I’ve always found it highly unlikely that a little girl of five years old would harbour such hatred towards a woman who came in to the family house and created a home.

While I doubt she was at all evil, I believe that territoriality's real, even in kids, and especially towards 'a replacement mum'.

Don't forget that Madonna was the oldest female in the home at one point, and a rebellious, developing alpha one, at that.

Rest in peace, dear Joan. Thank you for making Madonna's father so happy for so many years. Stay strong, Silvio.

What sad news, this surely represents a very difficult and sad blow to all the family, specially Silvio 😥

Hope he remains healthy and strong 🙏🏼

Of course Madonna hated her when she was younger almost every stepson-daughter hates their stepmother-dad. I’m sure they resolved things as they grew older

I saw an interview clip with Madonna - I don't know who with, but from her look I guess it was 1995 (Something To Remember look/hair). She was very emotional when asked about her mother and there were tears when she she said that she missed her so much and yearned for a mother to be able to call when she was upset.

My take on this is, if she were even marginally close to Joan she may have also said but I can speak to my stepmother. She didn't. Suggests to me in 1995 that there was no close relationship there. Maybe just a cold acceptance. It may have improved in the subsequent years.

If anyone here knows about this interview clip, please share link here. I'd love to see it again. I've never seen M that emotional before. Broke my heart.

I remember the backstage footage of Madonna interacting with Joan and her father at MDNA tour. It was very sweet.

I don't recall much about that documentary but yeah that scene always stood out to me in that seemed pretty good natured.

It's probably safe to say Madonna didn't really respect Joan much growing up but over time that relationship I'm assuming got better.

At any rate Joan seemed a good hearted person from the little I know about her.

She definitely had a positive aura in the few moments that we’ve seen of her. Supportive to Madonna and Silvio.
