I watched the MDNA Tour DVD last night for the first time in a few years. I saw the show twice (Birmingham and Edinburgh) and always remember it being one of my favourite shows, even with the mishaps during the Birmingham show and the shortened Edinburgh show. The main complaint with the DVD is the constant overlapping of footage and the too-fast edits. A lot of the footage is quite blurry also. That said, last night I realised it is one of my favourite tours and I hope she works with that director again in the future. I'm hoping the Madame X tour is something fresh as it is in theatres and not just a video screen as a backdrop.

Madonna Haters Are Desperate, Old, Tired, and Oh So Irrelevant. Can’t They Just Retire Already?
David Toussaint May 7   https://medium.com/@davidtoussaint_49945/madonna-haters-are-desperate-old-tired-and-oh-so-irrelevant-cant-they-just-retire-already-befb1d32ec05?fbclid=IwAR3KpSMWB-sj3g4hSl1MsMMDUNK9lRMe9nRTQajS5LtayEFEGSjo4RGr6sQ As a diehard Madonna fan since she caked-jumped in her skivvies on the 1984 MTV awards, I’ve known for quite some time that I’m supposed to — expected to — denounce the woman. From the Far Right and their protests in the 80’s and the “musical purist” queers who damned me to hell for loving a non-tragic, puff-piped vocalist, to the general 90’s population who waged jihad on her and anyone who still paid attention to her “Sex” book and “Erotica” sins, and the relentless articles sent to me like Bible versus every time she got bad press (I got a lot of “Old Testament” articles), to the new millennium age of responding to my adoration with tweets and posts so vile it reminded me of the fire and brimstone lectures Grandma used to give me for skipping out on Church.
To all of that and more, more, more, there’s a religious fervor among those who are always mad about Madonna, and their refusal to give up is like a snore. It isn’t enough that they try to nail her to her own proverbial cross; they’re determined to convert us believers to their non-Madonna way of life.
It’s ironic, more than anything, because, with all their dissecting, analyzing, and endless articles and rants and comments on her irrelevancy — the most surefire way to make an artist stay relevant — they’re clueless about what Madonna fans truly care about; her music. While they’re spending all their energy and words trying to justify their logic, the faithful among us are just having 1, 2, cha cha fun.
If Madonna’s albums don’t sell like they used to or her songs don’t get played on the radio or she hasn’t turned a Pepsi ban into a professional victory, her detractors seem to think that will make us loathe her. Yeah, right, we’ll burn her old patchouli-scented CDs because she’s not as Grande as Arianna. If one photo shoot or video or song resembles a previous one, they’ll tell us she’s desperate and think we’ll follow their lead, because, apparently, always evolving Taylor Swift and Beyonce have never looked or sounded even remotely similar twice. What, Madonna’s posing in the same position as she did for the “Confessions” cover? At least Cher got smart and did something new…cover Abba!
Yes, Mad-haters, we know much of Madonna’s success has been built around re-invention (a strategy that pretty much every gal who’s proceeded her has followed), and that, after a gazillion albums and videos and photos she sometimes evokes her prior incarnations. We also know that if reinvention were the only key to success, everyone who’s ever switched hair colors would have more top ten hits than Elvis.
They’ll vilify Madonna for working with hot, young musicians to stay noticed — because God forbid the biggest selling female singer of all time use her clout to work with the best in the business; she should stick to subway performers or Jermaine Jackson — then remind us she’s calculating. Because I’m fairly certain all those other artists just work their albums and videos and concert tours off the seat of their pants.
Finally, they’ll tell us the kicker: Madonna’s old. Why didn’t she just roll over and die like every other respectable artist from the 80's? The nerve! Women say this more often than men, which speaks volumes about the collective consciousness of the “woke” millennial, #metoo-inspired feminist who believes women should have the same rights as men unless they’re pop stars. When cornered, they’ll say it’s not her really age, it’s that she doesn’t act her age. Apparently, Madge forgot to read the handbook. If you’re reading, M., know you’re in good company. Most happy, intelligent, creative types I know also forgot to read their “How to grow old, sad, fat, and de-sexed” guidebooks too. Ah, the good old 1950’s mentality! Let’s bring it back, put women in the kitchen, and Make America Madonna-Free Again (MAMA)!
