Madonna became very famous with Like a Virgin and Material Girl, but she was still a girl with two albums, only one very successful.

She became an undeniable superstar with True Blue.

agree, but the Virgin Tour and the hype around it with all the wannabe(s) did it IMO.

yes, she was a superstar to the teens... but still, a girl with a few recent hits and The Virgin Tour was limited to the US.

With True Blue came a massive change in the image, the lyrics, the sound... that's what made her the Madonna we know now.

as I saw then (and lived it )  it was like she was kind of a local star in NYC by mid 1983 already , by  early 1984 she was known in the whole country and  when LAV dropped she became a massive superstar not only in America but WW , the amount of attention she got from it was insane , you just had to be there and travel outside of the country to get the full idea of how huge she got

Madonna’s career has not evolved in the same way across countries.
Its inking point in the US was made with the album LIKE A VIRGIN, the rest of the world with TRUE BLUE.
Before that she was considered a successful singer but without suspecting that such a career would take place before her feet.

Why LOVE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE is a reference for you@Rosita The chihuahua ?
This re-reading was not a huge success compared to other iconic titles.

By the summer of 1985, she was at Superstar status, especially in the U.S., and by the time she released True Blue she became a Global Superstar. 1985 was a pivotal year for her, where she was going global.  Even her first album singles were getting re-releases in parts of the world.  By 1987, she was considered Mega-star and right up there with the  likes of Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, and Tina Turner. By 1990, it's safe to say she reached "iconic" status.
