Not my favourite but definitely not her worst. Is there really a BAD album in her catalogue? I'd rather say weak instead compared to others.
I agree when they say it's like a "Justin Timberlake & Timbaland vs Pharrel Williams featuring vocals by guest star Madonna" record. It truly is  Despite the R&B infused energy in most songs you can still 'feel' there's Madonna underneath the whole thing: cheeky lyrics, Esther still preaching about Kabbalah, and her already coined classic motto tick tock tick tock tick tock.
It still bothers me how dull the Give It 2 Me video is since it really deserved a better concept. The performance at the promo gigs was so much fun... why rush it and release that crap Munro filmed? The late 2000s were really her weakest in terms of music videos. It's like Warner didn't even want to spend a cent on her... just look at Celebration
And Miles Away? A wonderful track that deserved better promo. Sad she hasn't performed it live again.
I'm curious that she didn't do 4 Minutes at the Super Bowl. It fit perfectly!

Like a Prayer is a more specific song I think. La Isla Bonita is more melodic and cheerful, you can hear it at parties and find it as part of quite a few playlists. People apparently need something less serious and more summery for lockdown April

I was in junior high when it came out. I pretty much was discovering her discography in the summer of 2011 and that's when I became a fan. So I was very excited to witness my first era. It was November I think that the GMAYL demo leaked. I adored it, I was listening to a lot of bubblegum pop back then and I hadn't really created that impression of Madonna as a quality artist that should say no to any lesser song. For me she was just a dance queen and GMAYL gave me just that. Then I fell in love with Masterpiece and Elton's face at the Globes, the GGW song and video, which I still think is one of the best. In March she would upload small snippets of her songs and while most people seemed to love Gang Bang I was instantly drawn to I Don't Give A. It sounded so different for her (the snippet had that cute baby Jesus lyric). I had too much time to even edit my fb profile picture to look like her broken mirror effect on the covers, listen to Best Friend and I Fucked Up a thousand times every time I would fight with my best friend crush, even spend hours comparing her to Gaga which was the coolest thing back then. Since then of course I've listened to pretty much every album of hers and I'm not sure MDNA is a good album anymore. But I don't really care, it was my first era and the perfect album for that point of my life. A great album for early '10s pop too. My only problem was that the whole era died too early, like the next ones.

No, you're right, I deviated from your question... but I have to say I remember every M album in the Eighties and Nineties being very very popular and between the best!
I agree, 1987 was an incredible year!!
I would add U2 Joshua tree, Faith by George Michael, Sting's Nothing like the sun, Actually by Pet shop boys, Terence Trent d'Arby, Whitney...
WOW! Best year in music EVER!!!!

LAP is absolutely the best album of 1989, but there are some honorable mentions: Janet's Rhythm Nation, Tears for fears' The seeds of love, Cher's Heart of stone.
I think the best records of 1994 were Blur's Parklife, Oasis' Definetly Maybe and TLC's CrazySexyCool. Can't say Bedtime stories deserves the podium...
1998: best album is ROL indeed, but also Lauren Hill and Believe by Cher.
2000's best album is Eminem Marshall Mathers imo.

I understand that. But a ranking of songs has to be all about the songs and not the music videos. For example I believe she has released very few singles better than Nothing Fails which has no cringey video, yet I never see it close to the top. It's at 70 here if I'm not mistaken. As for the younger guys, well I'm sure the older fans would gladly have one in their bed but they can't. She can and I don't see the problem in it. If she were kissing guys her age in music videos, it would be ugly to watch anyway ?

I’m an older Madonna fan and have been a fan since 1987 and I don’t like all her old stuff but I would rather listen to hanky panky or even jimmy jimmy than shit like BIM or Turn off the radio - I think it’s her image that puts a lot of us “older “ fans of her new stuff especially her music videos which when she dances or snogs guys young enough to be her kids it just comes off as desperate and sad ☹️

@EnricoSorry I never mentioned any problem  I just wanted to hear about great music in the same years that Madonna released her albums. Or if people thought that she really made the best music that year. Just like the Grammys but from the fans' point of view, thank you.

I'm sorry but you are not fair to Madonna... rushed music video ? badly photoshop artworks and so on ?
Are we talking of the 5 BEAUTIFUL music videos that was made for Madame X ? Are we taking of the stunning covers for her most recent albums ? The musical quality of them ?
She still gives her fans iconic things, much more than a box set that would celebrate the success of a 30 years old albums.
I'm here for her new music, waiting in line to see what's next. I can celebrate her career anytime, don't need her to spend time with it. And that's the most important thing, that's what keeps her relevant. She 's no Alanis Morissette, relying on Jagged Little Pill to stay relevant (sure she will mark every big anniversary of it- no offense I love her. If Madonna's team would rely on past glorious albums, that is exactely what will be killing her career. Thank God, Madonna's career is alive and to me she's so doing the right things for it.

    Madonna (1983)
    Like a Virgin (1984)
    True Blue (1986)
    Like a Prayer (1989)
    Erotica (1992)
    Bedtime Stories (1994)
    Ray of Light (1998)
    Music (2000)
    American Life (2003)
Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005)
    Hard Candy (2008)
    MDNA (2012)
    Rebel Heart (2015)
    Madame X (2019)
Which of those albums do you think were the best of their respective year and if not, what other albums by other artists do you consider the best of the same year? Preferably in the pop genre or some comparable one (not metal or hip hop). You don't have to tell about all fourteen of course.
I for one will talk about Madame X and although it wasn't perfect, I can't think of another popular record that was better in 2019. MDNA on the other hand wasn't the best of 2012. I think Lana Del Rey's Born To Die or Red by Taylor Swift captured the sound of that year much better than the others. And 2008 I think was the year of Coldplay's Viva La Vida way more than Hard Candy's.

Born To Die captured the feeling of the decade. Some of the songs on the album just resonate so much with the current state of mental health, the shift in what is considered beautiful, fashion, the way emotions and art are portrayed.
    a total work of genius.

Before Madonna, I was fan of Communards (Bronsky Beat,  Jimmy Someville) so in my memories the best albums were:
Like A Virgin (1984) --> Bronski Beat- The Age Of Consent
True Blue (1986) --> The Communards - The Communards.
    Who's That Girl (1987) --> The Communards - Red
Like a Prayer (1989) --> Jimmy Somerville - Read My Lips
Bedtime Stories (1994) --> The best of Jimmy Somerville.
I'm sorry. Since I was a little boy I've always hated to buy full albums. I always bought singles and maxisingles. And thanks to singles and remixes, I started to love Madonna with passion in 1989.

I have huge respect for older Madonna fans. They made her rich, made her who she is, gave her songs and albums the impact they deserved. But of course they are prone to getting sentimental and not being the best judges of her. I don't think for example that Vogue as a song is objectively her best or second best single even. Only that it's a great song that had big impact and made them proud to be gay when they were young or whatever. And most of her new singles can't really be worse than Hanky Panky. But apparently it's easier for them to forgive her light-headedness when she sells dozens of millions of records rather than now when she doesn't and they probably hate all modern sounding music and probably themselves. She could release the next Frozen today and still it wouldn't crack their top 20. But as I've said before it's Madonna with her great singles, so every damn ranking has got to be right. It would be great though if we saw something different for a change- I feel like those rankings are always the same... Probably because they are from people who would rather hear some rusty underdeveloped demos from her olden days, when they were happy and thriving, than any new note from her.

Bedtime stories (same as Music, wonderful songs in it though. Also because I find the whole genre too boring for a full record)
