  2. The official US release date for Lucky Star as a stand-alone single was August 8, 1984. Prior to that it was the B-Side to Holiday which was released on September 7, 1983. Holiday was chosen as the A-Side because it was performing better in the clubs. The UK got Lucky Star as a single first, on September 9, 1983. It was released to coincide with her performance at Camden Palace, You can see the "sunglasses" 12" in the background of the photos from Camden Palace. At the start of 1984 Madonna had to pay huge legal fees as she was being sued by Camille Barbone for breach of contract. She was persuaded to record a video for Lucky Star as it was sure to boost album sales and make her enough money to pay off the legal debt. Due to heavy rotation on MTV and good radio play, Warners decided to put it out as the 5th and final single from the first album, even though Like A Virgin was about to drop.

  5. There are absolutely no hints about "Angel" or "Into The Groove" coming but people have gone crazy with the tracklists in the last two pages. I don't think we're having anything this week either, honestly.

  14. "Everybody" didn't chart literally anywhere apart from the dance charts in US. I love the song and it has certainly grown in status over the years (as well as the rest of M's debut album, deservedly) but in late 80s/90s that whole early Madonna stuff was considered aerobics music (by M's own admission).

  16. I’d prefer ITG to be with Angel. It doesn’t warrant its own release. Nor do I expect we’ll get the video version or movie version.

  17. What do y’all think of this tracklist for the ‘Into the Groove’ EP? 1. Into the Groove - 4:45 2. Everybody - 4:52 3. Shoo-Bee-Doo - 5:17 4. Into the Groove (Video Edit) - 3:52 5. Into the Groove (Movie Version) - 4:48 6. Into the Groove (Demo Version) - 4:51 Maybe ‘Angel’ should be released separately: 1. Angel (7" Version) - 3:40 2. Angel (Extended Dance Remix) - 6:15 3. Angel (LP Version) - 3:56 4. Angel (Dance Mix Edit) - 4:56 5. Burning Up (Alternate LP Version) - 4:48 Edit: Added one more track to either tracklist.

  23. I do think there will be a Celebration: Tour Edition released this year though. Make it up to 40 tracks from 82-09 (adding 4 extra tracks from the Warner years such as True Blue, Deeper & Deeper, Causing A Commotion and Give It To Me), whilst also fixing some of the edits to make them help her general streaming (e.g. Holiday 7", Dress You Up with proper opening, Cherish IC version...) It's a no brainer really considering the branding synergy with the tour, although I'm not sure how it might in with the album re-issues. (Scary thought, imagine this was the only re-issue this year...)

  24. Talking about the Holiday video, i've just read this in the Lucky Star book from 1985 by Michael McKenzie & Martin Burgoyne So the Burning Up video was not released at the same time as the single but way after the album release and after the Holiday single release (the first off the album in june of 1983) when the song was finally a hit after Thanksgiving of 1983. That's when they did the Burning Up video. Then Borderline AND Lucky Star were shot a week apart in February of 1984 Like A Virgin was supposed to be released on july 18th 1984 but was postponed due to the success of the re-release of Lucky Star (originally released in september of 1983). The timeline was really confusing to me, fact is the videos were not released with the singles except for Borderline and the re-release of Lucky Star but why did they shot that video in february when the single had been already out since september and if Holiday was too "dance oriented" for MTV then, so was Lucky Star, unless that one, in all its simpicity was made exclusively for clubs. So Jellybean remixed Burning Up in the last quarter of 1983 to make it sound less "dance oriented" and more "new wave" because that was what MTV played then (Rock and New Wave only). So maybe they sent Lucky star to MTV and people digged it even though it was too dance oriented for MTV. How this one got re-released and pushed back Like A Virgin (which already had a release date as seen in this book) to november is still a blur (to me at least).

  25. The Who’s That Girl soundtrack songs were very much dubbed inferior versions of songs that had gone before them. Into The Groove La Isla Bonita Live To Tell. I adore the WTG songs but even I can see why people thought that. Everybody & Burning Up would never have made it on there. This is Immaculate Madonna not “the singles”. Dress You Up really should have made the cut tbh. It was a single from her biggest selling US album and only two songs were there to represent it. The debut has three, True Blue had four, and Prayer had three. So Dress You Up was robbed and it sort of fits that dance pop vibe of the whole album more than say True Blue or Who’s That Girl. If anything should have been cut in it’s place it probably should have been Lucky Star which was not as big as hit at all.

  29. This isn’t necessarily true. It’s like the UK kids show “The Saturday Show,” for the longest time everyone thought M’s 1984 appearance had been destroyed, but low and behold it was intact and just sitting in the archives. And now after all these years, we have it.

  34. In the 80-90s nothing was kept. Most part of film for TV recordings and such were destroyed for lack of storage or reuse and erased. It's hard to find any decent documentary, TV recordings from the times.

  35. I’m slowly guiding my bf through it bit my bit, out of order of course so I can cater to his tastes. So far he’s listened to Ray of Light (the album). He enjoyed it and was surprised that the opening song was “like theatre.” He said Shanti was “weird and has not aged well” 😂 but overall enjoyed the album. Then he randomly discovered Frozen from Madame X on YouTube and said he loved the performance art and the implication between mother/daughter . Then I showed him Justify my Love from The Girlie Show. Not sure where we’ll go next, I’m playing it by ear. I feel Madonna needs to be visual experience though as well@Tiago Lisboa Rodrigues I would consider hosting a Madonna video night where you play a selection of videos and live performances.

Just like Dolly Parton and many, many other women, Madonna looks amazing with a few extra pounds on her. TRULY! Everybody's someones type. And thank heavens for that! It gives us curvey guys some hope.