Thing is, we’ve heard it all before and we’re bored…with you. We respect those who don’t care for Madonna’s music or looks or politics or country of residence or current eye patch phase, but who also know how to state their position and move on. You know, like with their lives. I have friends who fit this bill and we actually get along with our differing opinions and have not gone to war. Madonna’s true haters want “GoT”-worthy battle and post just as many updates. They also won’t be happy until they spoil it for the rest of us. They’re the Mormons who invade our homes and don’t give up preaching the true faith until we slam the door shut. And then come back as soon as the devil has once again reared its musical head.
Every time I write so much as a nice tweet about Madonna a Lady Gaga fan threatens me, sometimes with death — any huge Madonna follower knows I’m not kidding about this. This is crazy for a couple of reasons, the most obvious being that it’s bat-s*** crazy. Putting that aside, there’s no reason two superstars can’t exist on the same planet at the same time, and there’s no real reason to compare Madge and Gaga except when, because of sound or vision similarities, the latter has encouraged us to. “Reductive” didn’t hit viral mode until a year after every reporter, fan of both stars, and mashup begged for a comment.
Thing is, they’ve both moved on. You can too. There’s an entire planet in trouble with your name on it!
Of course, no article about Madonna haters would be complete without mentioning the self-described “fans” who berate her on a daily basis then profess she’ll always be their queen. (In regards to Madonna, “but I love her to death” is the new “bless her heart.”) They never like anything she does, even if it’s the lighting in the far right corner of the sixth frame of her new video, and they’ll wax sentimental over her “Ray of Light Days.” When “RoL” came out, they were waxing sentimental over her “fun, 80’s, dance days.” Ask 1,000 of these fans what they’d like her to do and you’ll get 1,000 different answers. Yesterday, they wanted smaller venues; today they’re mad that smaller venues mean harder-to-get tickets. Can’t she do anything right…for me?
The kicker is that a good 90 percent of these people will tell you they’re “music industry insiders” and have secret information on the behind-the-scenes plagued-music-wars Madonna’s fighting on a daily basis and how it can be fixed. Apparently, however, they’re not quite “inside” enough to guide Madonna themselves. How is it that, with all their clout, she doesn’t converse with them on Snapchat? Call this group whatever you wish but I simply go with “irritating AF.”
As Madonna gets set to release “Madame X” on June 14, there’s something everyone who’s already plotting the criticisms and hit pieces and general steam-spewing-out-their-ears tweet storms needs to know: Like the Queen herself, we’re not going anywhere. Her music makes us laugh and cry and dance and sing get up and do our thing. If that sounded a little clichéd, it’s because it’s still a little true. Yes, we criticize, we compare and contrast, we’re still baffled over the “Hard Candy” cover art. But we do it with lovable glee. Because we’re invested in this miraculous, three-decade pop star who, more than anything, hooks like a glove.
The other day, after getting up and walking my newly-blind dog, then sitting in a dentist chair for six hours because, after four months, they still can’t get my teeth fixed correctly, talking to my mother with dementia, talking to my friend with cancer, walking four miles on three hours sleep to get rid of this brand-new stomach bulge, putting ice on my thrown-out back, then getting an email that said a job I desperately needed had been postponed, I tuned out everything else and blared Madonna’s new single on the headphones. In fewer than four minutes time I’d lost myself in a wonderful world of music that sounded like multi-colored tulips in a garden of Willy Wonka pure-imagination pop.
To put it simply, I rose.

