Their careers belong to different eras. Madonna's imperial years were when the physical format, real promo, radio support and international visibility were needed. Taylor is from the streaming, social media, multiple album editions , bulk buying and payola years. Even the "record" sales thing is rigged counting single and streaming data instead of REAL album sales. We cannot compare them because they belong to complete music industry eras.
Madonna's impact in every music related aspect, record sales and charts around the globe and legacy are something Taylor will never get as she's doing incredibly well but she's the most basic, scripted and most chart obsessed artist in the industry. And we better not talk about that mentally 7 year old fanbase.
Imagine Madonna's career if the internet and social media had been like today during her first 2 decades in the industry.

I actually think her "prettiness" is fairly overrated. She looks constipated all the time.

Outside the UK she has abotu 1-2 hit singles in Germany and France and that's about it, is the person who were comparing to Madonna dominated throughout Europe?
This is just some of Madonna success in Europe:

I think it's comical how you're using the "in the last century" excuse for Madge as if that doesn't dismiss the first 20 years of her career  Regardless, she was the #1 female in the 20th century and is #3 in 21 century (2000-2022) in the UK. Who else did it like her from her generation?

    - She is both the most successful female artist in the RPM charts and in the Music & Media charts of continental Europe of all time.
    - She has the longest-charting #1 album of all time in Europe (34 weeks).
    - Has the most #1's out of any artist in history in Europe.
    - More chart entries in Europe than any other artist in history.
    - Highest-grossing female tour in Europe (for 17 years and counting now).
    - Best-selling non-Francophone international female artist.
    - Highest attended show ever in France.
    - Best-selling international female artist in Germany.
    - More #1 albums in Germany than any other artists.
    - Most successful singles artist in German history.
    - Best-selling album by a foreign artist in Italy.
    - More #1's in Italy than any other artist.
    - Highest attended show ever in Italy.
    - Most #1's in the Netherlands by any artist in history.
    - Best-selling compilation album (solo and female artist) in the UK.
    - #1 female of all time in the UK (last update January 2023)
    - Highest-grossing solo show in Wembley stadium.
    - More #1 albums in the UK than any other female artist.
    - Most times for a female artist to simultaneously top the UK singles and albums charts in the UK.
    - First female artist to dominate year-end singles and albums charts in the UK.
    - Most #1's in Spain out of any artist in history.
    - Most #1's in Ireland out any artist in history.
    - fastest-selling show of all time in Estonia.
    - fastest-selling show of all time in Romania.
    - fastest selling show of all time in Portugal.
    - biggest show of all time in Switzerland.
    - biggest show ever in Czech Republic.
    - largest audience ever for a Nordic country.
    - largest music concert in the history of Iberian Peninsula.

No she hasn't, Madonna has the most number 1 singles and top 10 globally for any artist and still has the most number 1 albums for any female artist globally. In Japan alone she has 25 number 1 singles  which is more than any artist on there billboard chart. True Blue is also the best selling album in Brazil, and she's also sold more albums there for any international act, she also still holds the record for attendance with 120,000, in fact Madonna overall attendance is 131, 000 in France and Taylor is 96,000 in Australia. My point is Madonna is globally more successful than her, Taylor wouldn't even be in the top 50  most succesful act in most of these countries including sales. I also believe on the US billboard despite all of Taylor tricks which I think will come back and bite her Madonna is still number 1 for solo act behind the Beatles. But I do blame Madonna team for not  updating  alot of her records/sales in Guinness and they barely promote her legacy.

Is this even a real conversation. Madonna IS the Queen of Pop. It is easy for someone like Taylor Swift to stroll through the doors that Madonna, and others, opened for her. She isn't paving any new paths or breaking down any barriers, and therefore, hasn't fought for anyone's rights or speak for those who can't speak out loud. She is safe and non controversial. She seems like a nice girl, but even Taylor knows Madonna is the Queen. I don't think that Taylor Swift has made any moves that will cement her place in pop music history. Just another popular star, one of many. In my opinion...

before the huge tour, the general consensus on this very site was that she is local and touring numbers are the biggest showcase of relevancy. Now, all of a sudden, when she sold out massive stadiums worldwide - in some places more than any other international star, the argument against her is that "people don't play her songs out loud in the car"

And again: Or simply, her music outside of the USA isn’t as powerful, and you don’t hear her songs unless you have a genuine interest in her.
For example I hear Dua Lipa all time on the radio, I know her singles but they never play Taylor Swift. So, honey, I don't live under a rock.

