Madonna's 18 year long mea culpa for the SEX book

I've been a fan for 23 years and my Madonna opinions have changed throughout the years, I see now things that I didn't before, and my favorite period is of course, the Erotica era and 20 years ago I naturally followed her narrative of nobody getting it, that she was badly attacked, etc.

Now I realize that a) there was nothing to get, and b) all the criticisms she got were genuine and not misoginistic. For starters she was being genuinely transgressive. The SEX book would have been controversial even if a man had done it, hence why no one ever has. What she should have done was taken the Marilyn Manson route and not give a fuck and just keep going.

Instead we have her writing whiny letters, whining in interviews, teary eyed in many, making soft albums, dressing like a school marm for 20 years, until 2008 when 50 hit her and she was desperate to be Dita again.

Makes me realize that SEX, as much as I love it, was not a genuine artistic endeavour. It was more like "Justify My Love went to number 1 and being banned has translated into success for me so I'll do it" and then she couldn't take the heat.

I wonder if she even had PTSD in 94/95, she genuinely looks massively depressed and mentally ill.

I also wonder, as much as I love Erotica/SEX/Girlie Show, why do they feel "off"?? half baked. They are not perfect like Like A Prayer/Blond Ambition are perfect.

Then I heard genius Camille Paglia's comments on her writings on the SEX book and she said that it "needed work", and maybe it did, maybe it was all too rushed. For instance, I have proven that the non single Erotica tracks should never have seen the light of day. Hear for yourselves:

In the Girlie Show In this Life and Like A Virgin are total downers. Holiday is a problem too.

Anyway would like to hear opinions on why Erotica era isn't flawless like the 80's.

Also, the same thing happened again with American Life, she recovered chutzpah thought she was invinvi le again and couldn't take the floppage. That's not what a true artist does.

But she’d spent x amount of years being told to stop acting like a slut, you’ve gone to far, we won’t buy your product anymore while you behave that way-even though she wasn’t acting like a slut-so she puts out a book where she is acting that way and boom! It’s a best seller and everyone wants a copy. It was a masterclass in showing peoples hypocrisy.

that's her narrative, it's not actually what happened.

This is gonna rattle some folks and those are the topics I come here for.

I LOVE the imagery from that era. It still looks fresh.

The writing in the Sex Book is cringe as fuck. Ironic, tongue in cheek, whatever. It's bad.

I love all the singles and videos except "Bye Bye Baby". Would have taken "Thief of Hearts", "Words" and "Waiting" over it. Maybe I just need to hear a modern mix of it. The instrumental and remixes sound cheap to me. The performance on the Girlie Show is good. The MTV Awards was a big missed opportunity to do something truly shocking and memorable for that era.

I love '94/'95 M though lol. Just perfection.

Oh and this part "Now I realize that a) there was nothing to get, and b) all the criticisms she got were genuine and not misoginistic" is how I feel about the current era dddddd. *hides*

dude I couldnt disagree more even among non-fans like my brother they say that the sex book is her magnum opus.

Its considered by art dealers as the most important pop manifesto from a woman point of view.

Do you know any other coffee table book that reached the status of high art?

It shaked the world upside down to this day.

Absolutely NO REGRETS.

you are not a fan - you know nothing or very ver little about her.

sorry(cant take it anymore)sorry

please give me a break, I have lost total respect for any art world authority or media pundit, their opinions are meaningless to me but literally nobody believes the sex book is high art or a magnum opus.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATT?

I wonder if she even had PTSD in 94/95, she genuinely looks massively depressed and mentally ill.

what makes you believe if that happened that it was caused by the sex book/erotica age/criticism?

Then I heard genius Camille Paglia's

well she can be a genius to you Id rather stay with Judith Butler. For the most of us here

I assume I may be exaggerating but i'm not exactly wrong _ I dont agree that Paglia is able to say anything

important about her. Sorry not Sorry.

This forum needs desperate moderation. Now

I feel that way about this era too, she honestly sounds SO INFANTILE now. I don't read the SEX book anymore because the writing is really bad, that's what Camille said that needed work, I do love the Johnny letters, but she had to include a mention of lesbotron Ingrid and it just kills everything.

Having said that, the imagery of the SEX book is the most influential imagery of the last 30 years. It can't be said that it was totally original but it brought GAY pornography to the mainstream and we have been saturated in it for the last three decades. And it wasn't just S&M, it was specifically gay S&M.

I like it but at the same time it pisses me off. Like what is this?

This is 100% gay and 100% the SEX book, it wouldn't have gotten into the mainstream if it wasn't for Madonna but I hate it for several reasons:

a) Madonna is not being credited

b) People died from this lifestyle whether by violence or aids when Jeremy Scott was still pretending to be straight.

c) I don't think children or normies need to be exposed to this.

Judith Butler gender theorist?? no thank you.

What you are asking for is CENSORSHIP, not moderation. Get the hell out of here.

Just ignore mysweetaudrina, they are just trolling. First Confessions, now Sex. They like stirring the pot. Next they'll have a topic about how the new Frozen remixes are much better than the original. Drag Race Drama GIF by RuPaul's Drag Race

Fr tho, seems like one of those people who always have unpopular opinions only so they can say to be factually edgy and always far ahead the others, next topic will be "MDNA deserved Album Of The Year" or sum, lol

They will try to convince you that MDNA did win it, but all the websites and Wikipedia pages are wrong and unreliable. It was a massive success in their country, unlike Confessions.

The first stir was that M's Eurovision vocals were exactly the same as any of her other performance ?

I don't know about the children and normies, but I was 7 when the Sex Book came out and got my entire life. And doing it at the height of AIDS, the biggest pop star putting out something that fit in perfectly alongside Robyn Bird and all the underground Manhattan public access was amazing to me. And Moschino rips everyone off. At least they send M free frocks?

This has NOTHING to do with Madonna, and EVERYTHING to do with Tom of Finland.

Madonna most certainly doesn't get to get any credit for gay leather BDSM imagery.