Honestly I think the film is pretty poor. Even if they had different stuff they had to blend together if these reasons are true, It's not just that they used footage from different shows but that a big deal of the footage is poor, even the Olympia footage was poorly shot.

Ideally I would've liked the show to be filmed on a stadium show possibly in Brazil. Maybe one day the full Stade de France will leak.

Roy reacted to Future Lover in The Long, Troubled History of The MDNA Tour DVD
It is now a wide shared opinion that the official MDNA Tour film is nothing more than wasted potential. Horribly edited, color saturation turned up the max, over edited vocals, added crowd reactions taking away from the performance. All things that are accurate. However, many fans only complain about the shortcomings of the film. In reality, we should feel lucky it turned out the way that it did. Join me on the long journey it took to get the MDNA Tour on film.

    Background
The MDNA Tour was the ninth concert tour undertaken by Madonna in support of her twelfth studio album, MDNA. The tour was one of Madonna's largest and most intricate performances to date. Played in predominately stadiums in Europe and South America, and mostly in arenas in North America, the tour was a critical and commercial success. The show did find some controversy for the usage of firearms in the performance, Madonna flashing her breasts, and accusations of lip syncing. Madonna did not let this deter her and she gave 110% each and every night.

    The Initial Film Plan
It was decided early on that the team wanted to film at least part of the show during the July 14 stop of the tour in Paris at the Stade de France. Indeed, crane cameras and hand held cameras found their way inside the stadium. However, deciding to film the show here created a scenario rarely used in modern concert film production; it was one night only show. Usually, the selection of the venue to film a concert goes to venues that will be getting the show for multiple nights in order to make sure the show is completely captured and there is footage to fall back on should something in one show go wrong. So the filming here as you can see was strange. The show in Paris went off mostly without hitch (and even included the nipple flash from M) and the crowd was mostly into it. However, the footage that was captured didn't suit Madonna completely. Some rumors say that she felt the footage was shot from too far away and that not enough of the performance and energy on stage was captured in the footage. So, the choice was made to cut this footage and start from scratch.

    South America? Yes! No!
Madonna found incredible success with the filming of her Sticky & Sweet Tour in Argentina. It is a very well known fact that crowds in South America are some of the most energetic in the world. Madonna planned to film the first two shows of the South American leg and her first ever shows in Columbia. It was all perfect. Amazing crowd. Beautiful stadium. Incredible show. Except...the director that M so desperately wanted to film the show was unavailable to shoot in Columbia. So, instead of not using the team she wanted, she decided to axe the filming in Columbia and looked for another place to film. However, cranes were placed in the stadium in Buenos Aires for extra crowd shots.

    Miami Life Saver
Madonna decided to film the last two shows in the US at the American Airlines Arena in Miami on November 19th and 20th. The venue is a mid-size arena (not a small arena, but far the biggest arena she brought the show to) and the arena always looks great on film. So, all the equipment was loaded in. The shows were sold out and the crowds in Miami usually promised to be energetic. However, on the 19th, Madonna was much later arriving on stage than usual and by the time the show began, there were very noticeable empty patches in the venue. The same happened the following night. While the show footage that was captured was exactly what M wanted, the empty spaces and lack of energy by the third act of the show rendered much of the Miami footage unusable.

    A Brilliant Solution
Faced with the issue of having two less than satisfactory shoots, less than a month left in the tour and no time to organize another shoot. It was time for M and her team to make a choice. Which footage was going to be used in the final film? After some deliberation...obviously it was decided that they would blend the footage of the two shoots and throw in some of the club show for good measure. That is what we ended up with.

So, my point? Maybe we should all spend less time picking out the faults of the DVD and just be grateful that we even got one.

I always loved this track. Like A Prayer was always a lost cause to me in content. It's singles (exclude Dear Jessie please) were solid and I felt like more could have been done. Analyzing religion and more angrier songs based upon her divorce should have been present. Aside from that little tangent, Act of Contrition left me stupid afterwards. It made no sense and sounded more like a feverish jumble of prayer and guilt. The ending is what gives it the character it has. What reservation was she yelling about and where was she? I love your dissection! I had thought of the restaurant before. I'd even gone as far to assume maybe that she was singing and someone in the background said some about a song missing in the computer and she abruptly freak if out, lol.

That's is such a brilliant and most humorous part of this song.

Act Of Contrition is the eleventh and final song from Madonna's third studio album "Like A Prayer" released in March 21, 1989. Little has been known about the track. Most of the people who listened to this track in the album considered this song as "mysterious, confusing and haunting."

I am one of the people who considers this track as weird and mysterious at the same time. I was so confused when I listened to it. However, after many repetitions of listening to this song, I did my best to analyze what this track meant.

So here are my personal analysis. You may agree to it or you may state your own analysis.

Here is the link to the song:

The track has two sides of the story: one is the ability of a person to sin or commit mistakes again and one is showing how everything happened that led to that moment.

