Well record labels are businesses. Before the digital age, when records actually sold and you could make money off that, there was more capital to invest in new artists. There were the big hitters selling 10 million + records and the money record labels made off these high profile releases was invested in the development of emerging talents. It took bands like U2 or REM a few albums to achieve commercial success but they were given the time to grow, they would not stand a chance today. Why do you think The Voice, Idol and X-Factor are so popular? It's a win win for record labels - they get a winner who's already got exposure, who was groomed and trained and is all but ready for global stardom. Of course it doesn't work this way in practice as we have seen.

It's a nice sentiment to say that people only actually pay for music that has an emotional impact but that's a very subjective thing and I'm sure there's tons of music out there that you or I would be touched by (and willing to pay for) but that the wider audience will never be exposed to simply because those artists don't have the funds to promote themselves and record labels are too scared to invest in them. Sure, everyone's got access to the internet and can put stuff up on YouTube but for every Bieber (discovered online) there are millions or artists with great music that get lost in the sea of online crap. Of course artists should strive to be better etc but that also means they should be given time to experiment and grow. In the meantime they also need to eat. I work with a lot of musicians on a daily basis and I honestly couldn't live like that. Some of these people are more talented than the entire Top 20 put together but they play to 100 people and nobody will sign them.

It's a sign of the times I guess. In the end of the day Tidal is a service, like any other, it's not compulsory - nobody is forcing me, you or Marina (whose stuff is on it too by the way) to sign up and pay for it. The difference is it's owned by artists some of whom (like Jay Z, Madonna or Beyonce) have proven in their own careers that they're not only supremely creative and talented musically but that they are also great at the business side of things. It might make a difference. It might not. I'm glad to see someone trying. Either way the more competition in the market the better for us, the consumers. I don't see why this would make anyone feel uncomfortable.

Have we really reached a time where people think it is wrong to pay for music?
Do we really believe we are so self-entitled that everything should be handed to us for free?

Artists only make money off of shows now because no one has figured out a way to steal THAT yet.

If I'm making a living off of my paintings, and every time I finish one, does that mean someone can come into my studio and steal them, just because they feel they shouldn't have to pay for them?
The Internet had made thieves and self-righteous bitches out of all of us.

And I will pay for quality content.

Jay Z brought along some (very) famous and influential friends for this week's re-launch of Tidal, his high-fidelity music streaming service. The rapper's strategy to reach the most prospective subscribers began with a mysterious viral campaign, which saw artists with a combined 156 Twitter million followers change their avatars blue and declare #TIDALforALL in similar tweets.

Several big social gets for Jay Z in his rollout campaign include Alicia Keys (21.46 million Twitter followers), Coldplay (14.4 million), Nicki Minaj (19.1 million) andRihanna (43 million), respectively. Jay's wife Beyonce, who has 14 million followers but has not tweeted since August 2013, also blued-out her avatar, as didKanye West (11.8 million) and Usher (10.2 million). Most included the message "History will be made in 5 hours" and a 30-second promo for a live stream event.

Like clockwork, each artist also let their followers know when the event went live.

V‘s entertainment editor, Greg Krelenstein, breaks down all that makes Madonna‘s Rebel Heartgreat! Check it out this amazing review:

    http://drownedmadonna.com/madonnas-rebel-heart-is-one-of-the-most-challenging-and-ultimately-rewarding-records-of-her-career/20150324
Madonna’s “Rebel Heart†is one of the most challenging and ultimately rewarding records of her career.

March 10, 2015. A new album release from Madonna should feel like a global holiday—a celebration of innovative music, groundbreaking videos, boundary pushing fashion, memorable album artwork, and dance moves that could only belong to the one and only club crawling space cowboy spiritually seeking disco geisha latino loving queen of pop. In contrast, the saga leading up to Rebel Heart’s drop (in stores and online retailers today) has been well documented. A series of unfortunate leaks of an album’s worth of unfinished material, questionable Instagram posts featuring world leaders Photoshopped into the album’s artwork, and perhaps the biggest blow, her spill during her performance of the first single, “Living for Love,†at the Brit Awards, while wearing a now infamous tied too tight Armani cape. Despite the noise, nothing can distract from the fact that Madonna’s blonde ambition has always persevered through the controversy. And her 13th studio album, Rebel Heart, is one of the most challenging and ultimately rewarding records of her career.
Three decades in, she’s still sharp-tongued and in search of the party, but Rebel Heart reveals more vulnerability than she’s allowed since Like A Prayer. The temple and church of the devoted will recognize the familiar themes she continues to explore—sexual fantasy (“Body Shopâ€), lost and found love (“Heartbreak Cityâ€), salvation (“Devil Prayâ€), redemption (“Wash All Over Meâ€), and perhaps her most cohesive and powerful narrative, the triumphant and transcendent power of the dancefloor (“Living for Loveâ€). Nostalgia has never been Madonna’s thing, but on Rebel Heart, she takes a time out to reference some of her biggest hits and her rise to the top from the Lower East Side rock scene and vogue balls of the early ’90s with “Veni Vidi Vici†and “Holy Water.†

While those songs reference her past, the producers and collaborators that make up the album are on point and very much of the moment—an eclectic assembly of hitmakers and rising talents that include Diplo, Kanye West, Avicii, Ariel Rechtshaid, Blood Diamonds, Sophie, and DJ Dahi. There are also cameos from Nicki Minaj, Nas, Chance the Rapper and spoken word from none other than Mike Tyson.
While the various contributors provide a swinging pendulum of moods explored throughout the Deluxe Edition’s 19 tracks, it’s Madonna’s singular voice and vision that keeps it all together. Club bangerz with the word bitch in the title (“Unapologetic Bitch,†“Bitch I’m Madonnaâ€) give her an opportunity to shake it off, but it’s the ballad, “Ghosttown,†that serves as the album’s highlight. Singing about a cold, mad world that’s gone to hell, her message of love is one that should lift the spirits of even the most cynical and jaded, and deserves a spot in the canon next to “Live To Tell†and “Take a Bow.†

Though she has nothing to prove at this point, Rebel Heart can’t help but demonstrate that she’s remained on top with reinvention and determination, and by taking the “road less traveled onâ€â€”a path that continues to inspire and influence the current crop of pop starlets. Sure to please long term fans, who have undoubtedly already purchased their Gold Ring tickets to her upcoming arena tour, it deserves to inspire a new generation of girls and boys ready to get off the bus in the middle of Times Square with hopes to rule the world, like the Rebel Heart before them.

When all the demos first leaked and the idea of a double album was first suggested, I was all excited and 100% behind the idea of an album of two halves...CD1- Rebel (edgy, sexual, confrontational), CD2- Heart (heartfelt, confessional, traditional). But having lived with the official album for a few weeks and sitting through a mixed bag of emotions, I think they were correct to keep the album as a rollercoaster of emotions, themes and show the conflicting sides of Madonna...she is, after all, a complex mix of ping-ponging between emotions and her many sides exposed/hidden within a single heartbeat- vulnerability, strength, sadness, joy, provocative, solitary etc. Also, I think many of us would listen more to one CD more than the other...I would, if I'm honest, have played "Heart" more than "Rebel" and so Rebel would become tired very quickly...all one theme, but this way (and I always play an album in its intended sequence and never shuffle/skip) I have been exposed and begin to enjoy tracks like Unapologetic Bitch, Iconic, Holy Water, S.E.X. and Illuminati because they are surrounded by my favourite Heart tracks...which makes me begin to listen and grow to love those more Rebel tracks. So, for me, the erratic tracklisting works and makes me enjoy EVERY track instead of favoring a certain side.
