I adore this album. It came out during a difficult time in my teenage years. After the coldness of Erotica, I was floored by I'll Remember which in many ways was laying the ground for the softened image that would follow with Secret. I was a teenage boy extremely besotted with a young priest... That's all I can say. And Bedtime Stories was an album we shared a love for. He gave me a tape of it, and my lord, I'd listen to Take A Bow obsessively because I felt it spoke to me. As did Love Tried To Welcome Me, which I always felt referenced my favourite book; The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, by Carson McCullers. Always imagined the video with footage from the black and white Versace shoot at that beautiful mansion in that old Hollywood glamour. It was like the lyrics was our secret language, but I was a naive school boy with a hopeless crush, seeing things that weren't there.

So again which cover was the original and which is the rare one? Why they changed the direction tho?

It was a mistake in printing.  It wasn't caught until after the fact.  I think it's kinda cool that it happened.  It makes that version a more of a collectible.  :)

I LOVE this interview, for all its awkwardness.

I don’t think it’s awkward at all.

I only ever saw Ruby in this interview and thought she was sweet until I saw a video of her interviewing Sandra Bernhardt and Ruby was MEAN.

This goes to show that Madonna intimidated Ruby immensely so I think Ruby was treading the entire interview, but I adore it.

I always loved the interview. I was a bit surprised Ruby took issue with it.  Yes, Madonna was definitely running the show, and I guess that is why she felt it sorta got away from what she probably imagined to be.  Still, from a fan's perspective it really did become more than just a standard interview. It had some meat and potatoes as well as very entertaining.

Agree 100%. This interview says “it’s Madonna’s world and Ruby Wax is lucky to be living in it”! 😆

Love this album so much!

Went with Secret for song, I just adore it (will she ever include it on a tour again? It’s long overdue!)

My god, we were eating so well with the videos in this era. All 4 of them are top tier, there is really no wrong choice. I went with Human Nature cause I’m pretty sure I realized I was gay while watching this back in middle school. Still think the costumes, choreography, and cinematography are some of her best work today.

Upside down cover for sure! Would looove to have that version on vinyl.

Always dreamed of a Bedtime Stories tour, outside of the singles, what songs do you think she would have performed? Would love to have a live Love Tried To Welcome Me performance.

I am holding out on buying BS on vinyl until they release a variant with her face upside down (the photo the correct orientation, regardless of whether or not it is the “correct” version). 😆

Not that she’s ever been big on performing b-sides live, but I would have loved a live performance of “Let Down Your Guard”. It would have even made a great interlude leading into “Human Nature”.

And you’re so correct, all the videos from this era were top tier. If I were to be greedy, I would have loved some more remixes of “Take A Bow”, or even some of the album tracks getting a remix treatment as a b-side.

I fucking love this album, always have. It also came out at a very spacial time in my life.

Then again, every album of hers marks a special time in my life.

I was hoping to remix the full album in time for the 30th anniversary but timing isn't on my side. There's a fully done Secret remix and a remix mash up of Love Tried To Welcome Me from the early 2000's where I merged it with  a Ricardo Villalobos track. I'll clean that one up and post them soon.

Currently I'm trying to redo I'd Rather Be Your Lover.

Here's my Survival ambient remix and the Popular Survival mash up remix.

I still believe the album should have started with  Sanctuary/Bedtime Story as they feel out of place at the end of the album especially with Take A bow following. It's the album from her golden years with what i feel to be a wrong tracking, only Madame X and Rebel Heart are worst  (the latter being the worst of them as it looks a collection of random songs without cohesion)

And even though she's gorgeous and the color treatment is wonderful, to me, the photo is not album cover material striking. Maybe because The Face had the photoshoot revealed before the album release..I much prefer the Roversi one even if she's not as pretty as on the Demarchelier one, there's something eerie about it that connects to the album more.

Speaking of the photoshoot (that happened at her Miami house on the day of her birthday) the blue slip dress she wears reminds me of Michelle Pfeiffer's one in Scarface and i wonder if that wasn't the inspiration behind it, because it was in Miami and she was hanging with real life gangsters like Haitian Jack.

While I don't necessarily agree, I do appreciate your perspective on it.  I know some just aren't into this album, which is okay and we all have our favorites.  But it's interesting to read how you felt the tracklisting should have been different as well as the cover art.  Also, thank you for taking part in the poll!  Much appreciated!  :luv:

I think the order of tracks is the best it could be with what it is. She was going in 2 different directions. It’s actually remarkable how well it does flow all things considering.

I do sometimes wonder what could have been if she’d gone in the Bjork Post type direction only. That album is absolutely brilliant and Madonna doing something solely in that vein could have been amazing. I think songs like Secret and Human Nature could have been reworked to fit that vibe.

Sanctuary is more like a Deep Forest vibe than a Post vibe... It's giving Sweet Lullaby. I wish she made more songs like Bedtime Story... ugh my little gay ass would have been in heaven.

Weakest video is SECRET. Song is amazing. Video is quite solid, actually… BUT:

Both TAKE A BOW (3rd best clip) and HUMAN NATURE (very solid in second place) easily eclipse it.

BEDTIME STORY rules ALL. Killer video of a killer track that paved the way to RAY OF LIGHT several years later.

SANCTUARY is the best non single on the record. Just love it to death. Wish it had been the 5th single for the remixes alone.
