There's three big issues when it comes to people claiming that X copied Y:
1- The theme: A disco theme, a Che Guevara inspired pic, a Monroe/50's glam photoshoot or equestrian clothes are none of the pop girls invention, they're only using the same asthetic (one could argue who used first but what's the point?).
2- The source: Madonna usually incorporates things from movies, photoshoots, paitings and create something using herself as the starting point bringing it to her media. The others just take her reread and remake it.
3- Who's involved: We know Madonna is hands on when it comes to her research and ideas, but not every other pop girl is like that, most of the times they just follow the vision of the director, photographer, coreographer etc... Remember that those people are not pop freaks like us who knows what Madonna wore in a photoshoot in 1987, how Grace Jones openned her 1982 tour or how Cher dressed for the 84th episode from her TV show.

The Madonna photoshoot was done in late 99, before Britney's was released, they probably shot them at the same time.
The discoball is probably just a coincidence. I doubt she mined Britney's entrance from five years before. She probably barely remembered it, if she ever saw it. Britney's career was mostly dead in '05 thanks to Kevin Federline, among other things. If Madonna had the discoball entrance in Drowned World I might have agreed with you.
And honestly if she did copy, she did it far better
You could do things like this for a million artists, including Madonna. I am sure I could make a case for Madonna copying other people for everything she ever did

I know many don't like Christopher Ciccone and don't believe his version of the story, still I found reading his book very very interesting. I just found a link to download his book online, for those who haven't read it yet:

Nothing more than typical consipracy theory bullshit for the (sadly) mentally ill, religious fundamentalists, and extremes of all ideologies - particularly those of the far right.
As with all conspiracy theories, they take elements of truths and mix them into their own twisted, fucked-up narratives that have been circling for ages.
Sadly, with social media, and particularly Youtube (which is now conspiracy theory central), these ideas that were once relegated to only the fringe have now gained more mainstream attention, and the masses (that are already grossly misinformed and not well educated) start to fall down the rabbit hole of believing batshit insane things without a shred of evidence because, well, confirmation bias is one hell of a motherfucker.  Sadly, for those who go too far down this hole, there is often the issue of heavy mental illness at play.
As for these current narratives being spread right now, they're usually from heavily religious, far-right wing types (Trump's base, essentially) that already has a deep disdain, and fear, of the "elite" of society, that is somehow the reason for all their problems...all the while they see someone like Trump as their savior. How...ironic.

    Hi guys!
Now that we are officially in a Madonna drought and also self isolating because of coronavirus I have decided to launch my Madonna YouTube channel. Each week I will be covering a new era in a little 5-10 minute documentary starting with the Madonna era in 1983. So far I have edited a segment for each era in the 80's and it includes everything from albums, tours, films etc. There are 22 segments for the 80's in total and of course I hope to do the rest in time. The idea of this page is to share her history with casual and new fans and also of course for us long term fans to enjoy a trip down memory lane. It will feature lots of interviews, rare clips, interviews with other people involved in her projects etc. I hope you all enjoy it! And thank you to everyone on this forum who have shared videos over the years as a lot of the content has come from here and I couldn't have done it without you. Sorry that I probably can't credit you all individually as that would involve knowing who each video came from and its kind of impossible. But thank you!
Before I launch it I am trying to get more followers and have made a little trailer which covers her entire career in a 1 minute clip. Hope nobody has an anxiety attack watching it!

EDIT: I will be posting full episodes on Vimeo

THIS! I just can’t even explain... I feel I’m wasting my time. People must learn to read history & search for facts more often... we can’t even compare our days with the past! A success in the 80’s & 90’s = PURE physical sales & actually fans really paying MONEY for music... can’t even start with how lame is the current trends... ?

The people who write Madonna off would be the same people to put acts that are just as great but not nearly as successful as ABOVE her. Even though she has outlasted EVERY SINGLE ONE of them. Just think of all the acts that used to dominate the radio/charts that have come and gone... She is the only one who remains besides a handful like Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. There are so many acts that these people or your friend either don't know about or have forgotten that just put it all in perspective. Anyone remember when Hootie and the Blowfish were played 24/7. Or Dave Matthew's Band. Limp Biscuit. The Prodigy? Salt N Peppa.... En Vogue, Boys II Men... Sheryl Crow, Shania Twain?? WHOLE GENRES have come and gone and yet she remains. Grunge, trip hop, New Jack Swing, Boy bands... Huge artists like TLC, Lauren Hill, Mya, Missy Elliot, Phil Collins, Paula Abdul, No Doubt...not to mention all the other flavors of the month that are too countless to name. Many who were stated to be the next Madonna.
Its so easy to hear 4 decades in the business and just write it off... because they don't know what it actually means.
I haven't actually done this... but I wonder if we looked at Best Album and Best Song Grammy winners from he past, how many are currently successful now. I would imagine not many.

What made her better than everyone else for me ? These 3 things when put together...
    1. She was a dancer first so she could move better than most other artists
    2. She was daring and not afraid to change her look, style and sound, and learn when most artists stick to what sells and what they know
    3. She has intelligence and humour

What kills me is the hypocrisy.  When she dies (hopefully not for 50 more years!), just watch all the accolades and tributes roll in from all the people hating on her now.  They did it with MJ and to a lesser extent with Prince and David Bowie, saying that they were over, they were weird, their music was irrelevant, whatever the complaint was at any given time.  Then when they died, everyone was falling over themselves to talk about how brilliant they were.  Idiots.

This type of denigration stems mostly from sexism. The Brits and the Americans hate women who do not fall into patriarchal submission.

Tell your friend that while Madonna might not have had a million seller in the UK, she did have 63 TOP 10 hits. That's SIXTY THREE - more than twice what Beatles managed. If marketing and hype was all that was needed to maintain this type of success, we would still be talking about Debbie Gibson, Transvision Vamp, Sophie B. Hawkins or whoever else was touted as the "new Madonna" at one time or another.
For a lot of people in our society to admit that Madonna is talented would be to admit that a woman can be sexual AND smart/gifted at the same time. We're not brought up to see women that way and those who challenge this are seen a threat that some people instinctively want to shut up and dismiss by saying their success is all marketing or that they slept their way to the top.

Madonna doesn't go out of her way to be liked, like most other artists. She'll never beg for acceptance. The GP find her off-putting for her attitude or behaviour, but for many of her fans, her feistiness and strength is endearing. I'd rather she be real and unpopular than fake and be loved by everyone.
