  1. Elton John walks past at an event... "Nice ass!" (sticks fingers down throat)
  2. Just for fun, lunch break during painting today "Oh please, don't talk to me about sex, I LITERALLY wrote the book on it!" Who else do you know that can actually say that and mean it?!
  3. The BBB mixes are awesome, I always thought. Shame it never got a real video. I think there's a demo from the Rain Tapes without the vocal effect, but could be mistaken, usually am
  4. Music journalists write in such a baffling way sometimes... Didn't really understand what he meant with The Look of Love and Nothing Fails. Personally, I love You Must Love Me :p
  5. Maybe it's the fans that have become predictable
  6. I haven't voted, but I'd only be interested if the focus was on music as that's all I'm really interested in. For example, I also like Kate Bush, Lisa Gerrard, Enya and Siouxsie Sioux, but I'm not interested in the other areas of their lives. I know nothing about them and still enjoy their work. The late night sessions, the living room gigs, the writing process, the recording studio where time is money... Madonna once said in the inlay notes of Something To Remember that little attention gets paid to her music, so if a documentary puts the focus on that, I'm up for it!
  7. Wow that's a lot! Great find @Inco! Now we know!
  8. @LiamThe range of just the songs she uses "like a" are so broad I'd really be disappointed if some saw that as repetitive as well. Being able to use similes in grammar, let alone writing songs, is a great tool in conveying how we feel about something. When I worked as a teaching assistant it's one of the things we'd commend the kids on, so why not accomplished artists like Madonna who's made so many songs that have embedded themselves in our hearts She knows the power of simplicity and beauty of a great melody.
  9. @poserdemadonnaOh yes, I forgot about those, must be so many with "you" alone!
  10. I love when @Liamposts, for ages thought about doing a Liam Appreciation thread! You're right, if we look at the many times she's used "girl", but hasn't really used "woman", hope maybe the new album will address that. Other words.... God, love, waiting, time, hesitating...
  11. Madonna does enjoy her use of similes. They're scattered throughout her carer, so I thought we should celebrate them in this thread. Plus, it also acts as compiling a pretty nifty playlist of tracks that usually would never fit together. Did I miss any out? Can you think of any more? Like A Virgin Like A Prayer Like A Flower Like An Angel Passing Through My Room Like a train (The Look Of Love) Like a poison flower (Erotic) * Like a knife (Words) Like a father to me (In This Life) Like a moth to a flame (To Have And Not To Hold) Like a circle (Easy Ride) Like a bitch out of order (Gang Bang)** Like a bomb (I'm A Sinner) *** Like a samurai (Beautiful Killer) Like a masochist (Rebel Heart) * truck ** bat, fish *** storm, sun, train Special mention: Like a virgin (Veni Vidi Vici)
  12. It's such a shame when people can't redirect their energies to more meaningful and positive things in life.
  13. Maybe not predictable, more like... Comfortable? When she'd try something new and "reinvent" she would say it was like revealing layers, that these personas were part of her. Perhaps since peeling back the onion since 1983 there's nothing else to reveal. Maybe she's just finally comfortable with who she is, a mother and a business woman. Also, I remember when when the Girlie Show launched and MTV ran all these interviews, she was asked about cutting her hair and she replied that changing your hair shakes you up a bit, changes the way you think and feel and even move. She hasn't changed her hairstyle (apart from wigs and extensions) since her divorce I think.
  14. @Suzy Q. God yes, Rollo and Sister Bliss would have been super! And Daft Punk was a missed opportunity. Toddy Terry and Frankie Knuckles were remixing ballads back in the 90s but we never saw them on a Madonna release, sadly.
  15. I could also imagine Vanilla Ice doing JML and Erotica. And De La Soul maybe remixing them too.
  16. @RorySAW remixes would have worked so well for Madonna, really enjoyed the days of remixes of Sinitta, Kylie etc. Did they do remixes of artists who weren't on their label though? Was never sure. Pet Shop Boys would have been great as well. If I were to go beyond those she had contact with and matching the eras, would also choose Francois K, Fischerspooner, Goldfrapp, Nitin Sawhney, Omni Trio, Underworld, Chemical Brothers, Georgio Moroder, Scissor Sisters and Vitalic for anything from ROL to AL. Hmmm... And... Missy Elliott for Vogue Timbaland for Erotica Neptunes for Holiday
  17. @Liam I just checked; Prince, Lenny Kravitz and Beastie Boys did do remixes, and TBW is listed as a Lenny mix together with M would love to have been a fly on the wall in the studio that day!
  18. @LiamIn my fantasy they would have made exceptions at the request of Her Majesty I was always under the impression that M and Lenny remixed The Beast Within together, but that's perhaps something that got muddled in my memories. I'm 50/50 on that one. Ah damn I forgot to add Dress You Up in my Shep list! That's it exactly, I was thinking of the Luke Slater TPOG mixes and 100 mixes by Rauhofer for NRM when I started to reimagine them by different remixers. Just tightly edited, nicely remixed tracks under 5 minutes. Something alternative to the album versions. Not 10 minute long repeative ones.
