Madonna and Emmy - "They don't worship Madonna" article

I just read this article from 2001 about Madonna's beginnings:

Some people recall her as being wild and scary, which I can imagine...

 

What I never heard of before was the last statement:

I never heard that she was unsuccessful when she first tried to sing...

Actually her voice has never been perfect, so it could also contain some truth. But in general people always say she had this "star quality" already.

Does someone know anything about it?
