American Life: the most underrated album ever

An album like AMERICAN LIFE will never get the appreciation it deserves from an artist like Madonna.  Most people see her as a song and dance girl that doesn't really offer that much substance.  Of course, we die hard fans know better.  I don't mind the "Holiday", "Into The Groove" and "Get Together" songs.  They are all fun.  We need songs like that, but I love how Madonna continues to show versatility in her work.  With each new album, she still attracts new fans. This is why she's still doing quite well for her self even 35 years in.

AL had some really great songs (Easy Ride, Hollywood, Love Profusion, X-static Process, Intervention), but a lot of awful ones too. The whole concept was rather patchy and flawed which is probably what contributed to it's commercial failure. The title track in particular is a horrible horrible song, and was a poor choice as lead-off single. Also, the pseudo-political undertone, which only featured on the cover and the AL video, was rather hollow and contrived, and fell completely flat, doing a lot more harm than good.

Its not a bad album... nowhere near, but had it been handled and produced a lot better, it could have been ranked as one of her best.
