EROTICA is underrated

Okay, then.

The album is a masterpiece, yes, you could say "omg masterpiece" in this year. But, when Madonna released it, the album was considered as a "taboo". Why? because is a woman, the machist was in the top in those years.

But if the album, is being released in this decade, obviously it will be considered as revolutionary. But Lamentaly, Christian groups, Mad parents and the censores, did it again against Madonna in those years. :/

My final point is, yes, Erotica is underrated, but still a masterpiece.

I don't think it is underrated. It got a lot of acclaim, and still remains a favourite amongst fans. Its only problem was that it got caught up in the Sex book furore which didn't do it great favours. For me, as a fan from the early days, its her number one album. I love it

In my opinion, if there's an underrated Madonna album it is Bedtime Stories.

This.

Her most overlooked album ever together with Rebel Heart.

Both in my top 3, I must have a soft spot for underrated albums :04:

Erotica slowly got the acclaim, praise and analysis it deserved and I'm happy for it, such a groundbreaking era, as I've stated earlier in this thread :cute:

Sorry, I just don't agree it's among the "greatest albums of all time", nor do I think it's "superb".  Lyrically, she went somewhere with it, I'll give her that.  I also agree she made some bold moves with this album (for the time).  There are some very unique and good songs on the album.  I wouldn't I consider it a  " superb pop" album either when most of the songs are modern house, classic disco, techno and new jack swing. Personally, I feel the album is a bit boring and long in the tooth.

Agree with both your posts but I DO think the album is superb. Musically it is fantastic and one of her best along with LAP and ROL.

It got a lot of praise lately. It deserves it.

A masterpiece that couldn't be defined as pure pop music. It is a brilliant mix of different genres and some trends at the time (hip hop, new jack swing, house), but it wasn't trend following at all which shows how Madonna can be so great. The result is a unique record.

If media makes list of best albums, it definitely deserves its spot for so many reasons. Madonna made so many great albums and that is a fact. It is silly that she is always represented with one album while bands like The Beatles have like 5 albums on the list. And it isn't just a problem for Madonna, but for other female artists too.

Finally someone who I 100% agree with regarding this album. I also find that the fanbase is overrating it A LOT in recent times because they think it didn't get the acclaim it deserved...

Can't speak for everybody but I genuinely adore this album, nothing to do with it not getting acclaim when it was released. I love every single track, I listen to it more than any other album of hers by far. Different strokes for different folks - it's quite simple :) .

A huge deception this album. I hate this album, all the photographs, the cover and most of all songs of the album.

Shep Pettibone has a better job for Vogue and Rescue Me, two very goods songs. And this album, huge deception. I hate Erotica (the title-track), this song is mess and i not like most of all songs of the album. Only two songs was good on this album (and the two was a single). The first is Rain (my favorite), this song was beautiful in the arrangements and i like the darker ambiance ballad of this song. The video was also a art, beautiful and i love the look on this video. The second was Deeper and Deeper, the disco/latino influenced was find for this song and i listen this with a good pleasure this song. I like well the lyrics of In this life, very sad and touching (about the lost of his friends of AIDS), but the music was not the better choice of this song, same thing with Why's it so hard.

I'm not difficult at the base, i'm a huge fan of the albums Ray of Light, True Blue and Confessions on a dance Floor, and i like many songs of others albums. but this, i listen many times, but nothing, i hate this album. I sold this CD and i never re-buy this CD since, because of my huge deception.

Where Life Begins was very better in instrumentals, the Madonna performance destroys the beauty of the music of this song. The instrumentals of this song was online in Youtube and with the Bett's production of the three songs of the album, this song was the better sound music and i like better the instrumental, better and better without the Madonna voice,

Erotica was very boundary breaking and progressive when it was released in 1992. Madonna did introduce a new sound which fitted right in with the emerging Grunge, Trip Hop and Indie sounds of that era.

I'd really like to see Erotica reach the top of the charts again.

It was 2015 and I was just getting my Madonna journey started from Rebel Heart down to her debut album. When I got to Erotica, it was ENTIRELY different. It gave me whiplash and at the same time, the entire album became my entire life as I slowly come to terms with my sexuality. To this day, anyone can make an Erotica album but never as iconic or as genius as the original. Just by the production alone, the themes it tackles, the infamous SEX book and the music videos in this era are just my favorite. Not to mention, the looks she kept giving.

Erotica is a masterpiece damned by time, burned by people and shamed by the media yet rediscovered by the new generations of fans who saw it, still alive and buried under the ashes of tabloids and newspapers.

It’s one of her best works ever and one of my most favorite albums of all time. I think the al I’m does have some skips, but it’s definitely an outstanding work as a whole package. She presented a completely new sound for her and a new provocative image. The outlook of the album was in-your-face sex, bordering pornography but the lyrics and meaning were so poetic and way deeper than the impression the aesthetic gives.

It doesn’t get mentioned as much as it should and it needs more recognition, despite it being positively regarded by fans. The Girlie Show was incredible even though it’s really sad that she didn’t include more album tracks in it. The music videos are amazing and SEX book was something no artist will ever match in terms of audacity and impact.

My favorite tracks are: Bad Girl, Why’s It So Hard, Erotica, Rain, Fever, In This Life and Thief of Hearts.

When this album was released, the US was very conservative and stingy and narrow-minded (still is). This album was taboo and forbidden and didn't get a lot of praise when it first came out. Personally, it's my favorite album, and the only tracks I skip are "Rain" (never really understood the love for this song) and "Did You Do It?" The rest of the album is easygoing all the way for me.

Now, if it had been released in this day and age, it would be considered pretty tame against these smutty young pop artists such as Beyoncé and Britney Spears. Ironically, Madge paved the way for these artists, and as we all know, Madonna can be smutty in her own way - but in an artistic light.

As she said in the "Truth or Dare" documentary: "Where else am I nasty?" :Madonna049:

Resurrecting this thread to say that Erotica is the blueprint for the female pop star of 2020.

When I was watching Doja Cat's new video the other day Kiss Me More it dawned on me how sexual they all are now... and it's not really a thing.  Her song is all about oral sex... very similar to Where Life Begins albeit a more catchy version. And they're played on radio, they're celebrated at the Grammys, and for the most part not reduced to a single personality trait for making sexual music.

I feel like Erotica should be recognized as the jump off point it is.