The first part of the song is Madonna whispering the final part of the prayer. For those who don't know, the Act Of Contrition is a prayer recited more often during confessions when you ask forgiveness from God and promise to not commit the same mistake again. The prayer is said after telling the priest your sins and hearing his advise. This part of the song is the start of two possible stories.

STORY ONE: A person sins again.

After hearing her whispering the "Hail Mary" prayer that comes after the Act Of Contrition, a reversed distorted guitar (played by the late Prince) could be heard. Few seconds later, a reversed singing and clapping of a choir could be heard, overlapping the guitars. The guitars could be some sort of strong temptation or urge while the choir could be angels, reminding her that she has to fight the urge to sin again having recited the prayer in the first place. As the song continues, the guitars and choir voices are trying to overlap against each other, creating a wild conflict in the story as Madonna tries to concentrate on reciting the prayer.

The kick drums come in as the conflict seems to intensify even more along the way. However, as Madonna recites the prayer again, you will clearly hear the distorted guitars fading out, giving way for the choirs to have their part. This means that she is truly reciting it with full concentration and she is clearing out any urges, temptations or thoughts that could lead to her sinning again later. As she finishes the first part of the prayer, the distorted guitars come in again for a brief moment. This could mean that Madonna might have thought of something that could disturb her in her moment of reflection but she comes back to concentrate more in her thoughts.

After reciting the first part of the prayer, she recites the first part again but through singing it. However, the guitars are back again, trying to overlap the choirs. Madonna tries to concentrate on her prayer so perhaps singing it could work but it did not work as the guitars intensifies, disturbing her. As she sings the prayer, she slips out saying: "...like I knew you would." This means that she is starting to surrender to her disturbing thoughts.

She starts to repeat the phrase: "I reserve" which means that she is trying the best she can to fight the temptations to commit a big mistake again. As she repeats it, her voice goes deep from her singing voice, being immersed in the prayer. The guitars suddenly cuts out, meaning that she has felt her thoughts in prayer and concentration. Suddenly, she says: "I resolve." She has a decision but what is it?

She decides to reflect and think if she can go to heaven. Thus she says this line "I have a reservation." This means that since she said the prayer, her sins are forgiven and she can go in. However, her voice agitates a little bit as she repeats the line again, trying to let St. Peter know that she is pure again like she was before (referring to her first three eras in her solo music career). After that, the guitars come in briefly. Yes, she is finally angry. The guitars come in and overlaps the choir, intensifying itself. Finally, she snaps and shouted the line that scared the living daylights out of us: "WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT ON THE COMPUTER?!"

So what does this mean? Well, it might be that she needs to do more work in Earth for her to go to heaven or she has given up being good, having surrendered herself to her darkest thoughts in the middle of praying. Personally, the latter meaning fits more, since this song oddly enough follows to her single "Justify My Love" wherein she finally embraces her sexual thoughts and finally starts her Erotica Era, which remains to be the most controversial era in her career.

This story tells us that we sin again even after a confession but hey, we are humans who are perfectly imperfect.

    Now to the other side:

STORY TWO: A person recalls having sinned.

This side of the story is actually what I imagined when I heard the ending part of the song. Unlike the first story, this story is way shorter.

Both the guitars and the choirs come in like a flashback kind of a effect. Madonna starts to recite the prayer again and again. As she says the line "...like I knew you would," in the singing part, she recognizes God to be forgiving and caring.

She repeats the line: "I reserve" which means that she won't do it again following to her line: "I resolve." She locks in her decision to never sin again.

In the last part of the song, we can imagine what she did that made her sin. In the last part, Madonna is in the restaurant saying that she has a reservation. However, she want to clarify that she made a reservation days ago. As the person in charge checks her name, it is no where to be found, leading to Madonna yelling the line: "WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT ON THE COMPUTER?!"
If you would reverse this track, then this story would be clear but do not mind her vocals reversed. Have the thought that she sinned and she goes to church for a confession which means that the last part of the track of you were to reverse it is her reciting the Act Of Contrition.   So that is all. I know that the second story is odd but that's what I imagined when I heard it for the first time. I hope you like it. If you have your own analysis to the track, let us know.
