  5. When I woke up today, I didn't plan on making this post. I was actually fine. September 9th. My mother's birthday. She passed away 5 years ago from breast cancer. The time between her diagnosis and dying was 5 months. She had no chance, it was too late and she made her peace with it, refusing chemo and choosing to be at home being administered morphine. She passed away the morning after my birthday, living just long enough to give me that day. Today, on her birthday, I was fine. But I couldn't stop thinking about Promise To Try. That scene in Truth or Dare where she lay on her mother's grave, talking to her and wondering what she looked like now. And I broke like a piece of glass... And that's how the day kept going. Little by little, the song kept playing in my head..."will she see me cry when I stumble and fall"... And every day I do stumble and fall, but I keep getting up, even when at times I just feel like laying there. "Keep your head held high, ride like the wind, never look behind". And I try to keep going and never dwell on the past. Never feel nostalgic, keep moving forward, never stay one thing too long and never let anyone feel sorry for you. "Can't kiss her goodbye, but I promise to try". I tell myself I can let go, that I don't need to be comforted by tales of heaven and angels. That I'm ok with death being the end of it will help me find that closure. That I need to let her go. "But it feels like a lie". And it kept playing in my head. Bringing me to tears each time today. Just one song. The power of Madonna's writing and vocal delivery, emoting so much. Intricate simplicity. Grief. A universal feeling we can all understand, but perhaps only mire so with this song if you've experienced losing your mother. I don't need to listen to Madonna's songs everyday. I'm no longer a teenager in the early 90s. I've been there and done all of that. I grew up with her music in the 80s. But I feel I've lived through her music; I've sat on a plane fleeing an abusive situation with "You'll See" playing in mind, giving me the strength I needed. I've left home at an early age with "Oh Father" in my head saying "you can't hurt me now". I've gone place to place trying to find safety with "Drowned World" (travelled round the world, looking for a home). But today, Promise To Try hurt a little more than it usually did. No, I don't need to listen to her music every day. I can go months without playing her songs as I get on with my life. I don't need to do any of those things because I can just think of her songs and I experience them because they've had a lifetime to bury themselves deep within me, waiting for the right moments to burst forward.

  6. She has number 1 records and songs, and high grossing tours. Shes successful. No doubt about that. But her artistry and creative expression is not in the same league. And there will always be that distinction. So no, she has not surpassed Madonna.

  7. Can Taylor just stay home 🏡. She is just uninteresting musically.. I guess we can use her fans for a hit though

  8. I haven't come across any discussions about a documentary on The Celebration Tour. However, I found two videos that seem to be related to it. What do you think? Could we be seeing this on a streaming platform soon? https://www.instagram.com/reel/C_N2PxEix2j/?igsh=MXExeXVrYXg2cmNyMg== https://www.instagram.com/reel/C_OPNa_oEJO/?igsh=MW04bzEzdWhwb2tpNw==

  11. Like A Virgin (the song) turns 40 on October 31, (The album) on November 12. It was such an iconic moment in Madonna's career when everything suddenly happened and she became the HIT girl! It all started at the Keith Haring birthday party (called The Party of Life) on May 16 at The Paradise Garage New York where Madonna could already showcase both the title track and Dress You Up in an advance of 6 months to the actual release of the album delayed due to the late success of Lucky Star on the US billboard charts that August 1984. So what follows that May 1984 is Madonna's face becoming more and more familiar to Mtv viewers which starts playing Borderline and Lucky Star non stop and interviewing her. Up until August 84 when Madonna attends a NYC music seminar immortalized by Mtv as well... Finally up to September 14 1984 when the world would get face to face to Madonna's powerful sexy performance of Like A Virgin at the very first Mtv Video Music awards (well as we know we also got face to face to her panties!) The Like A Virgin album produced by Chic's Nile Rodgers would be presented at a New York City party (guest would include Jean Michel Basquiat, Warhol, Keith Haring, John Jellybean Benitez Madonna's then boyfriend etc) on November 7, 1984 at the Private Eyes nightclub. https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckjd7I7OucJ During December 1984 Madonna also took Uk by storm performing Like A Virgin on Top Of ThE Pops , but what would follow in 1985 would be a roar turning every girl on the planet into a Madonna wannabe filled with laces, bras, rubber bracelets and most of all crucifixes... the Madonna mania was just exploding taking Madonna to promote the album in Japan and in April to a North American tour (The Virgin tour). as for the single ... Chart Peak #1 1984/12/22 Debut #48 1984/11/17 Weeks Of Chart 19 Weeks Of #1 6 Weeks Of Top10 9 Weeks Of Top20 11 Weeks Of Top40 14 The cover sleeve and album insert images were shot by Steven Meisel (who would photograph Madonna later in 1992 on her Sex book) Feel free to add anything such as sensations, videos and lots of love and appreciation on Madonna's Iconic Like A Virgin era

