I wonder if the 3 songs she knows are Vogue, Express Yourself and Rain or if her team showed the videos on mute to her when they presented the mood board for this:
:bubblebitch:

The entire video is a reference to the 100% Pure Love video by Crystal Waters ... the blue tones, the sofa, the aquarium etc. the video was directed by Marcus Nispel who directed a ton of 90's dance music videos.

But yeah, we can now say Crystal Waters was inspired by Madonna, another one to the list.

TBF Madonna was referenced a lot when the video came out (and obviously Crystal Waters)

of course, but if Azaelia's video features multiple references to one video by Crystal Waters, my conclusion is that it is based on that video, not multiple Madonna videos with a degree of similarity. We had a similar situation with Ariana's Yes, And video, entirely based on Paula Abdul's video, which was based on a clip from a Bob Fosse movie, and some fans still claimed Ariana's video was inspired by Madonna.

Things can have more than one reference though?

or.... in many cases, Madonna fans see a Madonna reference when it's not really there because Madonna is their main cultural reference point. Just recently, there was a topic about Kylie possibly sampling Madonna's laugh, when in fact the laugh was sampled from another artist, from a 1982 song.

Ok but it wasn't Madonna fans who raised Madonna as a reference for the 1991 video or indeed for that Ariana Grande, which had Madonna mentioned in countless articles. Madonna is not "my main cultural reference point" but we're on a Madonna forum, so it's not exactly shocking people talk about Madonna a lot.

actually, the song was compared to Vogue, and then the Madonna fans started finding obvious similarities in the videos. The main one was the scaffolding in the Ariana video being similar to the Blond Ambition tour set.

I don't think people on a Madonna forum suggesting a Madonna influence in video for a song clearly referencing Madonna by an artist clearly inspired by Madonna is a reach. It's something folk can just ignore if they disagree.

of course, they are free to talk about it, but if somebody's work was clearly based on another person's work down to a t, claiming to see a Madonna reference is uninformed and biased. Of course, this only works when there is a Madonna reference to be found.

But again, things can have more than one reference. I mean the guy who directed Yes, And? cites David Fincher as his biggest career inspiration. If you disagree fine but quit doing that lame "crazy Madonna fans" thing when we're all ultimately here to talk about Madonna.

David Fincher directed the Paula Abdul video that was the basis for Ariana's video. He was directing Paula's videos before he worked with Madonna. Of course, this absolutely CANNOT mean that Madonna was inspired by Paula Abdul.

There is only one reference in Ariana's video and that's Paula Abdul's video directed by David Fincher.

No-one has said a Madonna video can't have been influenced by what the director did before. You just got bizarrely upset about the fact *journalists* (not Madonna fans) mentioned Madonna a lot re: the Azaelia video and then moved onto insisting anyone claiming *any* Madonna influence in an Ariana video for a song clearly referencing Madonna must be some kind of lunatic, I'm assuming cos you love Paula Abdul. For the third time, the video can be primarily referencing a Paula Abdul video and still be influenced by Madonna. I find it so bizarre that this bothers you.

so why can't Born this Way be inspired by Whitney Houston? :eyes:

I'm not even sure what you're doing beyond trolling. Why are you in a Madonna forum complaining about people suggesting things might be influenced by Madonna? Once again, with Born This Way it wasn't "Madonna fans" who were immediately referencing Madonna, it was pretty much every single critic who wrote about it and heaps of casuals on Twitter.

well, yes, but somebody can be inspired by more than one thing, things can have more than one reference.

Yes, and literally no-one referenced Whitney for BTW until Gaga mentioned her, as opposed to literally everyone referencing Madonna for Yes And? (and yes, Paula Abdul for the video). It's really not difficult. Are you one of those "I was a Madonna fans 20 years ago' types? Your angle here is deeply weird.

The Yes, And video is literally a recreation of Paula Abdul’s Cold Hearted Snake video.  Some ballroom hand work might be a nod to Madonna’s vogue video, but I think the majority of Madonna’s inspiration is in the song, not the video.

Ok so you've literally written "the video was primarily influenced by Paula Abdul but there might be a small Madonna reference there" which is literally all that's been said? Folk seem to keep hearing "there's a Madonna reference" as "THIS IS ALL MADONNA" which is just weird.

Wonder why people always forget that the hit pop girl who was obviously the most famous pop singer till mid 80s ... adorable OLIVIA

I always felt Kylie was more Olivia Newton-John than the media and fans caught on, or wanted to admit, in "favor" of comparisons to Madonna... Another example where another woman's influence was not acknowledged enough.

Another example would be Cher’s influence on Madonna. I’ve been watching old Cher performances and there’s so many things that Cher did before Madonna or that obviously influenced Madonna.

The double standards in the fan community are astonishing.
