  2. I agree 100%. And I add this: I need her to give some space to harmonies and backing vocals. I mean real backing vocals. In the Sun article they write she's trying her best to give her old and new fanbase what they want. Well I'm sure a lot of us would be amazed by a Nicky and Donna come back to deliver a trademark Madonna sound, with contemporary arrangements and an interesting retrospective of her back catalogue. They sent clear opening messages to her in the last years. I mostly need to listen to her singing and exploring the tone of her classics (it's time to get Live to tell back on the stage by the way) with beautiful theatrics, some rough live arrangements (I wanna feel the vibe of a good bassline and some real percussions) and three or four effective dance numbers. I hope it's going to be captivating to listen to.

  5. And all the Björk written song hype - Björk was the coolest thing in the UK at that moment. Plus great formats and tracklists: CD 1 was a little digipack/box with an empty space to include CD 2 if you bought that other format as well (great marketing): 01. Bedtime Story (Junior's Single Mix) 02. Secret (Allstar Mix) 03. Secret (Some Bizarre Mix) 04. Secret (Some Bizarre Single Mix) And a little cool illustrated booklet: CD 2 had all new remixes as well: 01. Bedtime Story (Album Edit) 02. Bedtime Story (Junior's Wet Dream Mix) 03. Bedtime Story (Junior's Dreamy Drum Dub) 04. Bedtime Story (Orbital Mix) 05. Bedtime Story (Junior's Sound Factory Mix) Also, way less competition (and less sales needed to chart in the Top 10-Top 5) in February than in December (Christmas season). "Bedtime Story" had a great debut (#4) and it stayed in the Top 10 in the second week (#8) but was already out of the Top 20 by its third week (#21) and out of the Top 40 in the fourth week (#41). So in the end it probably ended up selling less copies than "Take A Bow" in total. "Bedtime Story" UK chart run: 4 - 8 - 21 - 41 - 61 - 61 - 62 - 72 - 80 - OUT Re-entry: 66 - 86 - 80 - 93 In case anyone wonders if the "Bedtime Story" single helped the album... well, not that much, maybe staying in the Top 40 a little bit longer. "Bedtime Stories" (the album) was #31 in the UK the week before the "Bedtime Story" single release, and this was its chart run after: 32 - 34 - 37 - 47 - 57 - 57 - 62

  6. The question "Why did Take a Bow miss the top ten in the UK?" should perhaps rather be: Why was Take a Bow so successful in the US - and less so in the rest of the world? After all, the song charted not so great almost everywhere outside North America. R&B was blossoming (again) in the U.S. in 1994, while the rest of the world had little interest in it at that time. The reason Take a Bow was so well received in the U.S. was, that the song appealed to many young people who actually preferred to listen to hipper artists like Aaliyah, Toni Braxton, R. Kelly, Da Brat, SWV, Jodeci or Boyz II Men. The song seamlessly blended into the hottest urban radio stations playlists with its R&B sound. The sound of Take a Bow was perfect for North America, but the rest of the (western) world preferred to listen to pop, rock ballads, eurodance and hip-hop in a pop sound. Probably outside North America remixes for Survival or Don't Stop would have been much better single alternatives. Maybe Take a Bow would have had much more impact if it had been the first single - even though I like Secret much better.

  7. Madame X sounded like a CD playing for the instrumentation and pre-recorded vocals put over the top - worst sound to date with Rebel Heart much the same. On a fan clip on Medellin from Madame X at one show the instrumentation skipped a few times exactly how a CD player that had got stuck sounds. Really hope Mike Dean is not involved again

  9. The Reinvention tour was a bit karaoke sounding at times actually. His work on the Confessions was of course sensational though. I really don’t think we will be going back to the days of a full live band. It would be great but I just don’t think it’s a priority for the type of shows she does.

  11. My life is terrible at the moment. I'm going through a series of personal crises with no happy endings possible. I want to be able to go along and sob my heart out to Crazy For You, Live To Tell and The Power of Goodbye. I hope she includes at least one of those. But I'd also love to dance along to Borderline, True Blue and Cherish. This new tour has given me something to look forward to.

  12. Here in Australia, it missed the top 10 also despite being issued as 2 cd singles and giving away a large poster with each purchase - Warner Australia were then instructed to step it up for Bedtime Story and the album so we got the interview and heavy second promo campaign and Bedtime Story was issued as a gold cd single with bonus poster, left over Take A Bow posters were given away with the Bedtime Story cassette single etc I think for some reason TAB with it's BabyFace sound just didn't resonate with radio too much or Australian audiences.

  13. You said name one 90's song. I gave you two. Maybe it's not personally memorable to you, but those two songs of Barb's were commercially successfully for her. Both songs sold just as much as Madonna's Take A Bow and got some healthy radio spins, specifically I Finally Found Someone. Anyway, I personally don't feel Take A Bow or Barbra songs are anything alike. I don't believe M and B necessarily have the same targeted audience, but in this case Barb's two songs appeal to a lot of the same general audience Madonna had at the time. I'm sure a lot of that is due to Evita and Barb is known for these sort of type of big songs. Lastly, I agree Barbara is boring, but that's my personal opinion. Still, I can't deny the huge career, impact and success she's had over decades. In fact, I'm sure Barb has a far more dedicated and faithful fan base than Madonna.

