Question about Drowned World Tour Lights

Random question; something that stands out to me in my memory of The Drowned World Tour, specifically Drowned World/Substitute for Love, is actual people controlling the spotlights that hung over the crowd. They were like sitting in a chair attached to the light and were randomly directing them at the audience. Do you guys remember that? Do you know why she had people controlling the lights instead of computers? and did they stay up there for the whole show or was it just the first song? or did I make this up?

I actually work in stage production, so I can tell you that it is very common to have 3-4 spotlights that are hand controlled in a show. This is so that the light will be on her no matter what, so that she can move around through the audience or on the stage and always be lit up.
