People forget that he gave her one hit single that if it hadn’t contained a famous ABBA sample it would have bombed. That’s the only song the general public remembers from that album. The same goes for the likes of Mirwais. Djs rarely make compelling music. She needs songwriters. Stuart’s music always sounds outdated and way too thin. Anyway, she did all she could do with him. If she wants to be lazy and continue repeating herself, so be it.

Would’ve bombed?

Considering I’d never heard that ABBA song until AFTER Hung Up came out tells me otherwise.

Gimme Gimme Gimme was no Dancing Queen.

No, the whole album was a sucess, together with Confessions tour and everything they worked together during those years have stood test of time. The sample is one part of the equation...

Personally I much prefer Medellin to the faceless dance bops some fans have been hankering for for 19 long years. People forget the artist who made Confessions and True Blue also made Music and American Life.

It's always a tell-tale sign when people group Madame X with MDNA and Rebel Heart, as though they are remotely similar or comparable in any way beyond being released in the same decade. The level of artistry, direction, discernment, quality control, inspiration of Madame X couldn't be further from MDNA, Rebel Heart or Hard Candy. Those who understand Madame X know it's a younger slightly confused sibling to Ray of Light, Music and American Life.

Why are you always so passive aggressive?

I can see why you are a Gaga fan

Saying that you never heard of Gimme Gimme Gimme until Hung Up is your personal experience and your anecdotal evidence, not a sign that it wasn't a big hit. Madonna mede the effort to secure the sample because the song was a major, instantly recognizable hit.

I never said it wasn’t a big hit.

I literally said I had never heard of it before Hung Up.

I'd rather have Madonna and Stuart sampling tunes from the 70s-90s over anything Nicki Minaj and Dua Lipa have done.

I don't believe Madonna will ever make a strictly care free dance album ever again. You have to be extremely tone deaf these days for that and she is not.

I'm looking forward to whatever beautiful ballad the death of her brother is going to inspire. Her Instagram tribute was already so beautiful, if she pours those feelings into lyrics, it's gonna be so amazing.

I have to agree that it's very possible a song about her brother could turn up on her next album.  But knowing her, she makes it a dance anthem.  He deserves it!!

Agreed. COADF was a definite critical success (and IMO the last album that worked 100% even with “I love NY”) though the singles didn’t chart as I’m guessing as high as she wanted. The tour was undoubtedly a huge success. Hung up is such a funny hybrid since she’s recycling the lyrics from love song and the ABBA samples. Actually was never a big ABBA listener didn’t know the sample but I understand it worked on a musical and thematic level for the album. The remixes I’ve heard without the sample work just as well but that’s just my ears.

Agree. It annoys me when people dismissively act like the sample made the song when she wrote a completely different vocal melody over it, and the sample has nothing to do w/the hooks. Compare it to other sample-featuring hits like Mariah’s Fantasy where she actually sings part of the original song (the bad boy remix is practically a cover). The Bill Hamel remix is prob my fave and it doesn’t use it at all.

Shortly before HU came out a snippet leaked that was basically the last minute, fading in at “I don’t know what to do” right before the final chorus, and I could swear it didn’t have the main woodwind part of the sample. I was actually surprised when I heard the final one and thought that bit was annoying at first lol. It was a perfectly catchy banger w/out it. 🤷‍♂️

I could be mistaken, and if so I’m sure someone here will correct me, but I believe they created a version of HU that did not feature the sample in case ABBA didn’t give them the rights to use it. Apparently ABBA aren’t typically very forthcoming with permission to use samples. I remember it being a big deal that they gave permission to Madonna for HU.

You are correct, and thank God Abba gave permission. The song just isn't the same without the sample. The Motorola AD didn't include the sample...

Same. Could be because it wasn’t one of their more well known hits here in the US. I think it was more well known internationally.

That and my age.

It wasn’t a hit at all here in America and I wasn’t born when the song was out.

Fortunatly, the song is great even without the sample.

As a fellow Aussie I’m surprised you were able to escape Abbamania! I was only seven when Abba Gold was released in 1992 but I had the cassette, the VHS and later the CD 😆

Back in that day, I was more into Alice Cooper lol - It wasn't until I heard Erotica, that then got me into Madonna, before that, I really didn't dig her at all lol

I see we had opposite trajectories - I came out the womb a flamboyant pop diva obsessed gayby and discovered metal and rock music much later in life!
