  1. Ok, here's my "review" of the tape: 1. Erotica - this is the final, polished version of the demo we know from the LOC tapes. 2. Waiting - sounds very much like the album version but with many changes. more samples of "Waiting... For You" throughout, Completely unique vocal ab libs towards the end. This also fades out (if memory serves the final has a piano ending) 3. Rain - Very close to the final album version except this has the double verse at the end "stand out on the mountain top..." there is also no rain effects the end 4. Deeper And Deeper - very similar to the LOC tape. No backing vocals and possibly a different vocal take. I'd need to do some comparing 5. Thief Of Hearts - similar to one of the final LOC demos, includes some unique backing vocals/harmonies, also has the "thief.. thief... thief of hearts" section at the end. Ends like the album version but much more reverb on the spoken vocals. 6. Bad Girl - similar to the LOC tape, demo vocal, repeated first verse in place of the second verse. this has backing vocals/harmonies. 7. Why's It So Hard - completely different and unique! The music is much more reggae inspired and "raw." Somewhat different structure in terms of the vocal placement. Includes the male vocals with some extra spoken bits not used in the final mix. Demo vocal from M and cold ending with male vocals 8. Where Life Begins - much clearer vocals and more basic music. The saxophone is quite prominent and loud! Vocals are an alternate take with unheard adlibs. 9. In This Life - interesting bass line, this seems like an early version of the final mix. more evolved than the LOC version, but not quite there yet. Demo vocal. spoken vocals seem to have the same "phone" effect as Bye Bye Baby vocals. 10. Words - such a fun mix! this has the final version production with many changes: completely unheard, unique intro, no spoken parts or typing effects. 11. Bye Bye Baby - similar to the final version. different instrumentation throughout. interesting, different samples in the spoken end part - feels more "hip hop" than the final mix. Same ending without the "you fucked it up" 12. Secret Garden - this sounds like the demo we have, that leaked with Dear Father 13. Goodbye To Innocence - this is a version of the LOC mix, but completely different and unique. New vocal take and it includes the final vocals "say goodbye..." lots of new harmonies throughout. pretty different to the LOC version and no where near the demo that sounds closer to Fever. 14. Shame - unique mix to the LOC tape. music is way more evolved and has a funkier beat added to the music we are familiar with. Sounds like a new lead vocal. and there you have it!

  5. To be honest I never noticed before and I own it physically! It's not that visible depending on the pressing: Of course now I can't NOT see it.

  6. Yes they were filmed in full. And the collectors have a full take of both songs with the movie versions that are being traded around

  7. I don't like singers with strong voices they usually don't sing, they show off. Interpretation is what i like, it's what she does on borderline, Papa don't preach, Oh Father, Live To Tell etc...even on dance tracks she captivates attention and demands reaction.

  8. At $3000US That would be a very generous gift! I liked what we did with @bertrand with the COAD and others - we all contribute till we get the amount needed -

  9. The lazy eye on the right. Out of all the pics George Holtz took that day, that's the one they chose ? (i was reminded of it because Madonna 80's account on social media posted this photoshoot as it was taken on this day in 83)

  10. Madonna has the final say on everything, she'd have personally chosen that photo. She likes to winky, winky, winky

  17. When Madonna was negociating her contract with Warner in 91/92 she was hanging out a lot with David Geffen, so much that the press thought that she was gonna sign with Geffen and Geffen himself said in the press at the time that he had asked Madonna to marry him even thugh he's gay. This was to put pression on Mo Ostin, Warner CEO, almost universally hated by artists and people in the business. He was against signing Madonna and only took interest when Like A Virgin sold 6 millions copies in a few weeks. He's also the one that drove Prince away. His son Michael was better but still, when he died last summer no word from Madonna. Geffen was Ostin Sr archenemy. I believe the movie versions in the film are the ones produced by Phil Ramone (he was hired since he was Flashdance ost supervisor and produced Maniac, Manhunt sung by his wife Karen and Imagination) but the producers did not like his versions of the tracks so Madonna reworked them with Jellybean and Bob Clearmountain. The question remains now, if there's a Warnng Signs demo out there, is it a demo she did (most likely with Bray) or is there a version produced by Phil Ramone and another one by Jellybean. In fact there could be 3 versions of Warning Signs : the demo with Bray, the Ramone version and the Jellybean version.

  19. Wow, you made a very good job with this report: now we're dieing to have it! Of course it's just a joke, the price was really high so just my congrats for the hit Anyway, the most interesting things seem to be the Why's it so hard raggae version (an old dream come true even just reading that in some way it is out) and the "closer to Fever" Goodbye to Innocence, with new vocals and harmonies (the early version has such a good energy imo and this one seems to be the perfect balance point of the whole process).

