I disagree. Madonna never did an album like HC and it was a breath of fresh air after the COADF album, in which she came back to her disco roots. HC is innovative and experimental and proves Madonna ability to choose current producers at the top of their game and and still be able to push them further to achieve something totally unique and pioneering like the HC album.
Let's face it: the only real skip on HC is the Incredible song. Seriously, even Spanish Lesson is lowkey a bop and a great way to learn some Spanish. There is plenty of substance on the rest of the album: 4 minutes still got a great message to save the world and Miles Away's lyrics are extremely mature and it kinda forecast the imminent divorce with Guy Ritchie. It may not be a subject as deep as the lost of her mother, but it still deal with very important and personal stuff. Not to mention that HC songs are joyful and make you dance! Even the ballads got awesome bridges and melodies.
The hard true is that Like a Prayer tries to be joyful but it miserably fail: Cherish, Dear Jessie and Keep It Together are meant to be happy cheerful songs but they are just plenty boring and got pathetic lyrics. Those songs aged quite bad and are definitely a skip in the album. Love Song is bland and disappointing cuz Madonna and Prince did not put enough effort on it; and, finally Act of Contrition tastes like the title track leftover. This means that half of Like a Prayer album is not that great at all.

The left seem to be the racists that want to censor freedom of speech and are unable to think artistically or intellectually. It’s sad, but Madonna will be back turning both sides upside down. Word by word. Fans usually claim that she got the backlash from the radio and the American public because the album was very political and critical, putting her on a pedestal for her “courage” and showing her like a hero or something whereas in reality it really wasn’t. Instead it was apolitical and highly ego-central. It was not successful because the album was subpar, and its sound was far from what the American audience in general liked back then, that is R&B/hiphop. Personally I like this album, but generally speaking it was not meant to be popular. When Madonna made good music (‘Hung Up’) or the sound that would appeal to her citizens (‘4 Minutes’), she saw success in the US again. Besides, her 2004 tour in the US was extensive and played sold-out. On the other hand, “American Life” wasn’t unsuccessful only in the US. International sales of the album was slow and low, too.
In short, the “American Life” era seems full of myths among the fans. In reality it was a mediocre era.

I'd pick MDNA. The praise that gets heaped on Love Spent and Mastershit is beyond me, both tracks seem to suffer from poor production. I think the only thing I liked from the whole era in its original form is I Fucked Up, the rest is disposable. In my opinion, the poorest output in her musical career, and that's counting the Otto von Werner period :p

I don't think that any era got an exaggerated love/attention from the fans or the public itself. In the rearview mirror, them all are cases of easy-to-understand action/reaction situations. But... in my opinion, Madonna kinda overrate the Hard Candy era. She seems to have a distorted vision of how sucessfull it was not. To keep performing album tracks from it in the next tours while ignoring hits singles from her hey days, is just overratedly strange. She can't be that attached to such songs. The only explanation is that Oseary must have told her a lie about its sales. And a very good one lol.
