  4. April 8, 2003: American Life It is the titular track from Madonna's ninth studio album American Life and was released as the lead single from the album. http://madonnaextreme.blogspot.com/2016/04/april-8-2003-american-life-it-is.html?m=1 The lead-off single and title track of American Life was released on April 8th (US) / 14th (Europe) 2003. The song premiered on radio worldwide on March 24th, the same day that it was sent out as official 'digital single' by mail to (American) fans who purchased the MP3 on Madonna's official website. But the Americans didn't turn out grateful for this exclusive, and instead slagged her off for her criticism; the single didn't get higher than a poor #37 in the US Hot 100. This in contrast with the top 10 success elsewhere: #1 in Canada, Japan, Italy; #2 in the UK (only 'Make Luv' by Room 5 did better); #7 in Australia and #10 in France. It also topped the Hot Dance / Club Play chart, making it her 29th dance hit. Remixes of the song were made by Missy Elliott, Peter Rauhofer, Felix da Housecat and Paul Oakenfold. The much talked about video was shot on February 6th and 7th, 2003 in LA by Swedish director Jonas Åkerlund. It continues Madonna's line-up of controversial videos. While she made sexually explicit videos in the 80s and especially the 90s, she started giving a message on violence with her What It Feels Like For A Girl and Die Another Day videos. For American Life, she takes it one step further. While the song lyrics talk about the price of fame, the video is clearly referring to Bush's attack on Iraq. It starts off with a fashion show, with sexy models showing off army fatigues. A touching moment is when the models make room for a small innocent Iraqi child... Meanwhile Madonna is seen as a sexy army general with her female army buddies. trapped in toilet cubicles, you can see the fear on the faces of the soldiers, which seems to refer to the soldier's side of the story. But when the adrenaline starts running, they're ready for the fight and they kick their way out in a sexy dance routine. The music cuts in a scene which resembles the What It Feels Like For A Girl video. The girls jump into a Mini Cooper and crash into the catwalk. While the audience is watching in amazement, Madonna hoses down the paparazzies with a water cannon. From there itclimbs to a climax with fast-moving war images until Madonna throws a hand grenade which is caught by... a president Bush lookalike, who transforms the grenade into a lighter to light his cigar. As soon as the storyline of the video leaked to the press, it rained criticism again. It went even so far, that Madonna felt it necessary to issue a statement: "I feel lucky to be an American citizen for many reasons - one of which is the right to express myself freely, especially in my work. I understand that there have been reports about my upcoming video American Life in the media - much of which is inaccurate. I am not Anti-Bush. I am not pro-Iraq. I am pro Peace. I have written a song and created a video which expresses my feelings about our culture and values and the illusions of what many people believe is the American dream - the perfect life. As an artist, I hope that this provokes thought and dialogue. I don't expect everyone to agree with my point of view. I am grateful to have the freedom to express these feelings and that's how I honor my country." Unfortunately, Madonna seemed to have changed her mind on that "freedom of speech": on April 1st, one day after the video was first shown on a few music channels, Madonna pulled the video: "I have decided not to release my new video. It was filmed before the war started and I do not believe it is appropriate to air it at this time. Due to the volatile state of the world and out of sensitivity and respect to the armed forces, who I support and pray for, I do not want to risk offending anyone who might misinterpret the meaning of this video." In the end, Madonna released an edited version, which is much weaker than the original: it only contains the footage of Madonna as general, but this time dancing in front of flags instead of flames and war images.
  5. On this Day: April 06, 1984 Borderline" enters the Billboard singles chart. In this love song Madonna asks her boyfriend to make up his mind, because she's crazy in love with him. The fans were crazy about the song too, because Madonna scored her first US top 10 hit when she released Borderline in 1984. It would also become her first Gold certification. In the UK at first it only got to #56, but after the first album was re-issued in 1985, Borderline re-entered the singles chart in January 1986 and made it to #2 (only to be blocked from #1 by Billy Ocean's 'When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going'). 8. Pedro Almodovar Talks Madonna & Oscars http://thefilmexperience.net/blog/2020/4/2/todays-must-read-pedro-almodovar-talks-madonna-and-oscars.html Today's Must Read: Pedro Almodóvar talks Madonna and Oscars Thursday, April 2, 2020 at 12:00PM by Nathaniel R Pedro quarantined and tripping through memory lane. You can keep all those celebrity sing-alongs or other social media attempts to cheer us up collectively. Instead give us gossip to chew on. More juicy shared "diaries" of stir-crazy stars, please! The occassion for this request is that we've just finished reading a new article by Spanish genius Pedro Almodóvar. He wrote a piece for the Spanish website el diario about... well, a lot of things. It begins with memories of getting dressed up to go on an errand during quarantine and segueways into other memories of getting dressed up for movie events. Lots of fun anecdotes follow including a night with Jane Fonda (!). But the bulk of the piece centers on 1990-1991 when Madonna entered his life via Dick Tracy through the essential documentary Truth or Dare (1991). You must read the whole thing -- Spanish readers will probably enjoy it most but the rest of us will have to suffer through a google translation. I've excerpted the Dick Tracy story after the jump... The day after the [Oscar] ceremony, in the morning, a female voice calls me to the hotel. She says to me, as if she was not aware of its impact, but sure that her voice was going to impact me, "Hello, I'm Madonna, I'm shooting Dick