  19. I started to think it recently, who I might have liked to have remixed Madonna singles in the past. I limited it to only those she already contact with, either personally, through her label or management, rather than just anyone. I came up with these. I chose Prince for the LAP singles as they were already working together. And I chose him again for Erotica as that would have been amazing, considering the production on Diamonds and Pearls and the Love Symbol albums. Am sure it would have been something filthy. Shep for the 80s mixes as he could have had easy access in preparation for the Immaculate Collection mixes. I liked how he would rebuild a track from scratch, actually producing rather than just remixing. I chose him again for Human Nature as I'm sure he would have found a way to sample Express Yourself! Ken-Lou and Murk Boys are frequently listed as I really enjoyed what they did on Erotica and Fever and thought they'd add something incredible to the chosen tracks. Same for Betts and Orbit. I imagine Pablo Flores would have done something amazing with You'll See. Danny Tenaglia's remixes of Human Nature didn't really work for me, but I could imagine him reworking Don't Stop. The Ray of Light era could have seen Trent Reznor, Massive Attack and Air doing great stuff. The Beastie Boys pop up on my list too, would have been awesome, considering their history with M. My list stops at American Life though. I didn't really seem to care about remixes after that. Who would you have liked and what tracks could they have remixed, and why? Open Your Heart (Shep Pettibone) Papa Don't Preach (Shep Pettibone) La Isla Bonita (Shep Pettibone) Gambler (Shep Pettibone) Over And Over (Shep Pettibone) Where's The Party (Shep Pettibone) Who's That Girl (Shep Pettibone) Like A Prayer (Prince) Express Yourself (Prince) Justify My Love (Beastie Boys) Rescue Me (Lenny Kravitz and William Orbit) This Used To Be My Playground (William Orbit) Erotica (Prince) Rain (Murk Boys, Ken-Lou, David Morales, William Orbit) Bad Girl (Andre Betts, Ken-Lou) Waiting (William Orbit) I'll Remember (Shep Pettibone) Secret (Shep Pettibone, David Morales, Dallas Austin) Take A Bow (Ken-Lou, Andre Betts, Dallas Austin) Bedtime Story (William Orbit, Murk Boys) Human Nature (Shep Pettibone) Don't Stop (Danny Tenaglia) You'll See (Pablo Flores) Crazy For You (Steve Hurley, Dallas Austin) Frozen (Massive Attack, Craig Armstrong, Robert Miles, Trent Reznor) Ray of Light (Beastie Boys, The Prodigy, Orbital) Drowned World (Air, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Marius de Vries, Orbital) Nothing Really Matters (Mac and Quayle, Massive Attack) The Power of Goodbye (Talvin Singh, Moby, Mac and Quayle, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Marius de Vries) Skin (Marius de Vries, Stereo MCs, Kruder and Dorfmeister, BT) To Have And Not To Hold (Talvin Singh) Mer Girl (Talvin Singh, Trent Reznor, Massive Attack) What It Feels Like For A Girl (Air, Stuart Price, Bix Sigurdson) Paradise (Air, Talvin Singh) Love Profusion (Air, Stuart Price) Nothing Fails (Stuart Price)
  20. Oh gosh I forgot about Lament, spine tingling! Up to this day I have not actually seen the leaked footage though. The Bedtime Story interlude was incredible as well. Loved the bagpipe section too.
  21. After DWT, and especially since TGS, I never thought she'd perform Vogue, LAP or MG ever again. She seemed to disowning her own back catalog, so it came as a surprise. The biggest surprise was The Beast Within, a song I was obsessed with so much since 1990. I loved the new musical arrangement SP came up with, although a lot of the verses were removed. She looked stunning throughout but I don't think the hairnet and hat was a nice look. The LAP section was a letdown after waiting all those years to hear it live again. The beat sounded cheap and there wasn't proper bass. Guy Pratt played amazing bass on the original and they've never been able to duplicate or surpass it. BA's LAP will always be unbeatable but the RIT is so weak. It needed to be bombastic and groundshaking. It could've been much better. I'm So Stupid would've been a great addition with the guitar riff from The Stooges. Holywood and Love Profusion needed to be on that tour. Stand out moment; Mother and Father with Intervention. Strange she dedicated Crazy for You to her fans seeing as she said she hated the song previously.
  22. Just put Candy Shop and Human Nature, the only two songs Madonna thinks matters for any fan hahahaha
  23. Quite some songs over the years. Who's That Girl reminds me of the summer of my childhood, growing up in Trinidad and going out with my older brother and sister, being with my aunties, dancing with my mom. La Isla Bonita reminds me of the island I left in 1988 when I moved to the UK aged 9. Like A Prayer (more it's visuals) appealed a child who was questioning things at a young age; religion, racial identity and discrimination. Oh Father stood out for me, always, because of the strained relationship I had with my father figures growing up and then leaving home at an early age. Love Tried to Welcome Me because I always thought I'd be alone. Take A Bow and I Want You were quite meaningful because I had strong feelings for people I couldn't be with. You'll See was my anthem when I left home. I thought I'd be strong. Frozen was like an awakening, stirring feelings to want to experiment with sound. I was in love with its grand production and visuals. Drowned World, again because I always felt alone in a crowded room. Mer Girl's lyrics were fascinating. Like Promise to Try and Inside of Me, they gave an insight into someone still dealing with grief. Although I hadn't yet experienced such a loss, I would later learn through therapy that I was grieving the loss of my childhood which ended too soon. The Power of Goodbye. I always understood the song to be more about death than a relationship. It's stronger in the demo I think. To be so at a loss, than you would be ready to give it all up. Been there many times over. Same with Paradise and Nobody's Perfect. Mother And Father for personal reasons. There was a time I was happy in my life, when I had both mother and father. And I questioned why they couldn't be with me. Nothing Fails, X-Static Process, Intervention and Easy Ride all appealed to me as someone constantly questioning things and trying to understand why I feel the way I do. Never Let You Go is a song I felt close to, I could close my eyes and just let it take me. Standing in my own darkness and feeling the music sway me. I Fucked Up. I do it a lot. Tragic Girl because I can be in my mind. Those are the songs that mean the most to me. Other notable ones are Live To Tell, I'll Remember, Something To Remember, Little Girl, Spanish Eyes, Dear Jessie, Isaac, Ariosa, Swim, Supernatural, Secret Garden, Sanctuary, The Beast Within, Act of Contrition and Be Careful with My Heart.
