Madonna did it first... in Rio

Madonna made history in Rio de Janeiro in the first half of this year. The city had never received so many tourists (and money) in a month of May (autumn in Brazil). Madonna's concert in Rio de Janeiro in 2024 had an economic impact of over R$300 million on the state's economy:
The Rio de Janeiro state government announced that the financial return from the concert was higher than expected.
The municipal administration calculated that the concert injected R$293.4 million into Rio's economy, considering the public's spending on food, airfare, transportation and accommodation.
The city's hotel occupancy was almost full, with 96% of the vacancies reserved.
The concert attracted over 1.6 million spectators to Copacabana beach, around 150 thousand of them tourists.

No international artist had performed on Copacabana beach since 2006. Madonna started a new trend. The mayor now wants to bring an international star every year in May. The attraction that comes right after Madonna has already been defined. Lady Gaga will be coming in 2025. As always, Madonna did it first.

Actually, Madonna wasn't "the first" depending on what stats you're wanting to highlight here, but definitely the first stand alone woman artist!  That being said, Rod Stewart managed the largest audience at Copacabana Beach in Rio when he performed their in 1994.

All that being said, apparently Madonna's appearance did spark the idea to do this annually.   So anyone following in Madonna's footsteps should be honored.  Congrats to Gaga if she's next in line for such an event. I'm sure she will attract a huge crowd too.

Rod Stewart was a featured guest at a New Years’ Eve party that had other acts besides his performance. Madonna is the first to headline such an event as the main act and with no associated holiday party.