  14. I worked with LN a lot for the tour via Madonna Australia and yes there were shows planned for Sydney and Melbourne on the Wednesdays and Thursdays and when the demand was not there for these shows, they moved the Brisbane shows so the tour would end in Sydney and finish a week earlier

  16. She has nothing left to prove anymore. If todays generation wouldn't be so tasteless, i'd worry too, but just look at the charts right now and who they give #1s. To have Madonna still around and seeing her still enjoying making music and doing tours is actually a blessing.

  18. Totally agree. Re-Invention still had some great live moments, but I felt like Confession even though there was a lot of pre-recorded vocals, it sounded so live. It sounded so much organic and her live vocals and backing seem to blend beautifully. I prefer she go back to the live band of the Girlie Show. Now that was pretty much live! Unfortunately, I think those days are gone and her voice may not be as strong as when it was then.

  19. It got lost in the Christmas chart, when sales are really high. It actually sold more than bedtime story and that got to number 4.

  20. Live backing singers on MXT? The Batukadeiras mics weren’t even switched on. It would certainly be nice to go back to a real live sound, but it’s been years since she done anything with proper instrumentation including real drums. Those pre-recorded drums just lack any sort of life or depth.

  21. Same reason for most countries outside of the US. Babyface RnB sounded VERY American / middle of the road radio / adult contemporary snooze. Back then, I thought he sounded super cheesy, reminded me of easy listening crap à la Barbra Streisand. Not edgy enough and not touching either. In comparison, Trip hop acts (Massive Attack, Portishead...) sounded from the future and brought soulful ballads to another place. Thankfully, M ditched the Babyface/Mariah/Whitney balladry soon enough and went a little bit more experimental with I'll Remember later on.

  22. I remember when it came it it was pretty lost in the Christmas sales. I Remember buying it on both the UK CD's just because one was limited edition and maybe the 7" picture disc but it wasn't very exciting. It didn't get as much air play over here but it was shown a lot on MTV and VH1. I am surprised it didn't do better. It was all about the remixes at this point for me.

  24. Radio was all over it in the U.S. Sales weren't as impressive as one would think for a song that topped the chart for 7 weeks in a row. Babyface and that R&B sound was huge then, even though Madonna hopped on that bandwagon a little late in the game. It was definitely a song that appeased the general public. A lot of people that I knew, who didn't like Madonna much, loved that song. I'm sure people in the UK weren't really interested in Babyface as he wasn't as successful there as he was in the U.S.

  25. The formats and tracklists were shit and the album was already out (didn't have the hype of being the first single pre-album launch). I mean: Regular CD: 01. Take A Bow (Edit) 02. Take A Bow (Album Version) 03. Take A Bow (Instrumental) Limited Edition CD: 01. Take A Bow (Edit) 02. Take A Bow (Album Version) 03. Take A Bow (Instrumental) Plus 3 postcards with black and white versions of pictures already included on the "Bedtime Stories" album, two of them the cover and the back cover: Maybe the remixes were not ready when Warner UK decided to release it for Christmas or they just didn't care to include them but anyway it was a lazy release and honestly it deserved to flop a little bit. What was the point to buy it if you already had the "Bedtime Stories" album? Or maybe that was the point: to drive album sales. In that case it worked cause it helped the album to go from Top 20 to Top 15 positions after "Take A Bow" (its peak was #2 on its first week). "Bedtime Stories" UK chart run pre "Take A Bow" release: 2 - 4 - 9 - 13 - 18 - 18 - 18 The following weeks after the "Take A Bow" singe release: 16 - 17 - 13 - 15 - 16 - 15 - 15 It helped the album. The single didn't do THAT badly itself, it stayed three weeks on the Top 20: 17 - 16 - 18 - 21 - 25 - 32 - 44 - 61 - 71 But of course compared to the US #1 it wasn't good enough.

  26. I would love it if she had a section where she switched it up every night and also included random songs like in the later shows of the RH tour - in Australia we never knew what she would do in the 3rd section and got Take A Bow, Crazy For You etc and in the 4th section some random stuff like Hanky Panky and even the Erotica chorus. For fans who attend multiple shows, it's great when she changes parts of the setlist.

  27. Everybody Holiday Like A Virgin Material Girl Crazy For You Into The Groove Live To Tell Papa Dont Preach Open Your Heart La Isla Bonita Like A Prayer Express Yourself Vogue Erotica Human Nature Frozen Ray Of Light Music Don't Tell Me Hung Up 4 Minutes Girl Gone Wild Bitch I'm Madonna Medellin I think this will be the long and short of it with some of these songs being a medley. There'll be nods to Lucky Star / WIFLFAG / Give It 2 Me / American Life / Celebration / Justify My Love here and there but I'd bank on the above being the main thrust of the setlist. I think it's the one time she's coming to absolutely knock peoples socks off with the amount of hits she's had. If she'd gonna do a greatest hits she's gonna do a greatest hits. No Re-invention hits in spite cause my album flopped nonsense. She's not coming to play. I also think if there's any songs she has in her head that will be center pieces of the film she will probably work those in there somewhere.

