All of Madonna's film roles, ranked:

Pop icon Madonna celebrates her birthday today, and what better time to look at her rather illustrious film career? While she’s certainly made an effort at being a movie star, Madonna’s acting career has been rocky at best. For every A League of Their Own, there’s quite a few flops and clunkers. But hey, you can’t blame her for giving it a shot! Here, we rank her movies from the best to the absolute most dreadful.

'A League of Their Own'

Madonna played “All The Way†Mae in this fictional retelling of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which satisfied the country’s need for pro baseball during World War II. At times comedic, and at times tragic, A League of Their Own features what is definitely her most realistic and heartfelt screen moment.

'Madonna: Truth or Dare'

Madonna turned the rock documentary genre on its head with Madonna: True or Dare, a film that followed her on her 1990 Blonde Ambition Tour and caused plenty of controversy (as Madonna is wont to do) with its frank sexual nature. It remains, still, one of the best music docs of all time.

'Desperately Seeking Susan'

Madonna’s big-screen debut still ranks as one of her best roles (although, let’s face it, it’s not like she was delivering many Oscar-worthy performances).Desperately Seeking Susan helped Madonna become a mainstream star — and it established her as a fashion icon.

'Evita'

Alan Parker directed Madonna (alongside Antonio Banderes) in this big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical about the rise and fall of Argentinian First Lady Eva Peron, which earned her a Golden Globe win. She was snubbed, however, when it came to the Oscar nominations that year, mostly because — let’s face it — this movie wasn’t that great.

'Dick Tracy'

Madonna played a femme fatale in this big-screen adaptation of the comic strip Dick Tracy, directed (and starring) Madonna’s one-time paramour Warren Beatty. Madonna also shared the screen with Al Pacino; if that wasn’t enough, her companion album was a major success as it included arguably her biggest hit, “Vogue.â€

'Blue in the Face'

Wayne Wang’s companion piece to his comedy-drama Smoke had many big-name stars making appearances, including Madonna, who turned up on set playing a singing telegram girl.

'Shadows and Fog'

Taking cues from German expressionism, Woody Allen directed Madonna alongside, well, actually talented actors like Kathy Bates, John Cusack, Mia Farrow, and John Malkovich in this less-than-cheery thriller based on Allen’s play, the unfortunately titled Death.

'Girl 6'

Madonna plays the proprietor of a phone sex line in Spike Lee‘s comedy about an aspiring actress who takes a job as a phone sex operator after struggling to find acting gigs. (Is it much of a stretch for the star who was so used to selling sex as part of her performance?)

'Die Another Day'

Not only did Madonna land the gig singing the theme song, she also had a cameo in this James Bond flick — Pierce Brosnan’s last as the M16 agent — as Verity, a fencing instructor. She was, perhaps, overshadowed by recent Oscar winner Halle Berry.

10 'Four Rooms’

Posted Image

In this anthology film directed by four directors (including Quentin Tarantinoand Robert Rodriguez), Madonna stars in a segment directed by Allison Anders as a member of a coven of witches desperately seeking one final ingredient for a powerful potion: semen, naturally. (Strangely, this was not related to Madonna’s infamous Sex book.)

11 'Who's That Girl?'

Posted Image

Madonna plays a spunky, free-spirited ex-con (aren’t they all?) who convinces an uptight lawyer to help her expunge her criminal record. Naturally, she teaches him how to cut loose and have a good time.

12 'The Next Best Thing'

Posted Image

John Schlesinger directed Madonna and Rupert Everett in this tedious flop, which focused on a woman who decides to have a child with her best gay friend.

13 'Shanghai Surprise'

Posted Image

Appearing alongside her first husband, Sean Penn, Madonna stars as — of all things — a nurse at a missionary in China. When she meets up with a fortune teller played by Penn, she gets involved in a drug ring in this poorly received adventure comedy.

14 'Bloodhounds of Broadway'

Posted Image

Like Four Rooms, this film features four interconnected stories which, like the movie itself, are pretty forgettable — save for the duet between Madonna and Jennifer Grey.

15 'Body of Evidence'

Posted Image

This notoriously awful erotic thriller, which received an NC-17 rating, featured Madonna as a femme fatale alongside some actually accomplished actors (like Willem Dafoe and Julianne Moore), who likely wish this clunker weren’t listed on their IMDb pages.

16 'Swept Away'

Madonna’s husband Guy Ritchie made the unfortunate mistake of directing her in this unnecessary remake of the classic film from director Lina Wertmüller. Whereas Wertmüller’s film was a provocative film, Ritchie’s remake was an embarrassment — and it was also Madonna’s last starring film role.
