Rod Stewart was a featured guest at a New Years’ Eve party that had other acts besides his performance. Madonna is the first to headline such an event as the main act and with no associated holiday party.

Again, he was the only international artist to perform that night.  He still got the largest attendance, no matter how you want to spin it.  Even still, then there is The Rolling Stones, who nearly pulled in the same amount of people in 2006 as Madonna did. Yes, Madonna was the first woman solo artist, but she wasn't the first solo international artist to pull in nearly 2 million people. Rod Stewart was at his prime in 1994 and could easily pull in nearly 2 million people even if it wasn't a New Years event.

Ya but that was the distinction they used to give Madonna the Guinness. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter to me who gets the biggest audience - records are made to be broken.

Yes, I'm all for giving people due credit, but it's weird how some have easily forgotten that the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart already pulled this off.  They are equally international artists as Madonna is.  Anyway, I'm glad Madonna is once again setting a presidence.  Who follows her?  I don't care. The fact is, they are going to certainly look for high profile international artists.  Arguing about Lady Gaga attendance or anyone else before it's even confirmed or happening, seems pretty silly.  Still, I'm sure she or a number of other high profile entertainers could easily pull in a cool million or two in the future.  I'm just happy Madonna's concert was to get the ball rolling for such an annual free concert.

Madonna's show as a standalone concert in May. The other shows by other artists were part of other festivities (even new years eve) Before that, they  never have done these events around that time of the year there for free and for one artist.  they labeled it "celebration may" since M's show and talked about it becoming an annual thing after the show's huge ratings and audience. she brought in thrice as much with a free concert than Taylor did with a series of paid shows

Yeah yeah!  I acknowledged that.  But The Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart at the time, clearly could bring in a cool couple million people and they did!  Rod Stewart's is always questioned due to the fact it was on New Years Eve, but in 1994, both Rolling Stones and Stewart could pull in such an audience even in May.  I'm sure The Rolling Stones still could  still do a one off and pull in a couple million people as well.

The copycat will never stop copying her

You do realize, Lady Gaga has only been MENTIONED.  It doesn't mean she's doing it nor she sought out to copy Madonna.  The promoters most likely would have approached her.  And I'm sorry, whoever it is would be a fool NOT to jump at a chance to pull off an event like this with could being in such a high attendance.

they're upset because the organizer's choice is Lady Gaga... the organizers always want huge numbers... and they invited someone they believe can achieve that. They put Gaga in the same category as Madonna, and the detractors can't deal with it.

Oh I know.  It's the same ol' story from the same members who go out of their way to find any way to minimize an artist they don't like here.  It's just dumb!  It accomplishes nothing, but stupid fights here.  No one beyond the fan bases even care.  It's just best not to engage yourself in defending it. It's useless because no one wins in these ridiculous arguments.

Well they’ve had the best and it was a success, they thought “who is similar that we can repeat the same success with.” The second rate Madonna sprung to mind.

Who else would they get to compete with that?  I would think the only other two female acts would be Taylor Swift or Beyonce'.   If I was an organizer or concert promoter, I'd definitely see why they chose Lady Gaga, especially knowing she has a new album coming out in February.  No matter what any of us thinks of Lady Gaga, the fact is, she will definitely draw in a huge crowd as Madonna did. Make it a "Free concert" that just guarantees a huge crowd from an international artist.  :)
