No joke, I once read in a news magazine in the late 80s that Madonna was, quite literally, more universally recognized than the Bible.

How do people determine that thing about cars? Is it because her fans are all riding horses?
It’s one thing to dislike her (believe me I do), but to pretend she’s not a megastar at this point is just silly. She has reached the Madonna level of fame and popularity. She may even surpass her. I don’t want it to be true. But it is.

I mean, first she's accused of having insane fans who spend all their days streaming her music and spending tons of money on her tickets and merchandise, but then, at the same time, she has to buy streams and "nobody is playing her music loud in the cars". I mean, which is it? The insane fans are not insane enough to play her music with rolled down car windows? Make it make sense.

I really am not a swiftie but I don’t believe for a second her streams are “paid for” by the record company. There’s just no way. Her popularity is undeniable. And she’s also selling loads of physical vinyls.

The styling for this shoot is so on point. The virginal white wedding dress contrasted with the “Boy Toy” belt buckle.  Even the dress itself, reminiscent of tradition but with the sex factor turned all the way up… it’s just screams Madonna.

When I saw the Stonewall appearance, I assumed it was just some padding, but once I saw it in fishnets at the ‘21 VMAs I was alarmed!

It seems to look okay when there’s fabric draped over it but in anything skintight the proportions are off. Like the Versace bodysuit on the Celebration tour. Looks great from the front, but from the side… 👀 

The only appearance of hers I found truly shocking was I think at Stonewall right before the drop of Madame X, when her butt was so giant I was sure she had some sort of prosthetic in there. The worst possible camera angle was used too. 

She has 0 cultural impact. Standing with a guitar singing about your ex has the cultutal impact of a pigeon on a roof. Shania Twain had way more charisma and personnality than her. She's the blandest succesful singer ever.

Exactly. I think Taylor is more respected and more safe than Madonna. She’s family friendly. So she has that on her side. But in the longer term I think it will make her “cultural impact” seem less significant. She hasn’t really brought anything new to the table that other artists or women haven’t done before. She’s not really changing the landscape at all.

Taylor Swift has been popular for a long time but she only really has 2 peaks in popularity.
The 1989 era. And now this last period of The Eras Tour. (Basically the last 2 years.)
So to say her peak is longer than Madonna’s is just not accurate.
I think comparing the impact of the 2 is very difficult because they come from different eras and are very different. It’s like comparing The Beatles to Michael Jackson.
But yes in terms of fame and popularly she is as big as Madonna for this generation. The way fans respond to a pop star is also extremely different now so it is tricky to compare. In my eyes Madonna and MJ seem more popular than Taylor by far. But it’s comparing apples and oranges so I don’t know. Social media is very different to thousands chasing you at an airport.