  29. I Finally Found Someone : 1996 Tell Him : 1997 Tell Him was quite a hit I guess, but in no way it was targeted at the same radio stations and CD buyers as TAB. Don't get me wrong, I never said that Barbra Streisand isn't a good singer or whatever. And yes, it is very subjective of me to think that her music in the 90s was boring, despite her talent.
    2 points
  30. Yes, the music changed very fast that time. In 1994 urban music was very rare on European charts and in 1995/96 the dam broke for R&B/rap with Coolio, Bobby Brown, Mariah, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Blackstreet, Nas, Fugees, Warren G, Toni Braxton, Luniz, Puff Daddy, B.IG., to name some. Radio stations that had previously been opposed to urban music opened up to it. But at that time Madonna was already working again on a completely different direction with Ray of Light.
    2 points
  31. Well that's a loaded subjective question, so no matter how this is answered, you'll no doubt come back with your own opinion that it's not "worth remembering". But I can name two memorable hits from her that became a top 10 in the mid 90's from her. "Tell Him" and "I Finally Found Someone". Both were huge radio hits across the globe. Both were nominated for Grammys and won numerous awards.
    2 points
  32. She also hung out with a few other famous basketball players such as Dennis Rodman at the time, but I agree Tupac influence was definitely there. And it's so true that the UK didn't start appreciating that R&B wave until later in 95 and 96. It's probably why "Human Nature" fared better than Take A Bow. It's amazing what a few months can do from region to region. By the end of '95 and especially in '96, Babyface influence songs and his own started hitting the top ten in the UK. By then, Eric Clapton and Whitney released their penned Babyface songs. Meanwhile in the next year or two, US would spin back around to Pop again, specifically boy bands and pop princesses started to crop up such as Britney, Christina and Jessica Simpson. Then there was the Spice Girls and the numerous boy bands like Backstreet Boys and Nsync.

  34. Yes, this makes so much sense. You're right. The sound she tapped into was very popular at the time in the U.S. Most anything Babyface was connected to at the time became a hit. The more I think about it, it probably was best she hopped on the Babyface sound later than most other artists. That would have meant, she would have to compete with other artists that included him. Also, R&B ballads were just huge during that time in the U.S. In general, the most popular genre these days in the U.S. is R&B/Hip Hop and Country music. Madonna has always been connected to R&B roots since her early days, so it makes sense why she gravitates to working with more urban artists even today. I know that annoys a lot of fans, but it's who she is. And I'm sure there is a part of her is hoping that she can pop at least one more time in the U.S, being it is the biggest market to be successful in for any artist.

    2 points
  36. Take a Bow is Babyface`s signature through and through and was the sound that the youth heard at the time. He was the hottest producer (Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men, Bobby Brown, Shanice) having just won three Grammys (now 12) with over 20 number 1 hits. You can replace Madonna's voice rather than Babyface`s sound and production from that song. The fact that Take a Bow had massive success mainly in the US, where Babyface and his sound were very popular, speaks for itself. Outside North America, R&B wasn't that popular yet, so they didn't have much interest in the song.

  37. The success of a single back then depended on many factors, radio airplay and promotion being one of them, but the formats and the content mattered, especially in the UK and Europe where airplay didn't count for the official charts, just pure single sales. That's why artists and record companies worked hard to include especial content on each release, especially in the 90s, that being new remixes, exclusive b-sides, free posters, postcards... whatever they could. To sell the same song twice to audiences who already had it on their parent albums they needed something extra. The difference between including a new unreleased song on a single or nothing at all was massive in the 90s. "Secret" had an exclusive non-album track. "Take A Bow" had nothing at all in the UK. US was different. Radio was very important there. "Take A Bow" was #1 in the US cause radio played it to death, probably with a little help from Warner (payola, ahem ahem), if we're being honest.

  39. 1. I would kill for a live band. Imagine Madonna calling for "one more chorus" randomly. Dream. 2. After Australia didnt come out for her for Rebel Heart and they had to shift the dates because the demand wasn't there for the dates they had planned, id be surprised if she went back. Which is a shame for whats left of her fanbase down under as the fans she does have left there are fiercely loyal.

  40. I was very disappointed with how the single was released. They didn't utilise any of the gorgeous images from the video on the front cover but instead recycled from Secret. The track listings were boring and could've done with some really great remixes by David Morales, Todd Terry and / or Frankie Knuckles who all were adept at transforming ballads into dancefloor smashes. Last, but not least, a previously unreleased track would've been a nice bonus too.

  48. The Top 10 is calculated with the streams of the last 28 days, but the numbers on the right are the all-time total streams on Spotify for those tracks. That's why "Back That Up" is still low compared to the other ones, it's only been out for a week.
