Exactly.  Sorry was another song I loved and thought should have been a huge top 10 hit for her in the U.S.  But at this time, corporate radio stations were hating on Madonna. They refused to play a lot of her new music by then.  Of course, some of the bigger cities still did so because they had a lot of dance oriented stations, but smaller states and communities never heard these songs on the radio. 
Die Another Day was the last song I heard on my top 40 radio stations on a regular basis. It wasn't until "4 Minutes" was release I head Madonna on the radio again. After that, nothing!

I think very similar regarding U.S Charts.  The fact Into The Groove didn't score a #1 in the U.S. was highway robbery.  The fact it didn't ge a physical single, kept it from doing so.  Beautiful Stranger suffered the same fate. 
But let's remember some of the biggest and iconic songs never reached #1 if even top 10.  Madonna's "Holiday" is one of her most well known and iconic song but upon it's initial release, it didn't even reach top 10.  It took a couple re-releases before that happened in certain regions.

Unfortunately, that wasn't done in Madonna's favor.  Trust me, American Pie was hardly on the U.S. minds when Madonna released it, other than some hard core fans.  I wish I could say different. because it's one of her greatest vocals.  The only savior she had was that Don Mclean complimented her version, but that was long after a lot of criticism.

Yes take a look at the American Pie video which was filmed nearly around the time the Superbowl took place.  My guess she could have been further along than she knew being that Rocco was due in October, but as you know doctors aren't always precise.  She obviously had complications and had him in August, but we do see a bit of a bump in that video.  Still, she was very active, so I can't see why she would pull out due to her pregnancy.  Anyway, it makes sense she declined to her busty schedule with her in the studio recording MUSIC.
 

Ahh that makes sense. It was more successful in the UK.  Pretty wild being an American classic and it figures that the U.S. wasn't too appreciative to it her version.  At the end of the day, I think she sounds lovely on the song and I actually like her vocals on it better than the original.

It's been highly reported that she was supposed to perform but backed out due to recording commitments. Her manager Carese at the time issued a statement that she just wouldn't have enough time to put together a performance that would be up to the standards of the Superbowl.  I'm actually glad she didn't perform it because her version of "American Pie" really got a lot of mixed reception and I'd think she would have gotten ridiculed for it.  And these years later, we now know she really never wanted to record the song.  Rupert Everrett talked her into it.  I don't think she was really that happy with it either.  Though, I will say she sounds wonderful singing her version of it.  But I can understand why she brushes that song off now. It's really not her cup of tea.

Oh I know that Cleopatra entrance was incredible that imagery was gorgeous the aesthetics everything was so mighty and it brought her into the 2010s massively! 
So so good and I remember so many hating on her before she performed I was just willing her to do amazing and it was just unreal the energy she put into it when you see artists in their 30s and 40s today feel like they're timing it down or basic choreo ....there she was 54 just owning it

Oh yes, Madonna is her 11th cousin, according to genealogy researchers at Ancestry.com. The two are linked through a common 10th great-grandfather – a Frenchman named Martin Aucoin.

Madonna's mom is descendants of French - Canadians.  What interesting she's related to Celine Dion. Madonna's mother descends from Jean Guyon. The two singers are 10th cousins twice removed through him, and 10th cousins once removed through another ancestor, Zacharie Cloutier. 
Anyway, I really can't hear anything too influenced (musically) from her Mom's heritage.  But she somewhat followed in her mother's interests.   While Madonna's mom was the typical stay at home mom, but she excelled at school, sang in the Glee Club and was a cheerleader during High school.

I agree I remember staying up late at night to watch it live here in the UK on whatever website was sharing it it was a HUGE deal watching her half time show in 2012 ! Heck it helped carry her MDNA album promo massively and was incredibly significant ....despite nerves and adrenaline it was incredible ...in her 50s owning it ....I miss it
I honestly think Madonna could have done 2002 BUT it would've made sense post 9/11 and that horrific change in landscape since that day 
She paid tribute on DWT to that horrifying day in history but it would've been a colossal deal to perform it at the superbowl ...just imagine that 
As for her tours Reinvention was the first time she acknowledged her hits but I do feel if she just wanted new stuff then her focus like ROL should've been push more bits and videos in Music album and for American Life to make sure each song hit the cultural g spot over and over again to ensure that lots of newer material got pushed out there
