me1981 got a reaction from into the erotico in No hating but...what happened to Madonna after 2007?
When Molly Meldrum announced (a little too early) that Madonna was going to tour Australia in 2009 on the second leg of her S&S tour, he let slip that Guy Ritchie basically wanted her to look a certain way, keep her hair a certain length, dress a certain way and she couldn't tour long periods of time because he didn't like it. It was classic Molly running his mouth off, but it revealed so much about that union.
How would he know? I hear you ask. Molly finds out everything about everyone. Let's face it, she has never said a bad word about Sean Penn or Carlos (two of the other long term relationships she had) but she seemed so angry at Guy.
I think when you have been in a controlling marriage and get out, you go a bit crazy with freedom. I also think you tend to close yourself off from everything and put yourself in a bubble more and more. She rarely goes out unless it is work. I remember her saying that she didn't want to be Elvis or MJ, shut off from the world, but that is where she has landed.
When she said Pharell made her cry in the studio and later that she had to chase after Diplo to get him in the studio, I thought, who is this woman, what happened? This is not Madonna. She would never put up with that bull in the past. NEVER
I don't think Guy O is the problem in the way others do, I think he is just whipped and does whatever Madonna wants, even if it isn't what is best for her career. He really seems more like a business manager, his main goals are get to #1, no matter the cost. Anyone see her attitude towards him when they celebrated MDNA going to #1, like she wanted to kill him, and I am not joking, she seemed pissed off.
Lastly her attitude has changed. I'm sorry but crying censorship just because a venue cut you off, when you knew they would do that, when it was a business decision, a decision that was made clear to her, as it had been previously when she chose to ignore it and suffered similar consequences, well it is just odd. She made it seem like she was protesting about concentration camps in Auschwitz and being silenced. She never used to take herself that seriously before. It's just a pop show, as great as it is and as much joy as it is bringing to people. The world isn't going to end because you get cut off 5 min before your show is about to end.

Billboard published MTV's rotation list. Lucky Star was added in May on light rotation. So it wasn't promoted as a new single or competing with Borderline. It was likely due to the fact that the B-Side to the Borderline 12" was Lucky Star.
Madonna was heating up at this point and MTV likely was taking advantage of that, along with Sire/WB. Just remember on MTV Burning Up was played when Holiday was the single in release. Sire was really just throwing everything out there in the hopes something would help her cross over to mainstream success.
Also remember WB refused to release Into the Groove as a single but it didn't stop radio stations from ripping the audio from the music video and playing the song on radio until WB gave in and put out the Angel/Into the Groove 12"

So I also discovered MTV started playing Lucky Star in May 1984. It seems it was used originally as a promo video only due to the song being the B side to Borderline, again it seems Lucky Star was never supposed to be released in the US.

I don't think she has really been interested in making music since American Life tanked
Confessions was to try and get back her commercial success, it mostly worked everywhere but the US, so she did Hard Candy, a more R&B flavoured album with relatively hot US producers and that didn't get her commercial US success back either. Radio was done with her and it hurt her in a big way.
The next few years was more a result of her Live Nation deal, which she signed in the midst of a marriage that was falling apart. Working herself into the ground was probably an attractive prospect at that point, but I am certain she regretted it.
Then she brought Orbit back for MDNA, but I am convinced she had mostly given up and was nowhere near as involved in the making of that album as previous albums. She barely wanted to promote the album, spent more time on other projects and the tour and generally had a "i'm over it" vibe during the few interviews that we got.
I get the feeling with Rebel Heart she went into it wanting to do good work, but Diplo was all wrong for her and she had lost her mojo, you can see it in some of the interviews where she laments how making music has changed and how she had to chase after him to get the album completed. I do think she had high hopes and big plans, but it all went pear shaped during the promo.
I have no doubt if she hadn't left the US and been inspired by the music scene overseas, Madam X would have never happened, she pretty much said this at the time. I'd be shocked if we got much new music in the future. I think like Madam X, she will need to be inspired to write and record, I honestly don't see it happening.

Borderline was filmed around Feb 12. We have BTS footage with the clapper board that show she is on set Feb 12. Not sure where Jan 30 came from. Maybe Lucky Star was shot during those dates. I assume the confusion is from the Smash Hits interview where she is called up to return to do a music video and everyone has assumed it was Borderline.

Nope, it aired on MTV for the first time on March 25, 1984 and aired on Top of the Pops March 29, 1984. She likely shot the video right after her London promo trip in January. Likely why it comes across as basically a live performance similar to what she had been doing around that time with the same outfits.
One Sire or WB exec said Lucky Star was never supposed to be a single in the US, but Madonna got sued for the first time and they convinced her to release it to make some quick money, and MTV in May 84 started playing the video on light rotation along with Borderline. The video caught steam and Sire released a plain sleeve 7", basically spending little to no money on it.
Borderline was only released as one Sire/WB exec wanted to show the more serious/Adult contemporary side of her. It was the planned single from at least Nov or Dec 83 as the George Holz photoshoot (the one used on the re-released First Album) which was actually shot in Dec 83 for the Borderline cover and an upcoming Interview Magazine piece on her.

The timeline of events would suggest this was not the case
Dec 94 - Madonna writes a long ass letter to Alan Parker asking to be considered for the role of Evita
Jan/Feb 95 - Talks were most likely in place, Liz Smith even stated Madonna might not tour and that was the reason for the Euro promo tour
Mar 95 - Madonna is announced as Evita. She tells Kurt Loder at the MTV Pajama Party that she probably won't tour now she has to focus on Evita. I think this may have been the point when her management tried to convince her to do a smaller scale tour.
May 95 - Films the Human Nature video and states during the Making Of, that she won't be touring, instead focusing on Evita.
So it seems unlikely the tour opener with Human Nature in the squares was ever a thing. By the time they put the video together she had already decided to not tour.
Another interesting fact - Apparently Jean-Baptiste didn't want to deal with heavy choreography for the Human Nature video, so he put everyone in the squares. So he didn't need to worry about complicated set ups. Makes me wonder if there were other concepts for the video before he came on board.

I hope Bad Girl is always there too. If it relies solely on having Mercy at the Piano, I do wonder if it was meant to be permanent or not. I assume she isn't going to be playing all shows???
Maybe someone else will play the piano in her place.

So she confirmed she was at death's door, that was emotional to hear. Made me glad for this show much more.
I do think she could scrap some of the mashups/medley's and replace with a few classics and this would be an even stronger show
Also first tour without new music/an album to support
