¿Quién Es Esa Niña? vs. The Beautiful Island

La Isla bonita by far :om:

Simply magical, one of the best songs I have EVER heard, and probably Madonna's biggest signature song worldwide.

Actually, I think that goes to LIKE A PRAYER. I'd even put "Holiday", "Vogue" and "Like a Virgin" before Isla being her "biggest signature song worldwide".

Liam, that depends on the generation you're talking about. For example, my mom and her sister used to love La Isla Bonita, and they're over 50 years old. I'd say La Isla Bonita is more famous than Holiday or Vogue for Latinamerican people who are not casual listeners of mainstream anglo pop music and are not interested in knowing which songs were #1s lmao

I love both La Isla and Who's that Girl and I wish the latter was performed in the near future.

Yes Like a prayer, Holiday and Vogue are up there too, but I'm talking about the general public, people who may not necessarily be into music, other countries continents who do not speak english :)

It doesn't have anything to do with commercial success or controversy, it's one of those songs that grabs your attention when you listen to it. I remember when I was a child and heard it on teh radio for the first time, I thought It was a new song because it sounded so fresh, then my older sister told it was done like 20 years ago :drama:

That wouldn't necessarily be a "generation" but rather a regional difference. Of course, I can understand why Latin America and fans in specific would feel more drawn to her Latin/spanish songs just as much as I can understand how Argentina would get excited over her performing "Don't Cry For Me Argentina."

Though I thought we were speaking more about in GENERAL. I still belive, "Like A Prayer", "Holiday", and "Vogue" are generally more accepted as a signature song of hers. I think one reason why "Isla" has become a more popular song in the last decade is because she pretty much pulls this song out on every other tour. Also, I get the impression Madonna loves this song and since she loves Latin flavored music, she likes to perform this one since it's her most popular Latin influence song.

That's what I'm speaking of.... "general public". It's pretty safe to say "Like A Prayer" is probably the one song most general people (not fans) think of when they are asked to name a Madonna song. Of course, younger generations, may come up with more newer songs, and I suspect "Ray of Light" would come up a lot too, but I don't believe "La Isla Bonita" would be the top song people would associate with Madonna... at least not before songs like "Ray of Light", "Like A Prayer", "Vogue", and "Holiday".  Of course, "Like A Virgin" would probably be considered more of her signature song as well as "Material Girl" before "La Isla Bonita".

Though, I can understand how certain "regions" and even certain age groups would associate certain songs to be more of her signature song, but again, I can't imagine "La Isla Bonita" being one of them, unless we're talking about Latin America.

But how many latinos are there in the US? I don't think she recorded that song only as a tribute to people from Spain or Mexico. I also remember it being included as a bonus track in Japan when Something to Remember was released, and Japan does not have ANYTHING to do with Latin music :Madonna003:

Again, I am referring to the claim that "Isla" is Madonna's "biggest signature" song. Sure, it's probably really popular in the Latin American communities, but in general, I think "La Isla Bonita" wouldn't probably come up in general conversaion long after many other songs such as "Like a Prayer", "Vogue", "Holiday", "Like A Virgin", "Material Girl", Ray of Light", and probably even "Hung Up". Once again, I"m referring as in "general".. signature songs.

I don't percieve La Isla Bonita being more popular here in Argentina than her other 80s songs... I hear Live To Tell, Holiday and Crazy For You the most I think.

So it's safe to say,  "La Isla Bonita" is probably not the first song most people in the general public would think of (even in Latin regions) when asked when naming a Madonna song or first song one would think of when refering to Madonna?

Well, I never sad La Isla was her global signature song but sure it is one of them. We agree to disagree and that's fine. :Madonna029:

Didn't say you did. Though, I don't entirely disagree "Isla" hasn't become one of her global signature hits. I think it has over the past decade, specifically because she's performed it live so much. Though, I believe the general public would name off a number of her other hits before getting to this one when it comes to "signature hits". That's all I was getting at.  :Madonna030:

I always thought Like a prayer, Holiday and La Isla bonita are her biggest worldwide known and loved hits.

I've done this little test on google, it's not really accurate but does somehow reflect the reality. La Isla bonita comes in 2nd or 3rd place if you consider the whole graph

I'm curious how was the test conducted? What question was asked to get your answers?

It's not a questionaire :)

Basically it's how many times people search for certain keywords on google = popularity over time. This represents worldwide data, and knowing that 90%+ searches are done through google, it's pretty much reliable.

Just because it's been search 29 times, doesn't make it known as her biggest signature song. In fact, if we go by your data to correlate what is her signature song, my thoughts were correct that LAP is actually her biggest signature song. But again, data on how much a song is searched, doesn't equate to her biggest signature song. After all, if you perform data on what is searched the most on the internet, you can bet, a lot of nonsensical topics or people will come up first.... such as Kim Kardashian or Porn, and so on.

Lol, that's not 29 times ^^, the number is obtained by normalizing the search volume for each word, so it actually represents millions and millions of searches from all around the world. You're right about porn, sex, and things like kim kardashian..etc, they are indeed in the top; but do you think people will still be searching for kim kardashian within 30 years from now, I don't think so

The point is, you can't base her signature song based on how much it's been searched. There are plenty of possibiities why that song has been searched higher than others. My whole point here is challenging the idea that based on GENERAL consensus, not based on Madonna fan's favorite songs, that La Isla Bonita isn't her biggest signature song.  I don't doubt that La Isla Bonita has become one of her well known signature songs since Madonna has performed it live a lot, but I don't believe it's even in the top 5 songs the general public will mention when asked what songs they know by Madonna.