Music is consumed differently these days, back then you had to travel around to record shops to find stuff, and playing records and cassettes repeatedly didn't add more sales. Now all Taylor Swift fans have to do is stream her rubbish repeatedly on their phones in bed and that contributes to "sales"  so of course it looks like she's more successful than she really is. She's a mediocre, forgettable nobody that silly little girls think is cool. I can't stand her. I wish people would stop going on about her, she's boring as fuck.

Exactly. When I was young, Madonna was everywhere. Her music was unavoidable, whether you liked it or not (the same was true for artists like Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, etc, etc, etc). I know who Taylor Swift is, but I only know her by name—I’m not familiar with her music or videos because they don’t interest me. So, in my view, her cultural impact is nowhere near that of Madonna

It's funny cause the press is  pumping her all over and talking about her almost everywhere, but nobody who is over 25 can name or sing any of her songs.
She may win a lot of now useless VMAS awards (is Mtv still a thing?), she may have million of streams, but she has very little impact on music and culture.
I think the thing that reminds me most of Madonna's success is all those girls trying to dress like her. I was in London in August and the trains were full of this new generation of "wannabes".  Still, dressing as Madonna was almost a rebel move, this look is just superficial, glittery and conformist.

This is how I see this:
First of all, Madonna was famous all over the world and her songs where everywhere. Here is Spain, for example,  we know who is Taylor Swift but I don't see people singing her songs, buying her albums or dressing like her. It's like if she's admired for the success she has in the USA more than for her inpact in our country. Of course she made her shows here and was like "Wow, it's incredible how much people went to her concerts". She made 2 60.000 people concerts (120.000) that is great but the same two nights ACDC made two concerts with 70.000 people each night (140.000) and the news said nothing about it. It was like "We have to talk just about her". There are other artists here that get her success or even more but you only hear about what Taylor Swift does. All her "records" and all those things but you never hear her on radio stations or in a supermarket or in a car that goes near your house listening music very loud.
When I was young Madonna (and her work) was everywhere. And I remember even my grandmother knew who was Madonna (that bad influence for our kids).
I think Taylor has a great career, but is just because she's a good influence for people and they try to sell her as much as they can. Everything is so perfect around her... It's like living in Disneyworld. I think Taylor will have a problem if someday she makes a "mistake" and does something not bad, just a little incorrect... I think people won't forgive her. Madonna, on the other side was always the bad influence. She made what she wanted to make and that was a problem for a lot of people and that's why sometimes they don't recognize her talent. But that is what make her (and her inpact in sociery) so big. Madonna is the only artist that after something like "Sex" could still be there after 30 years (look what happened with Janet and her nipple, people don't forgive the good girls).
I think it's impossible to compare them because they are from different times and music industry is very different but I have one thing clear. What makes them different is that Madonna always have had people that love her and lots of people that hated her (and they help to keep her there, like it or not). Maybe Taylor has more people that loves her now but there's a lot of people that only feels indiference for her... And love always ends but hate...

When M was Taylor’s age she was dating Rodman easily the most eccentric basketball player in the league at the time.  To the NFL her and T Kelce are a match in heaven

Don't you think it’s quite audacious to come to a Madonna forum OF ALL PLACES to ask such a dumb question along with an essay that no one has the time or the energy to read?
This is quite obviously an attempt to instigate drama and to trigger Madonna fans.
I personally am beyond sick and tired of having to hear and read about Hitlor Swift. This forum is the only place on the internet that hasn’t been entirely infested with her inorganic omnipresence. I pray to witness the day where she fades into oblivion along with her rabid army of plain Jane fans.