  12. I think she's probably extra bitter that Madonna did do such a good job with Evita despite otherwise being a generally bad actress. There are so many worse singer-actors and yet, for 25 years, Madonna is still on the tip of her tongue at all times.

  13. It's not easy. My mother died last October way too soon and it takes much much less than anything specific to make me cry at a moments notice. I always felt bad for Madonna after learning about her mother dying, but I realize now that I could in no way understand what she really felt. And even now, in my position, I actually still can't understand completely because I had so much more time with my mother than she did. Her loss must feel so much more like something missing, something she never had then something she had, cherished, took for granted at times, and then ultimately lost. Thanks for sharing

  14. Just a rumour I've seen on twitter/X about a song on The Weeknd's upcoming album called "Holy Dance" which is supposedly a collaboration with him, Madonna & Taylor Swift. Anyone have any insider information on this?

  17. She has 0 cultural impact. Standing with a guitar singing about your ex has the cultutal impact of a pigeon on a roof. Shania Twain had way more charisma and personnality than her. She's the blandest succesful singer ever.

  19. Evita is really the only Andrew Lloyd Webber musical to succeed as a film. So she must have done something right.

  20. Oh, Patti Putone again. One of those, like Ruby Wax, that only make the headlines when they talk s**t about Madonna, when their link with her has been MINIMAL. Sad souls. This is what people see when they think of Evita in fiction: Get over it, Putone. It's been almost 30 years already.

  21. Patti is a bitter, old hag who can’t get over the fact that Madonna nailed Evita. She tears her performance in it down every time she gets the chance, even after admitting she has never seen it. She is insufferable.

  22. Soooo should we should get this thread back on its track or what? I'll start Any news on DYU? Why is the Like a Prayer album so quiet? Is Borderline 7'' Edit the same as Borderline It's That Girl? Do you think we're getting OYH 7'' Edit? Is MDNA as bad as everyone says? Who's Emily?

  23. Do we understand that, at more than five years since her last album, the most exciting thing for us is to wait for the first of october and see the tracklist of an anniversary limited edition of a 30 years old album so we could check if maybe we will really get one or - but only if we are very very lucky - two old unreleased songs ...

  31. As a product, yes. As a cultural phenomenon? No. And the world we live today doesn't allow the likes of Madonna and Michael Jackson to exist anymore.

  32. Supposedly "True Blue" would be next. The original single release was September 29, 1986, so around the end of this month.

  33. But she's not wrong in what she says. Madonna can't act. However, I do think that she's wrong about Madonna in Evita. Obviously, there's more to the bitterness than we know. Something behind the scenes where Madonna pissed her off. And Patti is definitely a great actress. I've seen her in a number of things, and she's always been far more believable as an actress than Madonna.

  38. This is a very interesting thing! Did you already know this? From Discogs: Side A of disc one was pressed incorrectly and instead plays four unknown Hip Hop songs by another artist instead of "Candy Shop", "4 Minutes" and "Give It 2 Me" as noted in the album's track listing. From the most recent comment: SIDE A CONTENTS FOUND! they seem to be from this release. https://www.discogs.com/release/1486276-Various-Gems-EP-3rd-Impact 16 year old mystery solved! https://www.discogs.com/es/release/6239056-Madonna-Hard-Candy

  44. Musically 4 Minutes is brilliant. I just kinda dislike the Justin bits even though I actually dig Justin. Medellin was beaut but undercooked a tad. Britney one is still one of the worst things she's done. I like her Dua verse on Levitating a lot. Sam Smith is mid and gimmicky Popular are the definition of mid background coffee shop music. Love Song should have been so much more for the star power I do love Be Careful with Ricky Martin but again it's very unshowy. Sexy Santana, Tokishca, Anita, Sickick, hard pass.