Tracy and I'd love to show you the set. Today I 'm not shooting and I can dedicate the day to you." It could be a false Madonna, or a psychopath who thought to cut me up in one of those fields that James Ellroy describes so well in his novels (if you read The Black Dahlia you will know what I mean. You can also see the movie that my beloved Brian de Palma shot about the book with Scarlett Johanson and Hilary Swank, but the truth is that it did not go very well. For the quarantine it is not bad, but before I would recommend many others, from De Palma himself: Sisters, Phantom of the Paradise, Carlito's Way, Body Double with Melanie Griffith at the peak of her career and thin as a reed, and above all Scarface with Pacino. Go from The Black Dahlia and make a cycle with all these films, you will thank me. All jewels, super accessible and super fun, in the end I will make you a list of recommendations. Going back to the Madonna call. It could be someone who was playing a joke on me, but my self-esteem, despite not winning the Oscar, was high enough not to doubt the authenticity. Madonna's voice gave me the address of the studio where they filmed, and I introduced myself there, happy as castanets. The truth is that the entire team, from Warren Beatty himself to [cinematographer Vittoria] Storaro, couldn't have been more kind to me. They treated me like I was George Cukor. Beatty forced me to sit in the chair that put his name, in the director's place, to watch the filming of the sequence they were shooting. I was about to confess to him that when I was a child I discovered my sexuality when I saw him in Splendor in the grass (there was no mason of Pain and Glory), but I kept it to myself, of course. They were filming a sequence in which unrecognizable Al Pacino chattered non-stop. For that performance, he earned an Oscar nomination the following year, and the film earned three statuettes. With Madonna I toured all the sets and met someone I greatly admired, Milena Canonero, the costume designer who had already won three Oscars (for Dick Tracy she would be nominated the following year) for Chariots of Fire, Barry Lyndon and Cotton Club [sic*] -- the three films are recommended for coping with quarantine. My favorite is Barry Lyndon from Kubrick. Milena Canonero would still win a fourth Oscar, I don't remember now which movie. Visiting the workshop where Canonero worked was probably what most impressed me about the visit, it would have been the only reason I would have liked to work in Hollywood: the obsession with details. One of the characteristics of Dick Tracy , the comic book character, is his yellow hat. Milena was obsessed with getting that yellow that one saw in the drawing of the comic. She showed me over two hundred hats in which the only difference was a subtle change in color. I totally identified with that detail obsession. As far as I am concerned I do the same thing when I roll, I don't know how to work any other way (but I do know how to work with much less money). If Madonna calls you and goes out of her way the day after you didn't win an Oscar, that means that the material girl has a huge interest in you. It was not long before we met again the following year on the occasion of her Blonde Ambition Tour... Pedro & Madonna at the party documented in "Truth or Dare" The following story gives you more Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, and Antonio Banderas anecdotes. A great read. Thank you to Iggy for sending us this photo of Pedro being interviewed on Spanish TV (where he mentions this article). Look you can see his BAFTA, Golden Lion and both his Oscars on the top shelf behind him! * Almodóvar had his Oscar trivia wrong there. Canonero had actually only won two Oscars at that point and had not even been nominated for The Cotton Club (though she won the BAFTA for that). After Barry Lyndon and Chariots of Fire there was a long drought before she won twice more for Marie Antoinette and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

  11. So I finally saw the Madame X show last night. As titled, the show shares the journey and experiences of Madame X as well as the current state of the world we live in. Before I comment further on the show, I must say I absolutely love the pre show live music by the 4 member band, which performed several Madonna tracks - Secret, DTM, WTG, LAV. They sound brilliant. Seeing the show live - which is visually stunning - I can understand the songs selected for the setlist. Note: Don’t worry. I’m not gonna go through each performance in the setlist. She started the show literally with a bang - God Control. Then she performed Dark Ballet which ended with her being put into a round box space. It then seamlessly flowed in to Human Nature with her executing gorgeous choreography ala the Human Nature video. Those who thought her previous tours were too political might find offense in the first section alone which she throws in your face strong poignant political commentary. No one should take away our human rights and our right to live. We will not be silenced. We will speak and fight for our rights. Her PDP performance shows her stand against those trying to overthrow Roe Vs Wade and her fight for equal rights for women. She ended the section fittingly with American Life - “nothing is what it seems”. Side note: that AL bass is LIFE. The second section is exactly as she introduced to us - her life and new music inspiration and appreciation in Lisbon. Beginning with Fado music. This section is a massive hit if you love the Mx album and a sore miss if you’re not a fan of the album. That said, I find this section the most broadway-esque if that makes sense. The last section for me is about being freedom fighters craving for a brighter future despite obstacles and hardened people who want to take away our democracy. And she ended the show fading out with “We Will Rise” as she disappeared into the main exit of the theater behind the audience with her performers. To sum up, this is a dream show for me in that it is an intimate, highly choreographed yet spontaneous, visually stunning and artistic theatrical performance. Is it perfect? No. But its imperfections make it perfect for me if that makes any sense. Bitches, I absolutely love the show!
