DROWNEDMADONNA ARTICLE — Madonna’s Celebration Tour Takes Rio by Storm: Behind the Scenes of a Monumental Show
In a dazzling display of music and spectacle, Madonna’s Celebration Tour descends upon Rio de Janeiro, promising an unforgettable experience for 1.5 million eager fans. But what goes into creating such a monumental event? According to sources interviewed by O GLOBO, the entire production of the show is estimated to have cost around R$ 60 million.
    BUILDING THE FOUNDATION
Bringing the Celebration Tour to the sands of Rio requires more than just star power; it takes meticulous planning and execution. Leo Gontijo, the setup coordinator for the Rio show, explains the main challenge: preventing sinking into the sand. To overcome this, a sturdy flooring capable of bearing the weight of a building is utilized. With a team of 200 people and 90 containers serving various functions, the groundwork is laid for a seamless operation.
    SOUND EXCELLENCE & CHALLENGES
Another critical element for Madonna’s two-hour show is the sound system. 16 towers equipped with speakers and 15 LED screens, along with 2 contributing to the scenery, are currently being installed. To ensure seamless audio and visual transmission throughout the entire venue, fiber optic cables will connect the stage to the towers, all powered by 38 generators.
Moreover, Madonna’s team faces the task of recalibrating the sound system, given her previous performances in stadiums and arenas. Sound engineer Matheus Braz elucidates that while enclosed environments facilitate sound wave reflection, the open expanse of the beach allows waves to propagate and dissipate freely.
“There’s a significant amount of calculation involved in setting up a system like this. Yet, inevitably, some variables elude precise calculation,” explains Matheus. “During my time on the tour in London, I witnessed firsthand how factors like fan positioning and temperature fluctuations constantly influence the sound dynamics. It’s a fascinating aspect of the process.”
    PERFECTING THE VOCALS
Madonna is one of the first in the industry to have a professional dedicated exclusively to vocal effects during her shows. On this tour, the goal is to make the singer's voice and pre-recorded melodies as similar as possible to the original recordings; a way to take the audience on a journey through four decades of her career.
One way to ensure everything is under control is to bring the sound mixing consoles, as well as the stage set and costumes, to Brazil — all stored in 45 crates. This required three airplanes. Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to rent local equipment? According to sources connected to the Celebration Tour, this decision stems from the understanding that a show operates like an ecosystem: if even the smallest element is missing, it may not work. There's no room to take that risk.
    WEATHERING THE ELEMENTS
With an outdoor venue comes the unpredictability of weather. Production takes a proactive approach, securing a consulting contract with Climatempo to monitor weather conditions and tidal variations. This allows for necessary adjustments to be made well in advance, ensuring the show goes on rain or shine.
    LIVE BROADCAST EXTRAVAGANZA
Prepare to be dazzled as Madonna’s monumental performance takes center stage in Copacabana, broadcasting live for fans worldwide. Hosted by Kenya Sade and Marcos Mion, this larger-than-life show will be airing on TV Globo, streaming via GloboPlay — offering free access for logged-in non-subscribers — and on Multishow.
Genre director Raoni Carneiro unveils the behind-the-scenes mastery, with an impressive fleet of at least 30 cameras poised to capture every captivating moment. “With a production of this magnitude, incorporating camera angles already perfected by Madonna for screens is a natural fit,” Carneiro explains. “Our team’s precision ensures we capture every beat flawlessly, delivering an immersive experience for viewers.”
As the Queen of Pop takes the stage in Rio, she continues to push the boundaries of live entertainment, leaving an indelible mark on music history.

    What. A. Night!!!
First off, the show is visually stunning. You really have to see it in person with your own eyes as videos don’t capture the screens, backdrops, dancers and lights all working together. The sound was amazing - synths and basses were booming making it extra special to hear the original arrangements.
M started strong vocally but struggled with Mother and Father and Crazy For You (which is always crazy to me since the high notes in Crazy For You are the same as that of DCFMA and she nails the latter every night). She laughed it off each time and the audience didn’t care either. Her vocals blend really well with the backing track and that’s all that matters to me. Take A Bow sounded pleasant as well though I am bummed that I most likely won’t be able to experience her live performance of Rain. She had an extra pep to her step all night and was full of energy. She was in a great mood too - I’ve never seen her smile this much during a show. The LA crowd really loved her and Bob.
In terms of the actual performances: the opening is so simple but so iconic at the same time - I think it wouldn’t have the same effect if it wasn’t for Bob’s intro. NY act was fantastic. Transition to LAP is too long. Sex era act also drags a little (Erotica was amazing but JML slowed the show down a bit too much). Hung Up On Tokisha / Hung Up was amazing - everybody was singing along. 2000s act was great as well. I have never been the biggest fan of Ray of Light (sorry) but seeing it live is a transformative experience. Audience reacted the loudest to Live To Tell, Like A Prayer, Don’t Tell Me, La Isla Bonita, Billie Jean/Like A Virgin and of course when M brought out Kylie. You could tell it was a sweet, genuine, special moment for them both.
This is my 4th time seeing M (S&S part 2,  MDNA, RH) and honestly this might be my favorite tour. I do agree that it’s a little thin on “hits” but as a die hard it’s a treat seeing Open Your Heart in its mostly original glory, Erotica/You Thrill Me, Bad Girl, and Take A Bow. I went with a casual and she was really impressed by the production and M’s sassy personality!
