMA OF 1930'S GERMANY, WITH THE PSEUDONYM, MADONNA INTENDED TO CREATE AN ALTER EGO INHABITING THIS ULTRA-SEXUAL UNIVERSE, IN THE VEIN OF MARCEL DUCHAMP'S FROSE SELAWY. LIKE CINDY SHERMAN, WHO BLURS BOUNDARIES AND GENRES BY PUTTING HERSELF IN THE PICTURE, MADONNA DEMYSTIFIES FANTASIES AND EM BODIES DESIRES THAT, AT THE TIME, WERE DEEMED BARELY ACCEPTABLE BY SOCIETY. IT IS FASCINATING TO SEE HOW SEX ALIGNS WITH CONCERNS CENTRAL TO OUR TIME AND ITS COUNTERPOINT MOVEMENTS WHERE WHAT WAS HIDDEN BECOMES TRANSPARENT, TRANS. GRESSION BECOMES THE NORM. PROVOGATION BECOMES AFFIRMATION AND ELITISM IS REPLAGED WITH INCLUSMITY. THE EVOLUTION OFVALUES ALLOWS US TO GRASP THE FULLIRONY AND POWER OF THIS WORK, WHOSE IMAGES - UNDERAPPRECIATED AT THE TIME BECAUSE OF THEIR PROVOCATIVE NATURE FIND A NEW RESONANGE IN A CURRENT CONTEXT, WHILE THE DEBATE AROUND QUESTIONS OF GENDER AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION HAS SHIFTED, THE UNDETERRED INFLUENCE OF MADONNA'S BOOK REMAINS UNIVERSAL AND UNIQUE. SEX ECHOES OUR CHANGING SOCIETY AND QUESTIONS THE WAY WE LOOK AT OUR FANTASIES, DICTATED BY MEN IN THE PAST THREE DECADES LATER WE CELEBRATE WOMEN'S EMANCIPATION AND SELF-AFFIRMATION WITH A RENEWED DEFINITION OF SEXUAL FREEDOM.

  5. Then you shouldn’t be excited about the campaign in general. Since it’s about reissues not previously unreleased material.

  6. The partnership has already yielded a massive treasure chest of video upgrades, major remix streaming additions, Who's that Girl Super Mix on vinyl, Everybody 40 on vinyl, a massive #1's compilation, digital, Like a Prayer 30, and digital True Blue 35. M has also released numerous reimagined classics such as Frozen, Material Gworrrl, and Vogue. There is definitely more to come. I believe that all of the looks that she has been serving are gonna be used for rereleased expanded albums too. There is just too much effort and expense to waste.

  7. Have often thought about this. Maybe we should alert her to the fact, she's probably forgotten. Fast forward to 2025, the new biopic "Gambler" - how one sassy chick from the streets of Detroit risked it all to conquer the world.

  8. Singing Holiday in glasgow acapella with 14,300 people 5 days before christmas at the last european show of rebel heart tour was iconic for me

  9. I was at the Detroit show for the Blond Ambition Tour when we sang Happy Birthday to her dad which ended up in Truth or Dare. I was also at the first US show in Philadelphia for DWT where she surprised everyone with You'll See for the first time. Also attended MDNA in Miami night 2 which had footage on the Blu-ray.

  10. I was looking for the TV program of the day my boyfriend was born just to tease him, turns out there's a site dedicated to it where someone retranscribed tv programs of the past from tv magazines. I searched for Madonna and bam ! New tv appearance i did not know about. We know about Hip Hop, Platine 45, Passeport pour la forme and Les Enfants du Rock, all recorded in june 1984 and broadcast around the same time and july. BUT turns out she did a tv appearance in France in january 1984 too. The tv show, Jack Spot, was a short lived one presented by Plastic Bertrand (the "Ca Plane Pour Moi" singer) it's around the same time she did The Tube in England (january 1984) so she was indeed in Europe at that time AND if i remember corretly, Christopher talks about it in his book as a miserable experience where they shot the performance inside an empty swimming pool.

