After I Found Love: #1’s Remixed, and Rebel Heart (Demo Assembly), it’s time to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Madonna’s career with a series of remastered EPs !

These EPs will be released chronologically and regularly (2 eras per week) to be enjoyed progressively. Yes, every single era got the same treatment. Let’s continue with the American Life era. You’ll find the tracklists in the second post right below.
While these remasters were initially done and compiled by myself back in late 2020 – early 2021, new mixes (such as the Finally Enough Love ones) and quality upgrades were taken into account since then and are also present here in remastered form.

well, we're not talking about this is a masterpiece or not. We're talking about which version is better.
To me, Rebel heart demo version is way better than MadameX version. Because only one good thing about this song is her sexy low voice. you know, this part.

I really love her sexy low voice at this part but of course she ruined it with auto tune at Madame X album. 
 

I have such fond mems of Beautiful Stranger. I was living in London at the time and working in Soho. One night out in Heaven nightclub I happened upon this boy dancing topless living his best life. An indie kid with a bod (think Dan Imagine Dragons).
we got talking and just connected. He was so free and so utterly beautiful. We spent the night together in the club. One of those nights where all bets are off and it was just a vibe. He talked to everyone he wanted.  No hang ups, no agenda..just living. I was kinda taken aback at how he just didn’t care. I had many Hang ups. He told me he always makes sure to talk and connect with three people a night at least. Friends I haven’t met yet. When you’re that beautiful everyone wants to be your friend but surprisingly some people were still reluctant to connect. Which taught me a lesson actually. 
 
Anyways he lived in a basement squat just off Oxford Street with two other people who were in this punk band and an installation artist. They’d been there three years rent free as the landlord had been Bumped off by gangsters who he owed money to. Mad story. Anyway we spent the night together. It was magical we fell asleep with the radio on …And in the morning when I woke up there was a new Madonna song on the radio. Beautiful Stranger. It was the first time I’d heard it. The boy was still asleep and I just lay there looking at him as the lyrics washed over me for the first time. She was there again… at a seminal moment. My very own beautiful stranger. 
The boy didn’t last but the lesson did. That boy freed me in a way I never knew before. Great times great mems. 

The damage is fixed. I have an extraordinary husband who went to buy it for me. When he left the store where there was only one picture-disc, he realized that there was a slight defect in it (print scratch) and since he did not know if he had to bring it back, he went to buy another one in another store where there was only one too

I know what you mean: after I'm Breathless and Like A Prayer it was a shock for me to hear her sing so nasally and weak. But I really loved (and still love) the musical production, which I think made up for it. But I was disappointed that no song produced by André Betts was released as a single (or ever sung live). Waiting should have been a single!

Yeah, you know, I'm sure that for different reasons everyone of us has different feelings and preferences, maybe especially about the live experiences.
For me the Girlie Show is the best because I think she was able to brilliantly combine a kind of warmth, authenticity (something I would say about WTG and maybe part of RH) to such a sophisticated project, fully inspired by theatre and circus (MX was a missed opportunity about that). I think of the intro for example or tracks like Why's it so Hard, I'm going banans/La Isla Bonita, Rain, Like a Virgin, Justify My Love. She also made very brave and effective choices (10, 11 minutes long tracks, like Holiday or Everybody, the Indian coreo and arrangement of a house song like Vogue, the Unrat waltz version of Like a Virgin or The Rain Dance are excellent examples). The sceneries and the theatrics were all essential, elegant and dark and the D&G costumes were certainly less iconic than Gaultier's, but so beautiful for me (I mean, the whole 70s patchwork wardrobe, the Victorian dresses and the maritime tshirt with the frak trousers). 
Musically she litterally reinvented the sound of the album, an amazing work (especially with Erotica, Fever, Rain and Why's it so hard), she went back to a more live, rough sound (BA was closer to the kind of sound she choose from the DWT on imo), she cited and perfectly integrated a loooot of material I love (from Marvin Gaye, to the Temptations, from Sly and the Family Stone to Marlene) and gave a lot of well deserved space to NIcky and Donna vocally. I adore BA, but I think it's colder and the incredible level of the first number, the whole second act and the finale is not always mantained during the show, (there are some weak numbers for me, like Now I'm following you, Material girl, Cherish, Causing a commotion, even Into the groove is not that much). The only track I find boring from the Girlie Show is In this life, and yet it's got a strong message. As I told in the beginning, I think it's just a matter of preferences. Said that, BA is absolutely amazing and surely her most iconic tour 

Who's that Girl Tour in Pontiac, MI (Detroit) and I was a scared little boy!  I was fifteen year old kid.  I left early, with my mom, as we did not understand encores or the fact that she had not sang Who's that Girl at the Who's that Girl Tour.  We waited for her to leave the arena and after awhile a security guard told us that we were standing at the wrong gate.  I was wearing a homemade tee-shirt, declaring my love for the Queen and I was deeply upset that we had left early.   HAHA  We moved reluctantly and waited at another gate as I did not want another disappointment .  She sang four more songs while we waited , including Can't Stop (I believe) before she emerged.  When I saw her, I charged down  an embankment and stopped 25 feet from her and remained perfectly still.   I was stunned.  She was wearing a long skirt, a ruffled top and had a wet head.  I stood, paralyzed, until she called out to me.  "  You don't think that it's me".  I approached after she signaled to me.  She said again, "You really don't think it's me"?  I replied.... "On TV, you are so big and sexy".  She said "thanks a lot" before preceding to to hug me.  Eventually, my mother and I were sitting in the backseat of a car with her for a few moments. She told me that Sean was in jail but I met a few siblings and her dad.   She then quizzed me to determine that I was a "legitimate fan" and I passed.  Toward the end, she kissed my cheek and told me  that I was a cutie.  I guess that I forgave my mom for making us leave early and changing tickets to not to sit next to two hairy men in wedding dresses.  HAHAHA      

I do have all of them bar Aerial, Director's cut and 50 words for snow (albeit as digital downloads) and to my ears they sound ok, though I admit I don't have an audiophile bone in my body. But that's why I said "at least some steps" in my original post. While I do agree that the 2018 Kate Bush remasters leave a lot to be desired (especially in the visual department), at least her whole catalogue has been remastered and reissued at this point. All we have from Madonna in that respect are three remastered editions released over 20 years ago that appended the original track list with two remixes each and called it a day. I can't help but find it very sad.

The level of unprofessionalism is unmatched here. One year after such a huge announcement and nothing happened (if you want to count FEL maybe...) and even worse, not even an acknowledgement of such an important milestone, 40 years of career... Maybe it's not as important as the 40th anniversary of the first ALBUM, but it's still extremely disappointing and sad not to even acknowledge it and pretend nothing happened. Terrible, unprofessional and lazily put together. Well done Warner, well done Madonna.
