Obviously you're entitled to your opinion, but Sex and Erotica were and are still her most daring works.  I was floored as a 15 year old fan at the time, and I STILL think that this was Madonna at her absolute peak.  ROL is very close, and I would say the logical re-invention of her career post-Sex, but as incredible as that era is, it's still not as groundbreaking as the fall of 1992.  What an amazing time to be a fan it was.

her re- invention was 'Bedtime Stories' ; to me it feels like the b-side of the whole 'Erotica' album. She needed to be mor soft and feminine.

Also thanks to Madonna making Pop female artist as something with a empowering sexuality we arrived to where we are today.

It was always about cute pop singers or uber sexual artist, designed for men.

this reminds me of artists like Donna Summer, her image and how she was marketed  seemed it was tailor-made for men by SWMs , there was nothing about her that felt she was in power at all , funny that the album versions were not the same as the radio edits too, it was all like bait

it was also a bit difficult to even be a M fan back then, people would just throw insults at ya and being extremely dismissive about the whole thing ; all in all,  it may sound silly but it felt like you were "a true fan" for staying throughout the era and beyond -in away-:heart::lord:

My gripe with the book and even M herself acknowledged this later - was that it overshadowed the erotica album and the singles that followed it - she did amazing videos too that were ignored ( bad girl and rain ) both of which didn’t even make the top 10 - bad girl at the time stalled at 36 I believe her worst charting single in the US - I don’t think even M realised the fuss this book was going to cause and the negative reaction she got and you can’t say it didn’t harm her record sales because it did - erotica and bedtime stories barely sold  over 5 million copies each worldwide by the end of the 90s ...

Madonna first albums were a cute rebel teen, with Erotica she started exploring and experimenting, that show a softer sensual side too with Bedtime stories, Something to remember. She had the adulthood challenge with Evita and she came out as and mature strong woman with the Veronica electronica triad (ROL, Music, American)

It was a natural process of growing up. If Madonna made another Like a prayer she would'nt be where she is today.

Also the relationship with this book is gonna be based in your own personal experience.

For me when it came out and I was a queer teen in some small town. My sexual preferences were a big element of how I feel about the world and my struggles to see how and where I fit. Society imposed you to question and made it an important side of your life and everything you do.

That one of your references and inspirations, come out with a book where sexuality is shown as something else, natural, personal, open. Was such an empowerment and relief for me.

And I know lots of queer kids at the time that felt that way too. It was'nt about being into sex, but into don't making sexuality a tag to describe you. it was'nt sinful or unnatural.

I loathe the book. I dunno if it's because I'm not really into artsy/avant-garde stuff, or because I don't appreciate contrived publicity stunts that revolve around "sexual freedom", but I think the book is dreadful overall. I've seen most of the pictures and there's nothing in there that "wows" me. It's just so by-the-numbers and shallow, and I hate that it pretty much derailed the Erotica era.

At the end of the day it was basically glorified pornography, except I didn't get a hard-on.

Perhaps she should have released the album and first few videos/singles from the album before people even knew about the book, I wonder if the album would have been more critically acclaimed at the time and not be overshadowed by it

Then again October 1992 the hype around Madonna and these projects was insane and the appetite in the media to cover it after Blond Ambition, Truth or Dare , Immaculate Collation, League of their own etc   - she was everywhere, when she flew into London for 24 hours she was on the front page of every paper arriving at her hotel in London just for visiting to do an interview but the media and public soon turned on her a was a publicity overkill. But agree the disappointment was that Erotica got slated by critics because os Sex book was released at the same time and reflected the media turning against her and just slating her every move and trying to turn her into a laughing stock too