  16. It’s weird actually cause Gambler has sole Madonna writing credit so you think she’d be wheeling it out regularly for the coin.

  17. I was at one of the shows in London that was filmed for The Confessions Tour (15 August), and that tour is widely considered iconic, so maybe I have been by default? Other than that, no.

  18. It would make more sense to add extended and instrumental mixes "Gambler" (LP version) – 3:54 "Gambler" (extended dance mix) – 5:34 "Gambler" (instrumental remix) – 3:55

  19. If they do release Gambler on streaming, it gives me hope that more obscure singles and tracks will see a release at some point.

  20. I guess we have different expectations, and that’s fair. For me upgraded videos, vinyls, already available remixes and mostly unimpressive renditions of classics just isn’t exciting.

  21. Wembley Blond Ambition (Saturday 21st July, the "fuck" night) Wembley Girlie Show opening night Music Brixton 2000 (Those are the ones I'd guess are considered "iconic", not sure the HMV American Life show or Up For Grabs would count).

  22. Yesterday's update: Down to 19.611.646 monthly listeners and #220 overall. No new big peaks today. - "Bye Bye Baby" EP: Not bad at all. "Madonna's Night On The Club" mix should easily reach 100.000 streams today.

  30. Here in the UK as an avid Madonna Fan from the eighties, i remember reading in one of the pop magazines of the time say around 1987, they did a piece on Madonna's Discography up until then and included some info on harder to find tracks. They mentioned that the 3.45 version of Burning up which they referred to as the exclusive video version. It was only available on CD pressings of the First Album. Up until that point, the 4.48 version was available on all UK Vinyl and Cassette pressings of the Album. Needless to say that's why the 4.48 version is NOT available on CD. So whenever the first CD editions of the First Album were released, that's when the 3.45 version was released on any Format other than Video. Not sure when the first pressings of the CD were available in the eighties, 86 perhaps?

  34. Both 4:48 original album version and video version are by Jellybean. The only Reggie Lucas versions are the single and 12" versions. The video version is another Fever situation. I want to know when they did the second pressing of the album with the video version.

  35. Every Madonna show in Brazil is iconic. (Because we are an iconic audience, ok?) I attended the two nights of Sticky & Sweet in Rio de Janeiro, December 2008. The first night was affected by a torrential rain. As she says in the mini-doc (DVD/Bluray Bonus) her team considered cancelling the show few hours before, when the stadium was already almost full. (It was a sold out night) But the Brazilian staff convinced them to do it anyway. Thank God she did it! It was epic! Almost every song there were people drying the floor. Madonna herself did it sometimes.

  43. Didn’t it state somewhere that unreleased stuff was part of the deal, like demos etc? Stuff that “fans have been wanting for for years”? You’re right, none of this shit so far really excites me. It’s nice and neat but far from exciting, to me.

  44. It's confusing! According to Today In Madonna History, the video was added to MTV in September 1983: https://todayinmadonnahistory.com/2020/09/28/today-in-madonna-history-september-28-1983-2/ Although the Burning Up/Physical Attraction single had already been out for six months by the time a video finally surfaced, it featured a new mix of the song (which differed from both the 12″ single and from the version that appeared on original vinyl pressings of the album) and was seemingly intended to promote her debut album as a whole rather than the song itself, given that Burning Up had not been actively promoted to radio by her label. The original 12'' Extended mix was Reggie Lucas version, while Jellybean remixed two versions: the one originally included on the album and the Video version - later used on all pressings of the album and the one on "Celebration", too.

  45. I don't know if it counts but... i went to 5 Madame X Tour dates BUT one of them was the first night she started the show with Vogue (2nd London night)... everybody was soooo confused when the Manifesto started playing instead of the original intro

  47. I have locked this - this debate has gone on enough - when and if she announces a tour I'll allow another thread. This isn't a space to go she can or cannot tour - we've had lots of fat shamming, look shamming, everything in the other thread, that's not acceptable on any account. I know this thread wasn't about that - and the video was to show she can tour - but this can she, can't she debate has gone on far enough.
