The moment for downtempo rnb has passed now sadly. That genre is in decline against after a good ten years back on the forefront. Big pop, alt pop and rock twinges are coming around again. She’d get away with dance too but an RNB vibe would make her feel a bit behind the curve. I’d have loved it though a few years back.

MDNA was really up against it really. We know it was her second divorce album and it naturally had comparisons to Like A Prayer her magnum opus and THE quintessential Madonna origin story. Everything you need to know about her genesis and MO is written in those 11 songs. Second to that MDNA brought back the collaborator that had given her the second  wind of her career and her critical and awards dahling William Orbit.
Thus it was destined to fail.
Thirdly Madonna was distracted and phoned it in.

You can’t really say anymore about it. It’s the sound of a recently divorced woman trying to fit back into the clothes she had before her kids and marriage and heading out for a night with her pre-marital friends to have a laugh. Its full of drink fuelled bravado and “yass queen you’re a boss bitch” laughs and self soothing until she’s being sick in a bathroom stall, holding her own hair up, crying into the toilet seat and saying I FUCKED UP just as much as he did.

Its a real sad record and a in truth a brilliant premise in principal but the way it was delivered felt like the transcript  of a “get back out there” Wednesday in February speed date evening “so tell me about you” in three  minutes kinda way.
When really that’s so beneath who she is. Falling Free is the voicemail she leaves Guy in the cab ride on the way home after a few large glasses of burgundy in the bar….but by the end of the cab ride, just as she finishes the message….she decides to delete it…and goes to bed alone.

Hmm I have mixed feelings. The last 15 years have undoubtedly been some of the most fascinating in Madonna’s life. Not in terms of music but in terms of what has been going on in her life. Yet I feel we’ve gotten very little in terms of how or who she is. A couple of songs on MDNA and endless lol pop moments of “remember I’m the fucking queen ok”
I find her post 2005 material quite a bit more difficult to connect to that all the stuff that came before.

A couple of moments of vulnerability.
“Im a stranger in a strange land “
    “Forgave myself for being me”
but even those two lines are wrapped in lots of superfluous imagery that is wholly unrelated.

I always noted the ice cold emotionless matter of fact delivery of Miles Aways lyrics marked a shift in her. She’d have sung the shit out of that song a few years before. I dunno maybe it was intentional.

Despite its failures there were a couple of moments on MDNA that invited us in but they were largely tucked away on the bonus CD. Even her dig at Gaga and her Busy Mom anthem IDGAF really only show us she’s in fight mode but wants us to believe she doesn’t care” . For me the lady doth protest too much. Question: Who even is she presenting to us musically anymore?

well she answered us and said “Bitch I’m Madonna” Ironic since all she revealed was that she drinks beer out of a shoe and gets her freak on. I’ve found the decade + long call backs to former selves and former glories a major distraction technique. She’s hiding.
Even the roll call of dead contemporaries on a song like Funana should feel sincere and emotional yet feels a bit “weren’t these people great? Did you know they’re dead and I’m still alive?”
Even the seemingly open moment of Joan Of Arc was essentially “can you be nice to me please I’m a legend”. Her defences have been up for years and years now.
I’m kinda sad that the music does not show us who she is or what she’s thinking anymore. Like she decided to shut that window on us and I miss that. She’s hiding in plain sight and I don’t think we’ll get anything truly great from her till she decides to reflect and open up to us again and I really, really hope she does because at this time of her life the fruit should be so ripe. It’s the most interesting period.

All any fan wants from their fave artist is for us to let them in. I think this is largely the biggest issue with the disconnect from some of her long time fans and the GP.
So yes,  of course she gave us so much in the spring and summer of her career but Autumn has seen her retreat to the potting shed and shut the door. I can only hope she’s been busy making emotional jams and pickled hearts so her winter store can keep us well fed.

If MDNA's lead single had been Love Spent things would have felt so much different.
Listening to the demos its such a mix of Britney and Rihanna.
    I actually love Some Girls.
Love Spent, I'm A Sinner, Some Girls,  would have been a good singles run (possibly Falling Free / Gang Bang double A as a fourth)
With GMALY a Super Bowl exclusive. Masterpiece a standalone single for the film and those two songs included on the deluxe as a bonus. It still wouldn't make the album any better as a whole but at least the best work would have been showcased.

That's automatic on Spotify's part too, you can't choose which version is highlighted on the Top 10. Usually the version highlighted is the one on the oldest album release (not single) where is included. Since now "LAP" Album Version and "LAP" on "Celebration" are merged, the system picks the Album Version cause is the oldest and it considered it was the first one released.
Another example: "Vogue". "Immaculate" and "Celebration" versions are merged, but the system sees "Immaculate" was the first one released, so it shows that one.
"Material Girl" is weird. The 2024 single is merged with the "Celebration" version and usually Spotify highlights albums, not singles, don't know what's about that one. Guess if someday they're both merged with the "Like A Virgin" album version, as they should, the album version will take place.
So much useless information in my head!

All the average videos we got from her in the 80's with random clips from the films would have sufficed. I'm shocked one of you lot hast sorted that yet.
