It's Black History Month. And Black History is American History.

Let's post about Black History intersected with Madonna. People who have influenced her, performances that focused on social justice, artists that she has worked/collaborated with, Lyrics , Songs, Videos... Anything related.

I'll start.

Although this song comes off like a B-Side on the record, it's performance at The Girlie Show really shines as a statement piece.

I Am Because We Are is a 2008 documentary film about AIDS orphans in Malawi. It was directed by Nathan Rissman and written, narrated, and produced by Madonna through her production company Semtex Films.

The film premiered at the 7th annual Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, on April 24, 2008, and at the 61st annual Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France, on May 21, 2008. The film also headlined the 2008 Traverse City Film Festival. On December 1, 2008, it premiered in the U.S. on the Sundance Channel for World AIDS Day.

I Am Because We Are depicts a journey in the second poorest country in the world, Malawi. In a country of 12 million people, so many children without parents has caused irreparable damage. The film attempts to explore what is going on in the heads and hearts of these orphans, and what the future holds for them. Suffering from AIDS, infections and malnutrition, most of the children in Malawi are in need for food, medical care, but also for proper education and guidance. More than just a story about Malawi, I Am Because We Are provides the audience with keys to help changing the situation but also spreads hope for a better world.

I think this is the one thing that has touched me the most with her adoptions and helping Malawi the she has...and it will only continue long after she's gone. She doesn't get enough credit for all she's done.

Released March 1989- Like a Prayer Video

Featuring a black Jesus, an all black gospel choir, an interracial kiss which was still a taboo in 1989, and a storyline of a criminal justice system that assumes guilt for POC Madonna released possibly her most popular song of all time.

Yes, that was a turning point for Madonna, wasn't it? With this she became more political and made society confront itself with all it's taboos, social and cultural.

I think she started her career directly with a "turning point". Many believed at the time that her first single was sung by a black singer - and she didn't see that as a flaw, but felt it represented her. What ambitious female white pop singer dared to use such a cover to go public for the first time and launch her career? From the beginning, she had more balls and courage than most.

I've just noticed Secret Garden from Erotica pays tribute to The Secret Garden (Sweet Seduction Suite) by Quincy Jones feat. Barry White, Al B. Sure!, James Ingram and El DeBarge, released in 1990. In particular, Madonna's singing style is clearly based on Barry's one (who doesn't love his voice?) and even both arrangements are similar, although her version is more minimal. Finally, the lyrics are about the same topic and they use the same metaphor of the secret garden: Because tonight I want you/to learn all about/the secrets in your garden.