  21. I remember thinking at the time that it was like a challenge - eg M dared Lady Gaga to file a lawsuit that would then expose the similarities between the songs etc

  24. This is her power: EMOTION. We know she never was the big vocalist. She knows that as well. But she's able to portray so many emotions with her voice and in a subconscious way. As a recording artist she's a perfect actress, she gets your attention and tells you the story of the song. Plus, she has one of that unique voices that you heard on the radio and you KNEW instantly it was her. Not many artists have that. That's her vocal talent: emotion and uniqueness.

  26. Mmmm this is actually a nice idea: mixing the VT performance and the movie footage, maybe using the BD and the In-House DVD and getting both best qualities would result in something pretty nice...

  27. Definitely fan fiction. That would have been a huge media story. And I’m doubtful Madonna would not have fought back against that considering the song is a blatant copy.

  28. Also I remember that the Little Monsters claimed years ago that Lady Gaga and Fernando Garibay sued Madonna for singing Born This Way without Gaga's authorization or something like that and also that Madonna "lost" that demand and she paid for that sample every time she sung it on The MDNA Tour.

  29. Ok the Pattibone new track, aaaall the Nowels 2018/19 creations and the Batman love theme are my new goals (after the long awaited BS demo session od course): we gotta be ready to fight for what we believe in, right?

  32. In the Studio? I think she's brilliant, really. Her interpretation and tone quality is great, she conveys emotion and can sell any type of song. Listen to Like a Virgin, Papa Don't Preach, Justify My love, Ray of Light... There are lot of singer with more power/control/octaves/technique but few can be as versatile as Madonna. Live? Well... She has a few great moments and is okay most of the time but also has horrible performances throughout her career.
    3 points
  33. Well. She’s had moments where she’s pretty good, but she’s never had a phenomenal vocal performance. Even the 1991 Oscar isn’t brilliant with regards to timing. The majority of her live vocals are average to poor with the occasional horrendous… but we all know that and it’s nothing new… … but she conveys emotion better than pretty much anyone. Honorable mention goes to the 2014 TV performances, she sounded better than she had in a decade

  34. Maybe these are the versions Shep worked on while M was filming? It says somewhere in the diaries how he made more polished mixes that she hated and went back to the rough demo versions. It would be great to finally know what the differences are

  37. She is no Celine or Whitney.... but she has something else in her voice that makes it stand out... and that makes it very hard for people to cover her songs without falling flat and sounding boring... so technically not an outstanding vocalist... emotionally her voice is amazing though... one of the best female voices ever for me.

  40. The Super club EP and this Cd collection are japanese releases, because on top of licensing being a nightmare it can vary from region to region. Regarding the Vision Quest Soundtrack, it was produced by Jon Peters, the guy that inspired Warren Beatty in Shampoo, whom Bradley Cooper impersonates in Licorice Pizza and Barbra Streisand's boyfriend at the time (later co-producer of Who's That Girl), the reason why Madonna met her at her place around then with Jellybean (by whom Streisand was also interested for a remix). This came after the success of OST like Flashdance (Gambler sounds an awfully lot like Maniac which Jellybean remixed along What A Feeling and Manhunt) and Footloose (Vision Quest being the same kind of movie critics considered only as vehicles for soundtracks more than actual movies) so Peters was very hands on the soundtrack, and nobody f*cks with Jon Peters, he fought Mo Ostin to have Crazy For You released as a single. Even threatened him physically. Geffen was still considered a new label then and its distribution had many canals including Warner distribution.

  41. I think she does not have a voice for big things, it´s like she can´t hear herself well. If you pay atention, when she does capella singing, she has a small voice but very beautiful and pitch perfect. I love her as a singer, I think her unique voice is one of her signature things. Oks, she is not Streisand or Dion, it´s not her style, but her voice sold many great numbers, Like a prayer is not the same without her, the same can be said about ROL album and many many other albums. I loved when she showed us that she trained her voice, being the perfecionist she always has been. It´s like that last Madonna does not give a damn about anything work related, and singing is in it sadly.

  42. I don't really understand why it even matters if she is technically a good vocalist or not. Would Madonna's iconic songs somehow be better or more iconic if Whitney Houston or Lady Gaga was singing them instead? I don't care if Madonna is technically a good singer, what I do know is that I enjoy her music and the voice is all part of the appeal.
