Hmm this is a bit short sighted. The handful of fans (looking at some of the steams when her team could be bothered to promote the digital maxis on Release Radar) were upward of quarter of a million people in the first week and that was just a single track. These are the people that tweet and repost and use in insta stories that keep her name out there on socials and increase her streaming numbers which lay a foundation for her next release. When you combine the totals of all the mixes that's decent revenue that will actually go someway in funding any planned re-releases production costs. It's good money for old rope especially if it can recoup some costs further down the line.

With a gap between projects of nearly six years now. That's the same time period in which LIKE A VIRGIN Nov 84 to THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION Nov 90 albums were released plus 26+ singles across the globe.

Little things like the maxis and few collabs she has thrown out have kept some fans holding on. Artists haemorrhage fans in their later years especially as it seems like the artist is slowing down.  So yes it seems like crumbs but it also reminds people what an amazing catalogue she has, lets new fans go discover her and keeps her legacy in motion.

and as for her teams competence in the last 15 years. Everything from the mastering on her actual records to the crazy leaks and the incorrect labelling of things on basic platforms. Is it a studio album or is it a maxi single. I mean ...it's pretty sloppy.

It’s pretty wild that they stopped promoting streaming releases to Release Radar.  It’s almost like they’re embarrassed of her back catalogue.  Although who knows maybe Spotify changed it so that only new music that’s never been released before can be added to that particular playlist?  I don’t have Spotify myself so I don’t know if it’s usual to see re-releases on there.

I think its because they were previously releasing the digital singles with a current release date (i.e. the date it was added to steaming), but lately they've reverted to adding them with their original release dates so they dont show up as 'new releases'. I don't know for a fact that this is the reason they dont show on release radar as new but that would be my guess.

This is indeed the reason.

We don't know if Spotify alerted them to not do so (putting new releases dates) or it was just to not have to take the effort to change the date to the original one later on.

Spotify don't want Madonna to have her own piece of cake of streaming popularity.

For what it's worth, I know U2, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Billie Piper, and S Club 7 have all re-released old singles this year with 2024 as the release year so it wasn't just Madonna.  Weird that she stopped.

Feel free to include Belinda Carlisle and Mariah in a way too

That was my guess after some time.

Truth be told, we did complain at the beggining, because we thought they were just not paying attention, and that the releases would be disorganized forever.

Once we realized there was method to that madness (lol), and there it served both to send a notification to the followers on Spotify + to send the Release Radar playlist, that it was working wonders for getting good streams for the releases, and they they were on it, and after a while they were correcting the release dates; at that point, we stopped complaining, and even started praising them lol.

What I imagined that happened for them to completely throw this strategy away was Spotify noticing what was going on, and giving her team some sort of alert that material was not actually new, and shouldn't be with songs that were.

Maybe they (Rhino) were just lazy once they saw they had many Madonna releases to have to update later. It's easier for them to send them with the original date and that's it.

Or maybe she herself complained, who knows.

In any case, it was a bad decision, she went from having 200.000-300.000 streams in the chosen track for Release Radar each week to have... 10.000? Terrible business.

It's Spotify doing, there's no other explanation. Rhino tried to give Madonna more exposure in streaming, however ultimately they were forbidden from their practices, because the label had to contact support to change release dates back to original ones everytime they put something.

But as someone commented above, other artists have been doing this same strategy for old releases during 2024, so I don't know if it was Spotify, really.

Agreed. The distributor adds the metadata to the release and that data is then used on all platforms.

But I'd still rather the release date be the original date (not the date it was added to streaming) so that her discography is in the right chronological order. As others have said, its really irritating to see singles in the albums section or appearing out of sequence within the singles section. Everybody, Rain, Lucky Star and Deeper and Deeper all still appear out of sequence based on the date they were added to streaming. Those dates need amending!

The official Madonna Facebook just posted:

”Happy 30th Anniversary, Bedtime Stories! 📖🎈
Yes, “we’ve got a secret”…. Check back soon to find out and in the meantime, play the album out loud: https://bit.ly/mbedtimestories “

Cue fan speculation about what’s coming. I’m guessing some new merch like t-shirts and maybe an expensive empty extra sleeve to go on our LPs.

Nice to see Madonna’s socials acknowledging her back catalogue anniversaries after we stopped seeing posts about the digital singles re-releases.

My two cents: I don't know but I think it's pretty obvious (and from my point of view quite understandable) that DAD was pulled because of the two recent deaths in M's family. The way it was done could have been handled better but I am sure it will be uploaded at a later date. Some tabloids/websites would have had a field day saying how callous/tone deaf  M was releasing the digital single at this time etc. Just my opinion!
