Are these considered ballad songs?

I have a question regarding some of M's greatest songs. Are they considered ballads or not? I have my own opinion, but would like some feedback/knowledge on this!!

 

01. Secret? / I think no

02. Frozen?/ I think yes

03. Drowned World? i think yes

04. What It Feels Like For A Girl (album version)? i think no

05. Miles Away? i think no

 

please help me out!!

i think you have the wrong idea of what a ballad is :)

 

I'd say 3,4,5 are the ballads.

I think it all depends on what you feel is considered a "ballad", per-say. Ballads don't always have to be slow, mellow tunes. They can have uptempo beats or even heavy rock (Take for example Bon Jovi, Livin On A Prayer). I actually think all 5 could be considered ballads, albeit in different forms of musical genre's. :)

I always think of romantic love songs as ballads for the most part. The songs you listed seem more complex to me. The closest one in my opinion would be Miles Away and I do not even consider that a ballad.

 

That is my personal opinion on ballads. Not sure what the official criteria for a ballad is.

If they are not ballads, how should they be labelled? They are certainly not uptempo songs, although maybe they are not the typical slow love song ballad. WIFLFAG actually is, although the arrangement is electronic, and the same for Miles Away. But imo all 5 are ballads. The arrangement makes them unconventional ballads. But look at these cover versions:
