The hate for the album was already there when the lead single leaked months ahead to negative reception and they still went with it as the lead.
The song was so bad, that Madonna even lost the radio support she had in Europe and that paired with her slightly arrogant "reductive" interview made her look washed up in the eyes of the public. Her image still hasn’t recovered from it. To say she didn’t care is also not true. She definitely did, she recorded another diss track for Rebel Heart which she thankfully never released.
That wasn’t the main issue with the album. The problem was the very apparent lack of cohesion between the songs. Her previous albums all sounded like one body of work that was conceived as a whole. For MDNA you could tell that the Solveig tracks were the core album that she actually worked on with the producer, maybe Best Friend and I'm Addicted as well. The rest were just stuff taken from the trash can of other artists. The Solveig tracks are some of the worst crap she has ever recorded. It’s infantile, sonically abhorrent and has aged even worse.
I agree that the album wasn’t as negatively received by fans as it is now but that’s usually how it is. Fans need some time to digest an album usually before forming a final opinion. Compared to Rebel Heart and Hard Candy, MDNA lacks proper direction and stronger material. The only that is ironically worse is Madame X, which is pretty much 100% Madonna.

I like the Portugese tracks the most but the issue with MX is the lack of good melodies, the terrible vocal production and in some cases, the writing. It’s also a bit inconsistent in terms of styles.
You’re reading too much into it. Hard Candy was the divorce album. She was going through a breakup at that time. It’s apparent on Incredible, Miles Away and She's Not Me. That was the "escapist" album.
For MDNA she just didn’t have the time to actually write and produce a full album's worth of songs. She was focusing on directing her movie and raising 4 children on her own. I don’t blame her for that but maybe it would have been better to just go on tour with a GH Tour that year following the Superbowl HTS instead of forcing herself to create a mixtape of songs with 50% not written or produced by her.
There are some personal and introspective moments on the album, yes. But they get lost in the bunch of hand-me-down tracks not actually written or produced by her. That, paired with the lack of quality in almost every aspect of this album makes it her second worst in my opinion and that of many fans.
The opposite was the case for me. I liked MDNA at first but my god…it has aged like milk that was already partially spoiled.
Hard Candy still sounds fresh and that Timbaland/Neptunes sounds is making a comeback.
    YES! 🙌🏼

I'm sorry but Superstar is indefensible. There is not a single aspect about this song that isn’t cringeworthy.

I completely agree with what you've written. Madonna has given me 40 years of enjoyment, and I still love what she's released—I don't need anything more (though if there is more, all the better). As a collector of remixes and edits, there's only one thing I would ask from Madonna to make my collection feel complete: Open Your Heart (Remix Edit). It was the single released in Europe and the version I enjoyed far more than the album version when I was young.

I generally agree with you on everything, but comparing Superstar with Cherish, in my opinion, is like comparing Express Yourself with Jimmy, Jimmy.
One thing is certain in this universe: there are no two Madonna fans with exactly the same tastes (but I like Shoo-bee-doo very much).

@missberic do you do despise Beautiful Killer...? Oh cher, you'll never be Alain Delon... (Btw I L-U-V TUTR, shame it wasn't performed at encore of MDNAT in between LAP and Celebration when Get Together would be awesome to fit where it was actual TUTR's place in tour...)

Well, we're Madonna fans—probably the fanbase with the most diverse tastes. I've met people who love Like a Virgin but hate Erotica, or others who adore American Life but aren't fond of Like a Prayer. We're not discussing personal preferences here, we're discussing why an album might be criticized for its production style when earlier albums made in the same way were not criticized and were highly acclaimed.

When did this turn into an MDNA thread. Didn't we all suffer enough the first time around... The Cherish 7" is great, I really love it.

MDNA is a bunch of rejects from other artists and you can really tell it is if you compare it to Rebel Heart, Hard Candy and Madame X. Most of the songs on that album haven’t been written by Madonna despite writing credits saying otherwise. She added a few words and has gotten credit. SHAMEFUL!
It's also embarrassing that she has gotten more or less bad tracks from the producers. The "good" songs are only good by comparison and not because they are career highlights. The bad songs are some of the worst crap she has ever released.
    Superstar, I Don't Give A, B-Day Song, I Fucked Up, GMAYL… these songs are Funana's big sisters.

She better count her fucking blessings.

Also, it's going to be Madonna's 66th birthday soon!

I personally think Beautiful Killer is over rated by the fanbase. I think it’s testament to how poor the album is in general that a mid track like Beautiful Killer gets flowers.  Zero shade to anyone who loves it, I’m all love here but I just don’t get what the song is all about. It’s superfluous to anything on that record. As is Birthday Song. What were they thinking? At least songs like Best Friend and I Fucked Up relate to the subject matter of her divorce. MDNA was such a smash and grab era.

9/11, Bush presidency, becoming more and more annoyed with your home country & menopause.
She hated Bush to a boiling passion. She likely also reflected a lot on her career and life choices after she experienced motherhood along with an actual marriage. She was living a very different life than she did before 2001.

    It’s not. 😅
The version from It's That Girl is an edit of the U.S./Extended Dance Mix. The video version is the one called "Edit", even though it’s a new remix and not just an edit of the LP version (as you pointed out correctly). The latter has appeared on the majority of the 7" singles and is indeed the version used in the video. 🫶🏻
It was supposed to appear on the digital single release but some intern messed up and added the Celebration version instead of the 7" version. They noticed the mistake and removed all the remix labels, but still haven’t figured out a way to fix it unfortunately.
